Chapter 230 - "In the Kitchen"

“Alright, let’s get the preparations ready.”

Upon arriving in the kitchen, I mutter this. Though I say preparations, all I have to do is take out the sweets I made in advance that are stored away, but since there were more tea party attendees than planned, I have to check how many sweets are in storage, just to be sure.

I made around 30 servings of each sweet as a precaution, but the popular ones might run out quickly, so I have to be careful. And I can’t underestimate the stomach capacity of women when it comes to sweets…

Soon after I enter the kitchen, a certain individual appears. Nagartinya. I had permitted her to participate in the tea party as a guest, but in hindsight, that may have been a hasty decision – I’m starting to feel uneasy.

“Rolando-kyun, whatcha doin’?”

“I’m checking how many sweets I have prepared for today’s tea party.”

“Huh? The tea party is today!? …But my dress isn’t done yet, is it?”

Well of course, since it’s only been a few days since I told her to make a dress. Even though I said any ready-made dress in her size would be fine, she insisted “Couture one-of-a-kind dresses are a must” and ordered a custom dress from a skilled artisan.

So of course such a special dress wouldn’t be finished in just a few days. The artisan was still working on the dress.

“That’s too bad. Even though it was a nice tea party.”

“I can’t let it end like this! Zoom!!”

“…Is this DQ?” (+) [1]

After hearing my words, Nagartinya disappears from the spot while chanting the teleportation spell used in a certain nationally beloved RPG, which allows instant transportation to any location that’s been visited before. The ability she’s using is exactly the same as the teleportation I use frequently, but it’s just a pose to help her recognize it more intuitively.

“Haah, hah, I’m back.”

“Ah, welcome back… Wait, it’s done already? Did you mess with the timeline?”

Nagartinya returns to the kitchen in less than a few seconds after disappearing. Her appearance is dressed in an extravagant gown like Princess Tiara and the others, and it suits her very well.

She has a history of living for a long time behind a barrier she erected deep within the Orargrand dungeon. As a result, she can alter the timeline, making the flow of time differ inside and outside the barrier. She probably used that this time as well – I conclude.

“It took ten whole days after all.”

“Well, that’s normal for a dress of that level. It could easily take a month if done poorly.”

“I feel like the artisan said the same thing. So, how is it? My dress appearance? Captivated? If you want, you can embrace me.”

As she thrusts her hands out toward me saying such things, Ruzzo, who was in the pantry, shows himself at just the right timing. Seeing a girlish-looking Nagartinya’s hands getting slapped away by a boyish-looking me must have been an unusual sight, as Ruzzo looked perplexed.

“U-umm, Rolando-sama, who is this?”

“Ahh, she’s my companion. One of the tea party guests.”

“Y-y-y-your w-w-woman!?” (+) [2]

“I-I see. Will your companion be alright?”

Since I normally treat her with scorn, he probably reacted to the word “companion”. In that case, I should mess with her a bit.

“This here is Narty. Nalry, this is Ruzzo, the chef in charge of cooking here.”

“P-pleased to meet you, Narty-sama. I’m Ruzzo, the chef of this estate. I hope we get along from now on.”

From a human perspective, Nagartinya is known as a hero who saved the people from the demon invasion, while from the demon perspective, she is known as a disaster who interfered with the invasion and dealt great damage to the demons.

That’s why no matter what, she can’t let others know she is Nagartinya. Though knowing this idiot, she probably wouldn’t care if her identity was exposed.

For that reason, I decided to give her a fake name to use while staying at this estate. Since she wouldn’t react if called something completely unrelated to her real name, I took Na and Rty from Nagartinya to call her Narty.

She seems to have noticed my intentions, adeptly reacting to the name Ruzzo called her.

“O-oh, n-nice to meet you.”

“By the way Ruzzo, don’t you think Narty’s dress suits her very well?

“Hah!?”

While it was just an ordinary question for Ruzzo, it likely held different implications for her. Asking Ruzzo about that is equivalent to me outright stating “the dress suits her”, albeit indirectly.

Of course, she realizes this, unusually looking flustered. And then Ruzzo answers my question amidst all that.

“Yes, it looks lovely on her.”

“Exactly, that’s what they call a sheltered young lady.”

“R-R-Rolando-kyun, you finally noticed my charm! I’m so happ― cough”

“Don’t get carried away… It’s just idle talk.”

“So, how may I assist you?”

Right as she was getting carried away, I slipped into her bosom and gave her a swift elbow to the solar plexus. Making it seem she’s gasping for the benefit of Ruzzo, who doesn’t notice, I whisper the punchline to her, prompting the reaction I expected along with a small sigh.

Seeing her like that, I tell the inquiring Ruzzo it’s nothing, then move next to her ear and tell her the truth softly.

“…But that dress really does suit you. You look very beautiful.”

“Ooh… y-you got me… off guard…”

Letting out a strangely husky voice, Nagartinya assumes an ORZ pose. It seems her brain can’t process this development.

After that, I have a passing servant take the still mentally incapacitated Nagartinya to the tea party venue, finally restoring peace to the kitchen.

“Sh-she certainly is an eccentric one…”

“You could just say she’s completely insane.”

“Th-that’s…”

While Ruzzo is carefully choosing his words so as not to be rude since she’s my guest, his eyes tell a different story. That all the people I know are nuts…

Amidst the quiet kitchen, as I resume preparations for the tea party, I realize there’s something I forgot to make – those sweets that are a tea party staple.

“Come to think of it, I didn’t make any cookies.”

“Now that you mention it, you’re right.”

“Alright, let’s make them now.”

“B-but, isn’t it already too late―”

“Time Magic! Okay, let’s get started.”

“…I see.”

Paying no heed to time, I immediately start making the cookies. But at this rate, it will take around 30 minutes, making the guests wait.

I activate a barrier enveloping the entire kitchen, using the incantation of a time manipulation monster from a certain famous card game anime. Inside and outside this barrier, the timeline differs – one second outside is one hour inside.

While that’s all well and good, because of how ridiculously I phrased it, Ruzzo is looking at me strangely like I’m questionable. You got a problem with me, punk?

Ignoring Ruzzo, I begin making the tea party staple – cookies. I use wheat flour, sugar, and butter.

“There’s no butter, so I’ll magically make some from milk. Abra cadabra, hocus pocus~”

And like that, I instantly produce butter from milk, obtaining all the cookie ingredients. Despite craving butter so much before, this is awfully anticlimactic.

In this world, the mainstream sugar is jaggery, while what we call regular white sugar is referred to as sucrose. Though both come from sugarcane, the manufacturing process differs, with jaggery grains being larger.

While jaggery is mainstream, small amounts of white sugar also circulate among the upper classes, so it’s not completely unavailable. For these cookies, I’ll use the white sugar.

For the process, I combine 100g flour, 40g butter, and 25g sugar, using a bit of magic to chill the mixture. Chilling helps the cookies hold their shape better when baked for a nicer look.

Next, I use magic to shape them into bite-sized rounds, sprinkle a bit of crushed jaggery on top before baking, then bake them with magic at just the right doneness.

“And they’re done.”

“No ordinary chef could make these.”

“I’ll teach you the recipe later, so you can make them too if you remember it.”

“Really!? Please do!”

While internally smirking at Ruzzo’s reaction after tasting the finished cookies, the completion of the cookies meant preparations were ready for the tea party.
