Chapter 129: After all this time, why did you suddenly change the way you called her?

Free from Kaede’s mackerel-folding attack, Yui was relieved that her own body didn’t snap in half as she took refuge on my back.

“The only safe zone now is the back of Yoshizumi-senpai.”

“Uuh… Yui-chan. Please stay away from Yuya-kun. I’m the only one who can stay on Yuya-kun’s back!”

“Yo, Yoshizumi-senpai… I can see Hannya on Kaede’s back or is it my imagination? I am not  imagining things, am I?”

[TN: Hannya is a female demon in Japanese Folklore.]

Yui, I can see it too, so it’s not your imagination. I mean, Kaede was smiling, but the aura she was exuding seemed scary! I never knew a smiling face could be so scary!?

“Kaede, please calm down a little. It seems Yoshizumi and Yui are scared of you.” Nikaido said with a wry smile, and Kaede’s shoulders twitched.

“Isn’t it obvious to everyone that Yoshizumi’s heart only beats for Kaede. I think you should show her how much room you have for a proper wife in your heart, don’t you?”

“Eh, my real wife… I’m Yuya’s… wife?”

“Yes, yes. Yoshizumi’s wife is Kaede. So don’t get upset over trivial things, eh?”

This was exactly what a wave attack looked like. Yui and I couldn’t help but let out an exclamation of admiration. That was how sophisticated Nikaido’s prince smile was while persuading Kaede. Well, that content was more embarrassing for me though.

“That’s right. How could I have forgotten something so important. I’m sorry, Yuya-kun, Yui-chan.”

 “No, Please don’t…..”

“I don’t think Kaede has anything to apologize…… ?”

“There is! I forgot myself when I saw Yuya-kun’s eyes on her. Yui-chan is like a little sister to me. It was funny to see such a little sister getting along with Yuya-kun, who may become her brother-in-law in the future.”

You were putting on a face that made you look like some kind of holy mother, Kaede, but you seem to be getting clunky. Also come to think of it, it was funny that I might be Yui’s brother-in-law.

And Nikaido. Even though you turned your back, I can tell you’re trying to hold in your laughter!?  Because your shoulders seem to be shaking!

“Aah, Yuya-kun. I’m going home to our love nest. For dinner tonight, I’ll make something you like, Yuya-kun!”

“Hey, Kaede! Don’t lean on me while walking! It’s dangerous!”

“No, no, no. She won’t listen to me!”

It was not very nice as Kaede not only hugged me with her arms, but also started walking closely to me. Spring arrived thus the warmer weather allowed me to feel more texture and softness even when I was wearing clothes.

“That Yoshizumi guy, he’s so easy to get attached to. Even I…”

“Oh, um… Nikaido-senpai? What’s going on? You see that tiger in the background?”

“Size is important, but the most important thing is shape, shape, shape. That’s what the Yoshizumi guy doesn’t understand. You think so too, don’t you?”

“Oh, yes. No, no comment, please.”

Behind me, Nikaido and Yui seem to be having a strange conversation. Yui is saying “Please help me” with her mouth full, but I’m sorry. I couldn’t afford to do that right now. Because….

“Ehehe. I’m Yuya’s wife… his regular wife. New wife… Geez.”

I had to be careful that Kaede, whose consciousness was already more than halfway into her delusional world, didn’t run into a telephone pole.

*****

That night.

“Eh, Kaede. There’s one thing I need you to tell me… if you don’t mind?”

“Of course it’s fine, but what’s with the change?”

I asked as I wiped Kaede’s wet hair with a bath towel as she sat on the bed. There was something I was really curious about.

Incidentally, Kaede’s delusional mode had subsided by the time we got on the train. And  Yuu-chan, who took the train in the opposite direction from us, sent us a great amount of lamenting messages. She said that Nikaido and she had to follow the same way home and she had to listen to her complain endlessly until they parted. Nikaido complained too, didn’t she?

That was not what I wanted to hear. What I wanted to ask was….

“Why did you suddenly start calling Nikaido “Ai-chan”? Nikaido calls you “Kaede” too. I was  wondering if something was wrong.”

I was wondering what made them change the way they called each other. I thought the timing of the name switch was after gym class, so I thought the basketball game probably had an effect.

“It’s just as you expected, Yuya-kun. I’ve been thinking that it seemed strange for you to call Ai-chan Nikaido when you call her Akiho-chan. I’ve always thought it was strange that he called her Nikaido while she called him Akiho-chan.”

So that was how it went. There had been a subtle sense of distance between us, but now that we were calling each other by name, it seemed to have dissipated at once.

“… I’m very happy to be next to you, Yuya-kun.”

As she said this, Kaede took my arm and squeezed it tightly. It was as if she was begging me not to go anywhere, but also whining at the same time.

“What? What’s wrong with your hair?”

“… I just wanted to say something. But Yuya-kun! Now hug me from behind and blubber my hair with a hair dryer!”

I can’t dry your hair while hugging you, Kaede. I’ll hug you from behind after I’m done drying your hair, and don’t worry I’ll take my time hugging you.
