Episode 20: Nothing special about everyday life

“Shi-o-ri-no… bakaaaaaaaaa!!”

(T/N: Stupid Shiori! [evil laugh])

Zudaaaaaaan!

A roaring sound echoes through the gym. It was a déjà vu of the situation from the other day.

But this time it wasn’t a drill, it was just a game, the usual after work basketball.

The sound you just heard was me dunking with gusto.

“Huff! Iori, something happened to you again today, right? You’re in a good mood and full of energy!!”

“Shut up, Ethan! Let’s get back on defense!”

As usual, we were enjoying the basketball game in a loud and boisterous manner.

The conversation was in English, of course.

“Ah, it’s your sister again? That’s tough.”

Liam, a member of the same team, said as he handed me the ball he had stolen.

“It’s a physical game of words.”

I’ll be patient until I graduate from high school, but I have a few things I need to take care of before then. I can’t just run away from them.

“I’ll help you, just let me know if there’s something I can do..”

After an hour of sweating and having fun, we decided to call it a day.

“Hey Cheena, let’s go home.”

I called Cheena, who was practicing in the corner of the gym.

“Oh, we’re leaving already? Okay.”

She thanked the female soldier who had been practicing with her and ran over to us.

The nape of her sweaty neck peeking out from her hair, which was pulled up in a ponytail, looked so shiny it was almost unbearable.

“Are you okay? Is it a little hot here?”

For the time being, I averted my eyes and handed her a sports drink.

“Don’t worry. I’m not practicing that hard. But Yori is amazing. You’re not that tall, but you scored a lot of points with dunks and stuff.”

“I’m taller than average! Don’t compare me to Americans or Russians.”

We wiped off our sweat and went to the shower room.

By the way, if you’re wondering why Cheena is participating in basketball today, it’s because she’s practicing for the class match.

She said she didn’t want to drag me down, so she wanted to practice beside me while I was playing, so I “just had to” bring her.

Emma, a female soldier, was also there today, so I asked her to accompany Cheena.

I can’t let her get mixed up with those musclebrains.

(T/N: muscle brain = people who were active in the field of sports/highly skilled in sports. It can also mean large, strong, but inept, bumbling, buffoonish or unintelligent man as a derogatory term/slang. [Source: Wiktionary].

Let’s just say, Iori is protective of Cheena hehe)

(E/N: Let’s just say musclebrain’s are idiots who use their fists to talk, as Elfman said “Fight me like a man”.)

Incidentally, she asked me to help the other interpreters while I was working. I had to work as an interpreter today, but they also needed someone to help with some simple paperwork.

I was a little happy to get paid for my part-time work.

But when she said she needed help, she only asked because Cheena happened to be there, and I could have asked her to stay home until the basketball game started, but there was a little reason why I took her out as soon as I got home today.

“Thanks for waiting.”

“Oh, well, let’s go home.”

After taking a shower and changing into casual clothes, I met up with Cheena and rode my bike to my apartment.

It was just before 8:00 pm, the sun had gone down and it was completely dark.

“I’ll go to Yori’s room after dropping off my luggage.”

We exchanged a cheek kiss that I already gotten used to, and said to Cheena who was going into her room,

I stopped her and said…

“No, I’ll go (to yours) today.”

“Yori? Why?”

“You’ll see.”

??… With a question mark, Cheena opened the door and went inside her room.

Right after that,

“Cheenaaa! Long time no see!”

“Really!”

Staff Sergeant Angelina Lake’s sweet voice and Cheena’s cry of surprise echoed down the hallway.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Oh God. If you knew Angie was coming back, you should have told me.”
“I was told not to tell you.”
“I wanted to surprise Cheena. I’m sorry.”
Cheena was a little puffed up and we soothed her.
(T/N: puffed = swollen eyes due to crying)
I went to Cheena’s room just after we had split up and saw Angelina there for the first time in weeks.
I had received a message from her that she would be back in the evening and that I should take her out, and it sounded like fun, so I did it.
However, Cheena was more surprised than expected, and Angie was currently soothing her bad mood.
She’s still cute even when she’s puffed up like that.
“Hey sorry Cheena. You see, I bought you a lot of souvenirs.”
“…Show me.”
Oh, good, Angie, she’s biting. You’re on a business trip to England this time, aren’t you? Push it!
“Here’s some Marmite, frozen haggis, and this is eel jelly from…”
(T/N: Marmite is a food spread extracted from yeast; frozen haggis is a type of pudding composed of the liver, heart, and lungs of a sheep (or other animal), minced and mixed with beef or mutton suet and oatmeal and seasoned with onion, cayenne pepper, and other spices. The mixture is packed into a sheep’s stomach and boiled. [Source: Wikipedia]; and eel jelly consists of chopped eels boiled in a spiced stock that is allowed to cool and set, forming a jelly. It is eaten cold. [Source: Wikipedia]
Bon Appét*t!)
“Those foods are known to be s**t!”
“There’s also this Stargazy Pie.”
(T/N: Stargazy pie is a Cornish dish made of baked pilchards, along with eggs and potatoes, covered with a pastry crust. It’s unique feature is its protruding crust that seems like gazing up in the sky, hence it’s name. [Source: Wikipedia]
“I can tell at a glance that you’re uncommonly crazy!”
If you want, you can do an image search. You can see the stars.
I mean, there’s a lot of good food in England, so go get some of that.
Haggis is the kind of food that made the president of a certain country say, ‘I don’t trust anyone who eats this.’
“… Hey, Angie, you’re kidding right? It’s just a story, right?”
“No, no, no… I just thought it would be better to leave a lasting impression.”
Angie breaks out in a cold sweat as Cheena looks unusually angry.
It’s the first time I’ve ever seen such an angry look in Cheena’s eyes.
However, Cheena didn’t seem to be seriously accusing her, and she still seemed to have other souvenirs stashed at Angie’s feet, so it should be okay.
“By the way Angie, how long will you stay in Japan this time?”
I was afraid that showing her more ghetto stuff would make her feel worse, so I offered her another topic.
“It’ll be a little over two weeks. The class match is in two weeks, right? I’ll be there to cheer you on, so I’m looking forward to it!”
“You’re coming? It’s not like it’s a field day.”
It’s true that even outsiders are allowed to cheer for the class matches at our school, and I’ve heard that a few people come to watch them every year.
But they usually don’t come.
In Japan, parents were allowed to cheer for their children.
“Is it normal for parents to cheer for their children in Japan?”
“Up to junior high school, yes. I’m tired of the hectic conversation when Angie is around.”
As I muttered to myself with some annoyance, Cheena looked at her watch and said.
“Oh, by the way, we haven’t eaten dinner yet. I’m hungry from all the exercise.”
Surely, it’s time to go. Let’s have a quick dinner.
“What should we eat?”
“What about… instant noodles?”
“Cheena, we’re going to a diner.”
