Chapter 2: Ever-changing Daily Lives

Episode 35: Aaah!

The next day.

After the morning meeting, typical of a nature house, I finished breakfast and some light cleaning. During that time, I was thinking about Cheena’s behavior yesterday, but it was seriously like a Zen question, so I stopped.

(T/N: A zen question – a question to contemplate with)

She herself was as usual, so I guess it was really a prank.

Then it was nine o’clock.

The entire school year gathered once, then split into two groups for each preferred activity and started to travel by bus.

On one side was the mountain stream rafting group, and on the other side was the skydiving group.

There were about 90 people for the mountain stream rafting and 60 people for the skydiving.

To be honest, I was surprised to see so many people participating in skydiving. I mean how can they participate in such a terrifying activity!

I thought that most people would avoid such risky activity.

But that question was soon answered.

Ah, I see, Shiori is here too.

Yes, Shiori had also chosen to go skydiving. I saw her back as we boarded the bus.

Then, inevitably, her guards and some members of her fanclubs were also here, wanting to show Shiori a good time.

Welp, I just hope she’s not scared of heights.

During the bus ride, as I was looking out the window and thinking about this, Hosoi, who was sitting next to me, started to doze off on my shoulder. It’s disgusting to be honest or maybe just a bit unnerving, I immediately woke him up with a military elbow.

After a 20-minute bus ride, we arrived at our destination, a little further from the foot of the mountain.

It was the biggest skydiving club in the area.

I could see a large grassy area with several runways running through it.

My brain trembles. I was looking forward to it.

I had already submitted my paperwork in advance, so I bypassed the registration desk and gathered on the grass. There were already about 30 instructors waiting for us.

The only way for someone without a license to skydive is to fly in tandem with an instructor, so I guess that’s the number of people needed.

There were also many foreign instructors. It’s hard to get a license if you’re Japanese, so I guess they hired them from overseas.

After lining up and sitting on the grass, Tachibana-sensei had a short talk with the instructor.

After a short conversation with the instructor, Tachibana-sensei said, “Now then, the instructor will give you a briefing, so please listen carefully.”

The instructor then took over.

In response, someone who looked like a leader stepped forward with a smile and began to speak in a clear voice.

“Welcome to Horikita High School! I’m your instructor.”

The instructor first introduced himself and gave an overview of the facility and other unrelated information.

The students listened with a variety of attitudes, some expectant, some anxious, and some emboldened.

“Well then let’s start with the basics on skydiving. If you’ve ever done skydiving, please raise your hand!”

It was a common ice-breaker to ease the tension.

And I guess almost no one had done this before. In Japan, it’s a high-class activity that costs more than 30,000 yen (approximately $273 USD) per jump.

(T/N: Skydiving in Japan is between ¥32,000 to ¥48,000. Basic tandem skydiving is ¥32,000 (~$291); tandem jump with a hand camera is ¥42,000 (~$383); and tandem jump with a cameraman is ¥48,000(~$437). [Source: japantravel.com])

Sure enough, only three people raised their hands. They were all familiar faces: Sasaki, Shiori, and me.

“Wow, that’s amazing. Shiori has skydived before!”

“You can do anything, Shiori!”

“You’re so cool!”

The enthusiastic followers were quick to praise her.

Sasaki and I were completely ignored. It’s okay, though.

The instructor saw this and said.

“It’s great that there are three of you. Oh, by the way, I heard that there is a person who has a license and will be flying alone instead of tandem.”

He said, looking at his notes.

The students were buzzing.

A high school jumper with a license. Hearing that there was such a rare person, everyone began to look around curiously.

Of course, when the Shiori believers heard this, they immediately tried to lift her up without question.

“I’m so impressed that Shiori has a license.”

“Who’s that Shiori?”

While most of the people were focused on Shiori, their voices were all cut off.

She slowly lowered her hand, looking very frustrated.

“Jeez, if it’s not Shiori-chan, then who is it…?”

The students buzzed and rushed to find the person. There were three candidates. One of them was gone. Of course, one more person puts his hand down.

And the one person who didn’t put his hand down immediately attracted a lot of attention.

Well, it’s me.

Hey, Cheena, don’t support my arm from underneath. I’m not putting it down.

Yes, I have a license to fly by myself because I am trained in airborne descent (skydiving below) as part of my military training.

(T/N: Airborne descent in military refers to troops who were specially trained to effect, following transport by air, an assault debarkation, either by parachuting or touchdown. [Source: militaryfactory.com])

The military has the ability to issue licenses to some extent, and skydiving licenses are common to all member countries.

Huh? I thought you were looking forward to it because it’s not an attraction you can experience often.

Well, I can only participate in training one or two days a month due to my schedule. I really wish I could fly every day.

Incidentally, I fly almost 10 times a day on days when my schedule allows.

That’s how much I love skydiving.

As soon as the students found out that I was that person, they started to get even more excited.

I also received a hateful look from Shiori.

That signal is good.

At this point, Tachibana-sensei opened her mouth and added soothingly.

“Please be quiet! We’re going to have you fly twice now, and Kagami-kun is going to fly both times and take video of you from the sky.”

That’s right, this time I’m going to be in charge of filming.

I didn’t really want to do it, but I accepted on the condition that I would be allowed to fly twice.

Normally the instructors would have done this, but there were so many participants this time that they didn’t have time.

A little later, when the noise had died down, the instructor resumed his explanation. After that, a lecture on posture began.

While the instructors were teaching the students, I got a small sports camera from the instructor and put on the jumpsuit I had brought.

There was no problem if we wore jerseys like everyone else, but just in case we were going to have a lot of fun.

After all that, the first half of the group finally boarded two propeller planes and took off into the sky.

By this time, Shiori’s fanatic- ahem I mean follower’s were getting back into the swing of things and whispering about me in the cramped cabin.

“It’s not fair that he flies twice just because he’s a photographer.”

“You Kagami, I won’t forgive you if you make Shiori’s face out of focus.”

Of course it’s impossible to take a picture of an individual’s face.

The experience dive starts at 200 meters and more, and the flying tone is only a few minutes. I’m only going to take a few shots of the whole thing, and take videos.

But Shiori’s funny face is possible, I’ll try it sometime.

We reached our goal of 4000m in about 10 minutes. There was no cloud cover, and the weather was fine, with a spectacular view stretching to the horizon.

“It’s so cool!”

“You’re freaking out, aren’t you?”

“No way! I’m so excited!”

There were shouts of joy from inside the plane. However, half of them sounded like they were just being strong.

Most of the girls looked quite pale.

Miyamoto, who was sitting behind me, was especially upset, her mouth agape.

“It’s too high, isn’t it? If I fly, I’ll slip out of the harness and ahhhhh!”

“Calm down, Miyamoto. It’s true that I was just under the height limit, but I’m fine. I’m still beautiful.”

“I’m sorry! I’m sorry for thinking that you want to look down from on high, or that you’re not tall enough!”

Are you sure you’re ready for the real thing now?

Flying is not the scary thing in skydiving. The real deal is…

“The hatch is open!”

One of the instructors said, and the big door on the side opened.

This is the most scary moment for beginners. The most frightening moment for a beginner is when the cabin is connected to the outside and the wind is blowing into the cabin.

Goooooooooooooooooooo!

“Kyaaaaaaaaah!”

“Noooooo, I can’t do it!”

“I can see angels…”

I Knew it…
