Book 3, Chapter 24 (Part 5)

It’s already daybreak by the time Duan Ling opens his eyes again. So many things happened the day before that it has left him quite exhausted. When he wakes up this time, Wu Du is sleeping at his side, making him feel very much at ease.

Duan Ling turns to his side, cozily leaning against Wu Du, and rubs his head on his chest to find him not all that sweet-smelling … He smells a bit like sweat. They didn’t bother bathing before going to sleep last night.

What time is it? He doesn’t have to study today! Duan Ling’s mood brightens all of a sudden. Outside, the peach trees are still in bloom, a generous spray of petals is fluttering all over the place, riding the spring breeze. Many thoughts are taking up space in his head, but everything else has been pushed aside by the thought of not having to study — the most important thought.

He wonders when Zheng Yan had even left. Duan Ling stands in the door, staring outside for a little while before he turns around to look for the yellowing exam papers in the sword case. Good thing they’re still there.

One particular test is going to be particularly difficult to pass today — there’s no way Mu Kuangda won’t ask him about anything. He should come up with how he should respond ahead of time.

First of all, Mu Kuangda is going to ask about the kidnapping last night. That one’s easy to muddle through.

Secondly, Chang Liujun will surely bring up those “secret letters”. They definitely can’t just hand them over, otherwise both Cai Yan and himself will be exposed.

Lastly, should he verify with Mu Kuangda whether the crown prince is an imposter? Will Mu Kuangda start tackling Cai Yan? The situation has begun to move in a direction that is advantageous to him — Zheng Yan’s heard, Chang Liujun’s heard, and Lang Junxia has also heard. He may not have to do anything at all; Yao Fu, Mu Kuangda, Cai Yan, even Li Yanqiu may do something.

“What are your plans?” Wu Du wakes, and as he sits up his head is still hurting a little. He stays on the bed for a bit, pushing at his own forehead, clearly having drunk more last night in the end.

Duan Ling unrolls the papers and puts them on the table, thinking about how Cai Yan will explain this. From what he knows of Cai Yan, he’s someone who keeps a lot buried in his chest, but he’s also exceptionally uncompromising. Seeing Duan Ling so suddenly had left him in a temporary state of distress, and then he was kidnapped; that’s the only reason why he didn’t react in any way last night. Now that he’s had time to think about things carefully, he’ll surely find some way to cover up this lie.

“This was the entry exam for Biyong College. It was being kept in Shangjing, so it’s highly possible that the Mongolians took it back with them during the invasion. I can’t believe Batu’s kept it.”

Duan Ling and Cai Yan’s handwriting are entirely different. As a child, Cai Yan was taught how to write by his brother, so his characters are both neat and have the strength of a warrior to them. Duan Ling’s is the polar opposite. After learning to write by imitating Lady Wei’s copybooks, he possesses a refined calligraphic style.

“Cai Yan’s handwriting looks like it was taught by someone who held a sword — the strength of the brush goes right through the paper. It was one of the reasons the fourth prince believed him back then.”

Duan Ling laughs at himself. “It feels like nothing about me resembles dad.”

“Your manner of speaking is a bit like him.” Wu Du thinks about this some more and adds, “No, actually you sound a little like His Majesty. You make everything sound like it’s not all that important.”

“Say, if we present this evidence to my uncle, will he believe it?”

The papers are stamped with their personal seals, and if Cai Yan had mentioned to Li Yanqiu that his name in Shangjing was “Duan Ling”, then all they have to do is show Li Yanqiu the exam papers with the “Duan Ling” seal. The handwriting on it is entirely different from Cai Yan’s, and the truth will out.

But if Cai Yan never mentioned it before, then one can still come up with a conclusion if one compares this paper with the current crown prince’s handwriting: the crown prince once used the name “Cai Yan”. Then what can Cai Yan do to make that work? From Shangjing to Xichuan, every detail of his life, no matter how small, must have been investigated by Li Yanqiu. There’s no way Mu Kuangda would have allowed any opportunity to slip him by, and that’s even more true for Xie You.

Wu Du is still sitting on the bed, staring blankly at Duan Ling.

“Has he ever mentioned what name he used when he lived in Shangjing?” Duan Ling asks.

“I don’t know. I’d been sent to the Celestial Prison then, and when they took me out to interrogate me all they asked was one thing, ‘is this the same person you were looking for in Shangjing.’”

That day, Wu Du had been escorted into the palace dressed in prisoner garb, and that was the only question Li Yanqiu ever asked him. All of the details matched then, and thus Southern Chen’s “crown prince” thereafter regained his identity.

The first thing he’ll have to figure out then, is whether Cai Yan can make this lie work.

“My Lords,” the steward says outside deferentially, “Chancellor Mu would like to see you both.”

Finally. Duan Ling just knew that Mu Kuangda would question them about the events of last night.

As soon as Mu Kuangda woke up at first dawn, he drank three rounds of tea as is his habit. Chang LIujun had sat kneeling nearby, and he waited until early morning before he started reporting what happened in the previous evening. By the time Mu Kuangda finished listening to the beginning of the story, his expression had already turned grim. He says to Chang Liujun, “Tell me the rest in a little bit,” and orders a servant to bring Chang Pin, Wu Du, and Duan Ling.

Chang Pin is the first to arrive, not yet aware of what the summons is about, and only once Duan Ling and Wu Du have come in and said their good mornings does Mu Kuangda order that breakfast be served. He says to Chang Liujun, “You may speak now.”

And so Chang Liujun retells what happened the night before in full detail. As he gets to the part about the Mongolian envoy committing a kidnapping, it seems clear that Mu Kuangda is already aware of this fact; after all, too many things have happened at the posthouse inn last night for the Jiangzhou army to ignore. Once Chang Liujun is halfway done and he pauses, Chang Pin says to Mu Kuangda, “I’ve already taken care of things with Xie You and his men. It’s just that you went to bed early last night, Lord Chancellor, and that’s why I haven’t had the chance to report it to you.”

“Right,” Mu Kuangda nods, and asks Duan Ling, “Is that what happened? Did Chang Liujun leave out anything?”

“He did not.”

Chang Liujun’s account is both clear and coherent. Then he keeps going; as he mentions Lang Junxia opening the compartment in the scabbard, his eyes turn to Duan Ling and Wu Du.

“They were two secret missives given to Amga and Khatanbaatar by Borjigin Batu.” Duan Ling knew that he’d be asked this question, so he’s prepared. “I’ve already handed them over to Zheng Yan.”

“That’s not what you said you’d do last night,” Chang Liujun says. “Didn’t you say we’ll hand them to Chancellor Mu first?”

Duan Ling nods, and he turns to Mu Kuangda. “Last night it suddenly occurred to me that instead of Chancellor Mu presenting them to the emperor, Zheng Yan is a more appropriate person to do so. That’s why I struck the iron while it was hot and handed them to Zheng Yan as soon as I got them.”

Chang Pin’s eyes are filled with misgivings. “What for?”

Duan Ling chooses to keep them hanging — he knows Mu Kuangda isn’t going to suspect him at this time, and continues, “Let’s hear Chang Liujun finish his account first.”

And so Chang Liujun continues, and when he gets to the part where the Mongolian took the crown prince hostage, both Mu Kuangda and Chang Pin are both shocked.

“Wang Shan, you really aren’t afraid of dying, are you,” Chang Pin says incredulously. “How could you taunt the crown prince this way?”

Smart man, Duan Ling thinks. Chang Pin has managed to figure out his intentions from a secondhand narration.

But Mu Kuangda doesn’t show any indication of his attitude towards what Duan Ling did, and takes another sip of his tea. “Chang Liujun, continue.”

Chang Liujun gets to the end where the crown prince fell into the water, and even Mu Kuangda seems to look uncomfortable at the thought. Yet when he hears about what Amga yelled out, both Mu Kuangda and Chang Pin give a slight start.

For a long time nobody says anything. They all sit in dead silence.

But after a while, Mu Kuangda unexpectedly breaks into a smile. “Is that so? Heh, I knew he was an imposter.”

It’s Duan Ling’s turn to look taken aback. He’d been thinking that Mu Kuangda would spend some time being stunned, but he never imagined that the chancellor of an empire would accept this fact without any surprise at all.

Chang Pin says to Mu Kuangda, “Borjigin Batu must have gone to school with Li Jianhong’s son, and he sent an ambassador to check whether the crown prince is the genuine article. Then as soon as he realised that something wasn’t quite right, he sent another envoy nominally to celebrate the crown prince’s birthday, while in reality it was to verify his suspicions.”

“Correct.” Mu Kuangda asks Duan Ling, “Is that what was mentioned in the letter?”

“Yes … yes it was.” Duan Ling comes back to himself, meeting Wu Du’s eyes.

Wu Du seems rather surprised as well, and he nods. “That is the case. Chang Liujun was with us at the time, and I made the decision to pass them on thinking that the less people know about this the better.”

On the way there Wu Du and Duan Ling had already talked this out amongst themselves; Duan Ling finishes Wu Du’s sentence, “I was thinking about presenting them to you, Chancellor, and let you decide what to do with them. But then since Amga already yelled out what he did before he left, and everyone at the scene heard what he said quite clearly, I decided to hand both of the letters to Zheng Yan. Once he returned to the palace last night, Zheng Yan would surely report this to His Majesty, and some material evidence would at least be kept. Otherwise, since Wuluohou Mu already knew that we have this evidence on our hands, we’ll only be giving ourselves unnecessary trouble — we really will never get a day of peace.”

Mu Kuangda falls into an extended stretch of silence as he meditates on everything. After a long pause, he gives Chang Pin a glance. Chang Pin nods slowly back at him without a word.

In that split second, a moment of realisation hits Duan Ling squarely in the head and he understands the message they’re passing! He can’t help but think, that was close — if he’d done otherwise, the situation would have gone even more out of his control.

Mu Kuangda and Chang Pin must have conspired to overthrow Cai Yan. If that’s the case, everything Wu Du mentioned matches the facts perfectly! What Mu Kuangda wants is not to control Li Yanqiu, but to take over Southern Chen! If he’d allowed these two exam papers to fall into Mu Kuangda’s hands, it would have been as good as signing Cai Yan’s death warrant.

As for him, “Wang Shan” has no evidence at all except for the two exam papers; can he return to the imperial court without a hitch?

“This ‘decision’ you made without consulting me,” Mu Kuangda says, his tone chilly, “is a bit too decisive by far, Wang Shan.”

Wu Du doesn’t look at Mu Kuangda. His eyes are staring at Chang Liujun. “It was my decision.”

“Forget it.” Mu Kuangda is still a little bit angry. “Both of you, outside. You too, Chang Liujun.”

The three thus rise and leave. Duan Ling seems anxious, glancing at Wu Du.

But Wu Du waves off his concerns and whispers. “What could he ever do to us? If he pisses me off I’ll poison everyone in his estate — his whole family can get promoted up to the nine heavens.”

Duan Ling laughs. However those words have reminded him of Mu Qing, and he decides to go check on him.

Inside the room, Mu Kuangda’s eyebrows are locked in a deep frown. He puts a cup of tea at the corner of his table. Chang Pin takes it and drinks it.

“Lord Chancellor, now that I’ve thought about it, what Wang Shan took was actually the best course of action,” Chang Pin says.

After thinking about it carefully, Mu Kuangda believes Chang Pin is right.

Mu Kuangda heaves a sigh. “How could I not know it’s the best course of action? If Zheng Yan heard what was yelled at them, took the secret letters to the palace, and reported it to the fourth son of Li, it would be far more credible than having them passed on to me before they’re presented to him. I’m just worried about this kid Wang Shan — how involved his way of thinking is. No one taught him so, and yet he’s managed to work through this so clearly. It’s not at all like something someone his age could have come up with. I’m just worried that he’ll never take to us.”

But Chang Pin is replying to this with a smile. Mu Kuangda is suddenly reminded of something else, and he smiles back, nodding. “He shares some similarities with you.”

“He’ll take to us soon enough,” Chang Pin says.

Mu Kuangda says, “Never mind. My mistake, I suppose. I’m just hoping he’ll place on the exams. Send him back here.”

And so Chang Pin goes outside to get a servant to bring Duan Ling back. Before Duan Ling returns, Mu Kuangda adds, “It seems the heavens are truly on my side. It’s only a matter of time now.”

“Lord Chancellor, you’ve been spending too much time in the palace, and Xie You is already getting suspicious. Make sure you take the utmost care.”

And after he finishes saying this, their conversation comes to an end, and they fall into silence.
