Chapter 19: Foothold (2)

=== === ===

The man placed the obstacles back to its original place after threatening Ye Ke, not once even allowing him to speak.

Ye Ke looked at the piles of obstacles that were gradually placed back to its original place. Although he’d steeled his heart for the possibility of rejection, it nevertheless put him in a downtrodden predicament.

He suddenly thought of a sentence: Human nature at a time where one should help each other was full of malice. Though he changed the sentence slightly, it was nevertheless helped stabilize his current state of mind.

Whether the people were willing to lend an open hand or not, you’ll always be alone. Just look out for yourself. This was for the best.

Turning around and looking at the desolate view from the carved hole, Ye Ke sighed painfully.

He understood them.

The world suddenly turned upside down and they were lucky enough to survive thus far. They saw their friends or acquaintances and even strangers turn right in front of them. It was surely a cause for fright. Accepting outsiders? That was a risk they weren’t willing to take. Moreover, they couldn’t even see his face.

The best thing to ensure their safety was to make sure he goes away. Accepting outsiders would bring nothing but trouble.

Ye Ke couldn’t fault them for that.

Ye Ke held the garbage can, careful not to make a noise and began moving.

He found another supermarket. He tapped on the front entrance for nearly half an hour. No signs of movement.

He moved again and found another a small sized supermarket at the corner of the street.

This time he was more determined.

“Haha…” Ye Ke chuckled grimly in a low voice. “I escaped school, faced many dangers… I don’t believe I won’t find a safe place…”

The sun began to set in the west. He moved to the corner of the wall and sat on the ground with his head placed between his hands.

The feeling of dark despair as black as the deep abyss began to spread in his heart.

The temperature dropped rapidly.

He suddenly remembered a news article he’d read before. There was a kind of bird in this world with no feet. It could fly in the azure all the time. When it was tired, it would rest against the gust of wind. It only had one chance in life. If it fell, death would face the little bird.

Ye Ke’s eyes changed. He rose back to his feet, unwilling to give up.

He was now close to a supermarket opened advertising itself open 24/7.

He wondered, was there anyone else hiding in this place?

The windows were veiled with newspapers and the locks of the door were much worse than other supermarkets he’d been too. It seems after they went inside, the people added another layer of lock for protection. And as usual, a counter or some sort was used to block the front door entrance.

Ye Ke approached the window. As he’d always done, he tapped on the windows a three short interval. He tapped again and again for the small possibility of hope there’d be that one group of people kind enough to help a stranger in this fucked up world. As the supermarket was smaller than all others he’d been to, he’s tapping was easier to hear. After tapping three consecutive times, the newspaper in the window was torn open in the corner.

A handsome well-to-do middle-aged man with a beard appeared. His beard hadn’t been trimmed for some time now and it looked neglected and unkempt.

He saw Ye Ke in the garbage can. His mouth parted, ready to speak but quickly shut it tight. He covered his mouth with the hem of his sleeve, eyes wide open as he quickly covered the windows.

Ye Ke was confused but suddenly thinking of something, he hastily covered his mouth and slowed down his breathing.

He saw the expression on the other party’s face. It was the fear and panic upon seeing a walking corpse. Though he could not see well as most of the windows were blocked by the newspaper, the window reflected a fuzzy figure standing behind with his head tilted and drooping.

W-w-when did the thing come over? Why was he not on his guard?

Ye Ke cried inwardly. Why was he not alerted? When at the university, though he’d not rest for long, Ye Ke was still alert and he’d the time to respond. Now he was like a fawn stared at by a cheetah lurking in green moss—he the prey and the predator the zombie. The walking dead was interested in the green looking think, looking at it interestedly.

The corpse hit the garbage can and he’d almost jumped up anxiously.

Seeing the garbage can remain unmoving, the corpse grew rather annoyed. Groaning, it hit the garbage can once more, its impact this time stronger and fiercer.

Biting his lip, Ye Ke placed both hands on the two sides of the garbage can, attempting to keep the garbage can steady as possible and remain unmoving.

He didn’t want it to fall over.

It felt like someone was pulling him from behind towards the edge of death. It beaconed him so.

Ye Ke bit his lips harder, a drop of blood spilled and every of his body trembled. Despite the cold dropping temperature, sweat dampened his back.

It looks like this is my end, he thought helplessly.

His mind was blank and he could not think clearly. The only thing on his mind was the memories of the past, an awakened memory long forgotten… or at least he’d like to think… his parents living happily and spoiling him tenderly, his brothers going out for a drink, and the beautiful flower he met for the first time that night…

The short moment of fresh fragrant air kindled his memories for a short few minutes followed by a cruel roar returning him back to reality. The ravaging groan and fierce hit gradually weakened then finally stopped.

Gulping, Ye Ke nervously peeked through the carved hole. He saw the corpse stepping around the trash can, then finally left, perhaps losing interest.

Fortunately, there were no other corpses around. If they were attracted to him by the sound, he would really have died.

When the crisis came and left, Ye Ke kept a vigilant posture inside the garbage can for a long while before relaxing his wholesome self.

Five minutes in, the corpse had stumbled far away.

He looked around again and seeing nothing unusual, his hands reached out and tapped a distress signal on the window.
