Chapter 11

The next day classes unfortunately resumed, which meant that I was probably gonna have to listen to Jeremiah rant about ancient handwriting styles for two agonizing hours.

Was it really too much to ask for two days off in a row?

I mean, it’s not like some global catastrophe was going to happen just because some high school students got an extra day off.

Actually, I take that back.

After all, the perfect counterexample to my argument was currently walking right beside me.

“What are you staring at? Is there food stuck in my teeth or something?”

Lucia said, mildly bewildered.

“Nah, I was just thinking about how this world would definitely be in shambles by now if you had just a little more freetime.”

“Does nothing of substance ever come out of your mouth?”

Lucia remarked, while narrowing her crimson eyes a little.

“Substance huh? Since when did you start using words that don’t have just five to six letters in them?”

“Ever since I started spending more time with someone who likes to run their mouth a lot.”

Lucia said before shrugging her arms.

“Look at you benefiting from our meetups. When’s it gonna be my turn to get something out of these interactions?”

I replied, in a sarcastic tone.

In response, she just rolled her eyes.

“Anyway, could you remind me again where exactly we’re going right now? I think I blanked out the first time you told me.”

“We’re going to the library so I can return a book that I forgot to renew a week ago and for the record this is the fifth time that I've told you Otto.”

“Well, maybe if your voice didn’t sound like it came from a broken foghorn, I wouldn't blank out as much when you talk to me.”

“Are you trying to piss me off on purpose?”

“Maybe a little.”

I remarked, in a curt tone.

After walking for a couple more minutes, Lucia and I got intercepted by someone with an optimistic expression on their face and an enchanted sword by their side.

It was Ameil.

The moment I saw Ameil, I immediately felt as if something was off about him.

Perhaps it was because he got into some sort of dark pact with a demon or sacrificed a part of his soul to destroy some kind of monster from the abyss.

Or maybe it was because he now had an armband with the word prez on it…

Ah, so that’s why he hasn’t been around lately.

“Phew, finally found you guys. I almost thought that I was gonna have to search the entire school.”

He said, with a bit of relief in his voice.

“What do you want this time, Ameil?”

Lucia replied, slightly irritated.

“Come on, you don’t always have to act so cold towards your dear old brother Luci.”

“Just get to the point already!”

She remarked, before putting her left hand on her wand.

Which in turn caused me to instinctively reach for her left hand.

“Okay okay, calm down. No need to get violent.”

Ameil said while raising his hands up.

In response, Lucia sighed before letting her hand fall to her side.

“Look, the vice president of the student council and I are going on a field trip today and we won’t be back until tomorrow, so-“

“Let me guess, you need someone to take over your duties?”

Lucia interjected.

“Not all of them, I just need you two to help out with the ones pertaining to the school picnic that’s happening in a few days.”

“And would we be doing this stuff after school or…”

I asked inquisitively while still grasping onto Lucia’s hand.

“Nah, you guys would get excused from your classes for the rest of the day.”

“We’ll do it.”

Lucia and I said in unison, the moment those words came out of his mouth.

“Alright, uh guess that settles it then.”

Ameil remarked, before pulling out two cards with lanyards attached to them and a folded up piece of paper.

“These are provisional student council membership cards, have them on you if you don’t want to get written up for leaving class early. And this is a packet filled with everything you guys need to know in order to carry out your duties.”

“Got it.”

“Understood.”

“Anyhow I need to get going now. Oh and um I think I forgot to put directions to the student council room in the packet, sorry about that.”

Ameil said quickly after handing over the packet and council membership cards to us.

“We aren’t toddlers, Ameil. We can figure it out, well at least one of us can anyway.”

Lucia replied, before looking towards me with an annoyed look on her face.

In response, I just averted her gaze.

“Right, then I’ll be counting on you guys!”

Ameil said in a hopeful tone before parting ways with Lucia and me.

The second Ameil left, we started sifting through the materials he gave us.

The moment Lucia saw what was written in dark ink on top of the card Ameil handed her, a look of revulsion overtook her face.

On the other hand, I had the complete opposite reaction. As unlike Lucia, I got dealt a card that had the words substitute vice president on it.

“Oh come on, why the hell do I have to be the substitute president?”

She remarked, with a hint of irritation in her voice, before gesturing to the card that she was currently holding.

“I don’t know what you’re complaining about, I thought that you liked bossing people around.”

In turn, Lucia just groaned.

“Hey, it could’ve been worse. I mean, it’s not like you got put in charge of a bunch of preschoolers, right?"

I said while shrugging my arms dismissively.

“...I guess you have a point.”

Lucia said begrudgingly before sighing a little.

“And besides, if there's something on your list of duties that you can’t handle, you can just ask me for help.”

“As if you could handle something that I can’t.”

There was a bit of scorn in her voice.

“Really now… what about the time there was a spider on top of one of your novels?”

I remarked, incredulously.

“Oh, save it! You hid behind me the other day just because a dog was barking at you.”

Lucia said indignantly before grabbing my hand and pulling me towards the library, presumably so that she can return her book.
