Before Su Lian can even reply to her baby boy, Han Yuan's cold voice echoes through their ears.
He answers his son quickly because he knows that Su Lian will try to say something misleading.
Su Yichen hears his words and stares up at him in shock.
"My daddy?"
He has a daddy too, just like everyone else? But how come his mommy never answered him? Is this man lying?
Su Yichen looks at his mother hopefully, waiting for confirmation.
At first, Su Lian wanted to deny it but staring at her son's expectant face, she can't bring herself to do it. Patting his little head, she looks at him indulgently. "Yes Xiao Chen, he's your father."
Su Yichen can barely contain his excitement. He runs off the couch and goes to stand in front of Han Yuan.
"Daddy." His big, green eyes are filled with eagerness.
Han Yuan reaches his hand in an attempt to carry the boy, but Su Yichen takes a step back. His face looks aggrieved. "If you're really my daddy, then how come-- how come you're just here now?"
Han Yuan's arms stiffen and he stares at his son's small form. The little boy looks as if he is trying to hold back his tears.
"I'm sorry." Han Yuan's voice is as monotonous as ever, but this time there is a hint of remorse.
He has missed so much of his son's life. Su Yichen will be turning four soon and he as his father is just meeting him. He doesn't even know his birthday, he's just estimating his age from the last time he had been with Su Lian.
That's the most important matter, Su Lian.
She was pregnant and he wasn't there with her. Did she have a normal birth or a caesarean section? Were there complications? Was his son born in a hospital? What was Yichen's first word? When did he take his first steps? Did he cry a lot as a baby?
He missed it, he missed all of it.
"I won't leave again. I'll be here forever, I promise."
Su Yichen eyes glisten. "Forever?"
Han Yuan nods his head.
"And you'll protect my mommy?"
"And I'll protect you and your mommy. You won't be able to get rid of me, even if you wanted to." He casts a glance at Su Lian. His last sentence is clearly meant for her.
Su Yichen dries his eyes and tries to stand straight like a soldier. "I was already protecting mommy while you were gone."
"Good boy, that's my son." Han Yuan carries Su Yichen and puts him on his lap. "I'm proud of you."
Su Yichen's ears turn red. This is the first time he has gotten praise from his father. It makes him feel very happy and a little nervous.
Watching their interaction from her seat, Su Lian feels slightly guilty.All Han Yuan had to do was say one sentence to make her baby blush.
It was obvious that her son wanted a father, but she has been preventing them from meeting each other all this time.
Even though she personally hates Han Yuan, that has nothing to do with her son.
Su Lian's mood plummets. She thought she could be both for him; a loving mother and a providing father, but she was wrong.
Will Yichen hate her for it?
Han Yuan looks up and stares at her grieving form.
Even though he is upset that she hid Yichen from him, he is still glad that the boy is his. Su Lian gave birth to a son for him and he couldn't be happier. Towards her, he is very grateful.
He carries Su Yichen over to her and places him on her lap. "I have to go to the office. There is a meeting later this evening. I'll come back once it's over."
"I don't need to know your schedule."Su Lian turns her head away from him, but he just plants a kiss on top of it.
Her cheeks turn red. "You--"
Su Yichen looks reluctant to part with his father. They just met. What if he doesn't come back again?
As if reading his son's thought, Han Yuan looks down at Su Yichen and rubs his head. "I'll be back before you go to bed. While I'm gone, you have to protect your mommy."
Su Yichen immediately puts on a brave face and nods his head vigorously. "I'll protect my mommy and my grandma."
"Good boy." With that, Han Yuan tidies up his clothes and leaves the villa.
On his way back to the office, he gets a call from his assistant.
Deng Xiao: "Sir, there are police officers here."
Han Yuan: "What for?"
Deng Xiao: "The two female employees have been found. They are both unconscious in the hospital right now."
Han Yuan: "So what do the police officers want?"
Deng Xiao: "The women were tortured and starved and before they lost consciousness, they said the one who kidnapped them was Shen Xun, your former bodyguard."
