“Please have a seat, Your Excellency. The servants are stuck and don’t know what to do.” Amber once again requested that he sit. He began to move in stiff and awkward motions as he pulled out his chair and sat opposite to Amber. As the table wasn’t too large, Amber and Kalix were able to study the other’s expressions closely.
“Prepare the meal,” The butler, who had been keeping an eye on the situation, quickly ordered the servants to bring out the meals at the perfect timing.
A meat pie with salted beef, an artichoke cooked together with wild mushrooms, a cross bun filled with grapes, small freshwater fish grilled with grain powder coating, and finally, a multi-colored jelly with sweet agave sap came one by one and were laid on the table.
Amber was quite surprised at the food on the table. It was a luxurious meal that was difficult to see at dining tables of the Eastern lands.
Typical fare consisted of foods preserved in salt, but what came out consisted of meat, vegetables, fish, and even dessert. For the Eastern lands that lacked natural resources, vegetables and fish were more precious than meat. Dessert even more so.
Though this couldn’t be compared to the extravagant meals of the West, the meal in front of her was quite the luxurious feast, fit for the lord of the Eastern lands.
The chef filled up Amber’s glass with wine with a satisfied expression on his face. As he made his way to Kalix’s side of the table, he began pouring wine into Kalix’s wine glass as he spoke. “As you ordered, we have prepared aperfect meal fit for a banquet.”
“… I am sure that I said I’d eat separately.”
So that was the reason why he was so surprised at the sight of Amber. It seemed like Kalix also planned to have his meal separately.
But the chef reacted like he’d never heard such a thing.
“Hm? But Your Excellency, you said it yourself. You ordered us to put our heart and soul into making today’s meal. So I…”
As the chef kept speaking, Kalix glared at him with terrifying eyes. Even the butler standing next to the chef had his eyes wide open and deliberately stepped on the chef’s [1] foot.
The color drained from the chef’s face and he quickly shut his mouth with his hand.
Kalix quickly turned to Amber and studied her expression.
Amber simply sat without a word as she stared back. Though the food was cooling she didn’t have any intention to touch her food just yet. The fact that Kalix planned to have his meal separately wasn’t surprising.
‘But if he really was planning to eat separately…’ Amber looked at the amazing feast prepared in front of her with a bewildered expression. ‘Does that mean this feast was prepared just for me?’
Even though there was no other way to interpret the situation, it was hard to believe.
‘But why?’ Why did Kalix care about Amber enough to give this order? ‘To keep his promise?’
Amber thought back to the conversation that she had with Kalix back in the drill hall. At the time Amber asked him to treat her with courtesy. And Kalix promised to do so.
‘But it’s a bit too much to say that all this is because of that promise.’ Amber’s only intention was for him to speak to her with honorifics and courtesy.
As Amber looked at the food with suspicion in her eyes, Kalix opened his mouth. “All of you, leave the room.”
It seemed like he was angered that the chef did not properly understand his order. The servants and the chef paled and quickly left the dining room.
“I need to attend to your meal and…”
“I’ll be fine, just leave the room.”
Even the butler who stayed to attend to Kalix was immediately rejected. The butler looks at the Duke and his wife with worried eyes before bowing his head and stepping out.
