The party progressed further into the dungeon, entering and leaving cave rooms as they went. After yet another encounter against the dungeon monsters, the group decided to have a short rest.

“Nice, I found another Magic Crystal,” Flavia picked up another tiny crystal from the ground.

“Wow, we got a few extra this time.” Lilna clapped her hands, happy to get another one as well.

“Yeah, lucky. Let me check if any more dropped,” the excited bunny girl went to see if they missed any.

“Are you tired, Emilia?” Narias asked, seeing her lost in thought.

“Ah, no. Thank you for your concern, Narias,” she responded kindly. “I was just thinking…”

“Yes?” Narias looked at her.

“When we find ourselves in a new room with more than one path that leads out of it, I’ve noticed that you always choose the first entrance to the right. Is there any specific reason why you do that?” Emilia wanted to know.

“Oh, that…” he rubbed the back of his head.

“Really? Sorry, I wasn’t aware of it,” Lilna commented after hearing Emilia’s words.

“What were you not aware of, Lilna?” Flavia returned just in time to hear what Lilna had said. She then added. “Shmuck… I didn’t find any more crystals.”

“I was just saying that each time we were to leave one of the cave rooms, Narias would always choose the path furthest to the right. I was just wondering why?” Emilia told Flavia what she asked Narias.

“Oh, yeah. Now that you’ve mentioned it, the last cave room we were in had three paths to choose from and we went to the one on the right. What’s the deal with that, partner?” Flavia asked while touching her lips with one finger.

“I must say, I am curious as well,” the group’s guide came closer to listen as well. “I’ve never seen any student group do that before. I highly doubt it is a coincidence.”

Aaah… what? Geez… How do I explain this..? Suddenly, Narias felt on the spot.

“I don’t mind going right,” Growly was the only one who didn’t seem to care.

“Well, ahm…” Narias thought about it. “The main reason is because we don’t know where we are going.”

“Because we don’t know where we’re going?” Flavia tilted her to the side, slightly confused. “Then why not take the left path instead of the right one?”

“Because we started our exploration with the entrance furthest to right,” he answered.

“Why does it matter, Narias?” Emilia asked.

“You see, this is our very first Magic Dungeon exploration. I’ve been here before once, but that doesn’t really count,” he added before continuing his explanation. “Since we don’t know our way around, we might get lost easily too. So, to make easier for us, it’s better to stick to one side all the time. This way we will explore parts of the dungeon we haven’t been to yet, and at the same time, we will know which way to go if we want to go back without getting lost.”

“Woooah,” Flavia gasped, totally impressed. “No wonder you’re so smart, partner.”

“Wow, I would’ve never thought about it like that,” Lilna commented, probably still being a little confused about his explanation.

“You really thought it through, Narias,” Emilia was in awe. “But what about the markings on the walls that we leave behind? Wouldn’t that be enough?”

“That’s right. Shouldn’t the markings be enough?” Flavia added as well.

“Maybe, but it’s the Magic Dungeon we are talking about here. We don’t know if the markings stay during the whole time while we stay inside the dungeon. As you know, once we leave, we won’t be able to get back inside the Magic Dungeon until the reset cycle completes. I am certain the markings we leave behind will disappear after that happens,” Narias pointed out. “So, the next time we come here again, we’ll have to start all over. If we choose random paths each time, we won’t know which one we’ve visited before. As a result, it will be really difficult to backtrack where we need to go if we want to find the current floor’s boss monster faster. But if we stick to one side all the time, eventually we will explore each part of the dungeon, knowing we don’t need to go there again next time.”

“Hah, now that makes sense. And that’s what I like about you, partner. You make the most confusing things sound so simple,” Flavia suddenly clung to Narias. “I know who I am sticking close to while where’re here.”

“Huh?” obviously, her boldness made Narias feel embarrassed again.

“That is… I… Ahem… We’re all in it together here, Flavia…” Emilia brushed her unruly, snow-white hair to the side, then went to sit closer to Narias too. Her cheeks were sparkling with a frosty, red glow.

“I must say, I wouldn’t want to get lost in the Magic Dungeon,” Lilna added with a smile.

“Good explanation,” Growly thanked Narias.

“I’ll go make sure there are no monsters around while you rest,” suddenly, Belinda wanted to excuse herself for some reason. She walked closer to the right side path out of the current cave room.

This kid… They way he thinks… The teacher was wondering in her head while waiting for the students. Only the students who take the third level exam to become a Guide would start working on how to navigate inside the dungeon. However, ‘he’ has a strategy worked out already. And I must admit, it’s a really smart one too. Hah, I wonder how far ahead has he planned in advance already? It seems going for the second floor’s boss monster wasn’t just a wishful thinking after all.

The exploration continued. After a short rest, the group was motivated to find the dungeon’s boss monster even more. As before, and without Narias even saying a word, the group chose the right path to leave the current cave room again.

The students were in high spirits and were more relaxed. The level one Fanged Wolves and level one Dungeon Crawlers didn’t pose much threat up to this point. By now, everyone got to fight the monsters more than a few times. Their training had paid off and they were able to deal with the creatures easily. They expected the same easy fight right before they’ve entered another cave.

“Hah, level one Fanged Wolves again,” Flavia slammed her right fist into her left palm excitedly.

“What about the Dungeon Crawlers?” Lilna was still careful about it.

“The ceiling is so high in this room, but I don’t see any of them up top,” Emilia pointed out.

“This will be easy then,” the excited bunny girl was ready for a fight.

“Hold on, something is different in this room,” Narias noticed something was off.

“What do you mean, partner? There are only a few Fanged Wolves around,” Flavia turned to him.

“Yes, but look at the room. It’s somewhat different, compared to the caves we’ve visited before,” he pointed out.

“No poking out rocks,” Growly noticed there were no stalactites or stalagmites in the room.

Actually, the cave was much wider and had less boulders and rocks in general inside. Especially the ones that the Dungeon Crawlers liked to hide around. There were rocks and boulder around. They were big enough for someone to hide in between them, but there weren’t that many.

“I think we need to be careful. Something doesn’t seem right,” for some reason, Narias’ gut was telling to be careful.

“Ok then, how do you want us to proceed, partner?” Flavia listened to him.

“Right…” he surveyed the cave to try and see how many monsters were there. “There won’t be anywhere to hide for us, so we need to stick close as a group. We can’t see if there are any more monsters hiding in between those rocks, but I’m sure there are some. We’ll start by attacking them from a distance. If any of the Fanged Wolves get close, Flavia and Growly will be the ones to deal with them. Is that ok?”

“Sure is,” the girl with the golden color hair and bunny ears grinned.

“I’ll smash ‘em,” Growly furrowed his eyebrows.

“Ok, let’s go,” Narias turned to face the middle of the cave.

There were four Fanged Wolves out in the open that that the group could see. All four of them were level one monsters. The students knew there could be more of them hiding somewhere. There always was, so they proceeded carefully. Each time before engaging the monsters, except when they’d encounter one or two stray Fanged Wolves while they walked, the group would always discuss a strategy before going in. And that’s what they did before engaging the monsters in the current cave.

“Wind…” Narias aimed at one of the Fanged Wolves laying on the top of the boulder. “Bullet!”

His Wind Bullet spell shot the monster through and killed it on the spot.

- ‘Growl!’ – its death alerted the rest of the Fanged Wolves in the cave. The beasts instantly sprung to their feet.

“Here they come. Wind Bullet!” Narias shot another Fanged Wolf before it jumped away.

“Ice Shards,” Emilia cast her spell and a few frozen crystals materialized in the air.

With another wave of her hand the frozen shards shot at one of the approaching monsters, piercing it through. Emilia’s spell killed the creature instantaneously.

“Water Blade,” Lilna followed with her own spell and hit one more Fanged Wolf with it, but didn’t kill it. “Oh, no!”

“Here I… come!” Flavia jumped in to finish it off.

- ‘Pow!’ – one punch was enough to take it down.

- ‘Growl!’ – another growl was heard and more Fanged Wolves showed up out of between the rocks.

“More are coming. Wind Blade,” Narias cast his spell. “What?”

But the monster was fast enough to evade his spell. It sprinted forward towards the group.

- ‘Smack!’ – Growly wasn’t about to let it through.

- ‘Bam!’ – the Fanged Wolf was blown away, but didn’t die as well.

“Eh?” the chubby bear boy gave it a confused yet manecing look, surprised to see the monster didn’t die.

“Wind Blade,” Narias followed with his spell just in time to finish it off before the said Fanged Wolf could spring to its feet.

That one was faster and stronger than the other ones. How come? Narias was surprised about it.

“More are coming. Haaa!” Flavia engaged another one.

The bunny girl was quick on her feet and kicked one of the Fanged Wolves into the gut, which was enough to kill it on the spot this time. However, another one was about to jump on her right away.

“Frost Blast,” fortunately, Emilia was there to save her.

The monster was hit by the Snow Princess spell while it was still in midair and was instantly frozen solid. As soon as the frozen Fanged Wolf fell on the ground it smashed into small ice pieces before its body vanished completely.

“Emilia! Wind Burst!” Narias blasted himself from his spot.

When Emilia turned to help Flavia, another Fanged Wolf jumped from the side at the Snow Princess herself. The monster was fast enough to close the distance in between them and was about to reach her.

“Wind… Burst!” but Narias was just in time to blow the monster away. “Huh?”

Again, the Fanged Wolf was blown away, but didn’t die after the hit.

“Ice Shards,” luckily, Emilia didn’t panic and finished the monster with her own spell.

“What gives? Some of the monsters don’t die from a single hit anymore,” Flavia shouted after she kicked another one, but it didn’t die again.

“They are level two monsters!” Narias finally pointed out.

When the group has entered the room, the only monsters they could see out in the open were the level one Fanged Wolves. The students knew there could be more hiding in the room. However, they couldn’t know if they were level one or level two monsters. In the midst of the battle, the students were so focused on the fight, they hadn’t noticed that some of the Fanged Wolves were level two monsters.

“Hah, so that’s how it is. I shouldn’t hold back then,” Flavia took a stance and her muscles became tense.

“No, you shouldn’t use your Anima-Transformation now, Flavia!” Narias shouted.

“I know, I wasn’t going to, partner. Haah!” the excited bunny girl jumped up. “Ha-yaa!”

- ‘Bam!’ – and kicked a level two Fanged Wolf from above. – ‘Smack!’ – Then punched it again to finish the monster off.

“Water Blade!” Lilna cast another spell.

“Frost Blast!” Emilia followed.

“Wind Blade!” Narias attacked as well.

“Grr… Graah!” Growly was getting serious too. He wasn’t a bear beast-human for nothing. A smack with his powerful paw was enough to take down even a level two Fanged Wolf in one hit.

“What? There’s more? Where are they all coming from?” Flavia was taken aback when more Fanged Wolves came out of nowhere.

“There’s more coming from this side too!” Lilna exclaimed.

“There’s so many,” Emilia tried to stay calm, but it was evident they were getting overwhelmed. “Frozen Blast!”

What? Even more jumped out from behind that rock. But there’s not enough space to hide behind those for all of them. Wait, maybe there’s something else behind that rock? Narias was trying to access why there were so many monsters and where were they coming from.

“Hah!” Flavia punched another level one Fanged Wolf, which was also enough to kill it.

- ‘Graaa!’ – but then another one jumped on her from the side.

“Wha…” the bunny girl was a second away from being bitten.

“Wind Shield!” Narias was just in time to protect his girlfriend. The Fanged Wolf hit his Wind Shield head on.

“Take that!” Narias stopping the wolf from reaching her was enough for Flavia to turn around and smack the monster good.

Damn, there’s still so many of them. Narias tried to see how many Fanged Wolves there were.

The students were strong enough to fend the monsters off. The problem was, more and more Fanged Wolves were coming out from behind the rocks. The surprise of the constant monster appearance out of nowhere was what was getting everyone confused.

We need to do something to get the situation under control. Narias was trying to come up with something. If we could slow the monsters down somehow then… Wait! I know.

“Emilia! Cast your Frozen Stage spell!” Narias suddenly shouted.

“What? A Frozen Stage? What kind of spell is that?” Flavia exclaimed.

“What are you saying, Narias? I don’t know that spell,” Emilia was confused herself.

“You know, the spell that you used during our training! The one that froze the ground solid under our feet!” He tried to explain.

“Oh, that…” Emilia realized what he was talking about. “Ok.”

She started chanting a spell.

“Flavia! Growly! Get back here! Wind Shield!” Narias instructed for his friends to get out of the way while casting his protective shield to stop the closest monster from advancing. Both, the bunny girl and the chubby bear boy quickly ran back.

“Frozen Ice Mirror!” they were just in time, because Emilia finished chanting her spell.

In an instant, ice shot from under her feet, covering the ground in a sparkling, solid ice. It ran forward, towards where the monsters were coming from, freezing everything on the way. Almost half of the cave’s floor was soon covered by the frozen ice. Not only the ground was frozen solid, but the surface was so smooth and flat, you could easily see your reflection on it.

That didn’t seem to faze the Fanged Wolves, however. The monsters dashed forward despite the ice being there. But as soon as the creatures stepped, or jumped, on the ice-covered ground, they slipped and fell, not being able to keep the balance straight. The monsters tried to get up and jump forward, but were bumping into each other because of how slippery it had become. It almost looked comical in a way.

“Ok, my turn. Everyone, get behind me,” Narias instructed, stepping forward himself. He waited until his group members went behind him, as well as for more Fanged Wolves to jump onto the icy trap. “Fire… Wall!”

And then he cast his most powerful fire spell. The Fire Wall extended far and wide, catching almost every single Fanged Wolf in it. The monsters were caught in the fire and burned to death in mere seconds and it didn’t matter if they were level on or level two monsters. Narias got rid of most of them with a single spell.

“Hey, a few of the Fanged Wolves are still alive!” Flavia exclaimed after the fires subsided.

“I slam them!” Growly rushed forward.

Thanks to Narias’ Fire Wall spell the ice had melted, so it was easy to move again. Both Growly and Flavia dashed forward to finish the few remaining monsters alive.

“Ice Shards,” Emilia cast her spell to assist them.

“Water Splash,” Lilna helped as well.

After Emilia’s and Narias’ combined attack, which took out a huge number of the Fanged Wolves in the room, it wasn’t too difficult for the group to kill the remaining monsters. Thanks to group’s brilliant teamwork, and excellent leadership, the cave was cleared of the monsters without anyone getting hurt.

Phew… That was rough… Narias finally took a breather.

“There aren’t any more, are there?” Lilna asked, still looking around worryingly.

“Humph…” Flavia checked her surroundings, trying to catch any suspicious sound with her ears. “Naah… I can’t see or hear any monsters around.”

“No more,” Growly was short with his words, as usual.

“Good. Is anyone injured?” Narias asked.

“I am… fine,” Emilia was first to respond.

The rest of the students confirmed they were completely unharmed too.

“Phew, great,” Narias was happy to learn that. “Now, let’s look around this cave room.”

Narias was extremely curious why there were so many monsters in a single cave this time.
