Chapter 133

Good morning.

It’s morning, yet it doesn’t feel like it at all in the abyss.

After all, it’s constantly this dimly lit – or should I say, dimly dark. Staying here for too long could really mess up your internal clock.

There’s a theory that humans reset their internal clocks by soaking in the morning sun. It might be a good idea to teleport to the surface just to catch the sunrise.

While I was preparing breakfast, Tera peered in through the window.

“Ah, Tera, good morning.”

“Kyuu.”

Tera coos in a cute way. While its sounds are intelligible language to Kadomi-kun, I can’t understand what it’s saying without a link between us.

“I’ll think about Tera’s breakfast later with Kadomi-kun’s help.”

“Kyuu.”

Yeah, I really have no idea what it’s saying.

Well, it’s okay. Ketorami would probably sort it out if it really came down to it.

…By the way, I wonder why Ketorami was able to communicate with Glida.

Maybe there’s some kind of unique monster network? It wouldn’t be surprising if there was.

Everyone has woken up, so it’s time for breakfast.

Tera went to feed itself after getting permission from Kadomi-kun.

Ketorami has long since left. He never asked for permission. Yeah, I like his independence.

“Then, we’ll have to rely on Kadomi-kun and Tera again today.”

“Uh-huh.”

Today, like the days before, Kadomi-kun will explore the abyss by flying, while the others have some free time.

“What shall we do today?”

“Uno?”

They’re in the mood to play, huh? Well, that’s fine.

“Since we have the chance, let’s make any equipment we’re missing. We also have fabric from the temple.”

The thread from Glida is outstanding, but we also have the fabrics and clothes that were stored in the temple.

“Equipment, you say?”

“Yeah, if we can make gear with darkness resistance, that’d be great.”

We are in the abyss, after all.

Monsters here are suited to this environment.

Meaning, they might have darkness-based attacks. If it’s magic, “Magic Nullification” would handle it, but if it’s not purely magic, it can be quite troublesome.

…I wonder what darkness attacks entail. I understand fire or water, but darkness is a mystery.

So, for today, we’ll work on making and repairing equipment while waiting for Kadomi-kun’s findings. Yep.

…I think among the fabrics we got from the temple, there might be something suitable for this.

The white fabric with a mysterious sheen turned out to have “Darkness Resistance” and “Cradle of Light” properties. “Cradle of Light” might not be relevant to anyone but Kariya, but “Darkness Resistance” seems quite useful, so I’d like to make use of it.

Then, there’s a garment made from this white fabric with patterns woven into it – a kind of hooded cloak or cape. This one has “Darkness Resistance” and “Divine Protection.”

There’s also a coat-like item with the same effects.

And, two sashes adorned with “Wisdom.”

…Hmm. So, let’s get started.

There’s apparently no fire in the abyss. Any fire-like phenomena are usually related to darkness.

So, gear with “Heat Nullification” isn’t necessary.

The “Heat Nullification” equipment will primarily be switched to “Darkness Resistance,” specifically Kadomi-kun and Toriumi’s cloaks.

The other “Heat Nullification” parts are mostly used as linings, so it’s a bit difficult to replace them.

Therefore, I’ll have to remake those completely… It’s a hassle, but it’s necessary!

However, since we have the cloak and coat, we can distribute these to Kariya and Hagasaki-kun, saving the effort of making two new pieces for them. Wait, no, hold on, that would mean sacrificing the “Magic Nullification” aspect…

…I’ll make “Magic Nullification” innerwear! Yes!

Ah, busy! Fun! But exhausting!

So, when Kadomi-kun came back for lunch, we had a meal, and as he was about to leave again, I hurriedly finished the hemming and other final touches on the new equipment and sent him off with it.

…With everything now predominantly white, it stands out nicely even in the abyss!

And then, the others also started working on various things.

The armor and other gear had been in its strongest form since the Demon Army days. Yeah, this is a good opportunity to remake a full set.

However… yes, I’m quite fast at making equipment. I even surprise myself. Previously, making all these would have taken a day.

Somehow, my sewing-related speed has increased significantly. Not just sewing, but cutting, measuring, and such too.

Even when I pin things without looking, they turn out perfect, and sometimes I double-take at my own work. It’s quite impressive!

Also, I’ve gotten better at estimating sizes just by looking at a person’s physique.

This skill was particularly useful when making the dress for Utagawa-san.

…Well, I sometimes wonder if it’s a bit of a privacy invasion. Yeah.

Moreover, I’ve always been relatively good at this, but I think I’ve gotten even better at mentally converting flat patterns into three-dimensional shapes. Pattern-making has become easier too.

…Thinking about it, the effects of being a “Head Maid” are quite prominent.

So, all the equipment for everyone is ready. But… are we going to continue exploring the abyss?

“We don’t know what the underground is like, and there might be facilities that count as classrooms. Let’s continue a thorough exploration. It’s like proving a negative, searching for something we don’t know exists.”

…Right.

Indeed, that’s true.

If there’s anything in the abyss that counts as a classroom, we must take it with us.

We don’t know if such a thing exists, but since we can’t definitively say it doesn’t, we have no choice but to search.

Hmm, it does feel like proving a negative.

“So, it seems we will continue exploring the abyss for a while.”

…I propose that we return to the surface once a day to get some sunlight.

[I found something, come here.]

While I was busy sewing, we received a message from Kadomi-kun, so we all headed to his location.

“…Wow.”

“Amazing, how is this even possible?”

…What we found was a blue sky, something that shouldn’t exist in this abyss covered with rocky ceilings.

“…Ah, it’s not actually the sky. I was surprised. It’s the light from these flowers reflecting off the ceiling, making it look like the sky.”

Upon closer inspection, it wasn’t the sky but just the light from blue flowers reflecting off a lower part of the ceiling.

Probably, because we teleported here suddenly, it seemed like the sky at first glance. If we had come here while observing the ceiling getting lower, we might not have been deceived.

Still, such a strong light source was something we hadn’t seen since coming to the abyss, and it truly had the impact of a sky-like illusion.

It was incredibly beautiful.

The gently glowing blue lights made the journey to the abyss feel worthwhile.

Even the members of our group, who usually lack a sense of aesthetic, were captivated, and we spent some time gazing at the blue flowers and the faux sky.

…And then, something even more significant.

“We found it.”

Looking in the direction President pointed, there was a corner where light of various colors mixed together to appear white.

…And there, a powder enveloped in indistinct colored light was slowly descending.

“It’s ‘Ashes of the Abyss.'”

President carefully collected the “Ashes of the Abyss” into a test tube he took out from his pocket.

“We can make the spirit medicine now.”

…Finally.

It’s been a long journey. But with this, maybe even the choir members have a chance.

…Well, there are still many challenges ahead.

But for now, we can consider the first major hurdle overcome.

“…But I wonder, where does this ash come from?”

The “Ashes of the Abyss” seems to fall out of nowhere, from the void.

Even when we try to touch its source, there’s nothing there – just empty air. It’s a mystery.

“What’s more intriguing is this flower. This flower is likely the one that grows from the ‘Azure Sky Seed’.”

…The one that withered instantly?

I observe closely, but since I can’t remember the flower that withered in an instant, it’s hard to confirm.

However, this flower is blue, translucent, and quite beautiful. It indeed seems fitting for the name “Azure Sky.”

“It’s worth a try to plant some. Everything is an experiment.”

President said this and buried an “Azure Sky Seed” in the soil.

“It’s not growing.”

“No, it isn’t.”

But, no flowers bloomed! Not even a sprout!

“There might be some specific conditions required.”

“Seems like it.”

…Well, right now, the spirit medicine is more important.

Once the spirit medicine is ready, we’ll face even more challenging issues… particularly about life (in the literal sense).

…But thinking about it now might just be futile…

The spirit medicine production team began their work.

In such times, a chemistry lab proves to be an invaluable facility.

…Yes, the spirit medicine is being made in beakers and flasks!

“…Hey, is it really okay to make spirit medicine like this?”

“What are you saying? This is the best equipment we have!”

“Right, now we need 5 ml of dragon’s blood.”

“Where did we put the volumetric pipette?”

…Ah, there’s zero otherworldly ambiance. The “spirit” in “spirit medicine” seems to be fading away.

Can such a medicine, made in this manner, truly bring someone back to life?

…First, it’s an experiment, right…

…Yeah.
