Qiu YiBai probably said it offhandedly, her purpose likely to help her save money.

There probably . . . wasn’t any special meaning behind her words.

But Shen NingXin still took particular notice of it, and she immediately remembered it in her heart.

Shen NingXin then nodded, smiling as she responded softly, “Alright, then I will buy more ribs and wait for President Qiu to come.”

“You don’t need to buy a lot!” Upon hearing the word “more”, Qiu YiBai reflexively refuted, “I can’t eat much!”

It seemed like she was scared by her.

“Then I will try and make the ribs tastier,” Shen NingXin said, her smiling expression both pretty and warm.

Making the howling wind outside sound not as cold anymore.

Qiu YiBai looked at her, her ears reddening after a while, and she lowered her head to straighten out the umbrella.

She lightly opened her lips and responded in a low voice, “Okay, I’ll wait.”

It seemed like she was a little shy again, lowering her voice in an attempt to ease the awkwardness.

It’s our President Qiu’s usual trick.

Shen NingXin stared at her side profile for a while, and for some reason, she suddenly remembered the scene where Qiu YiBai was drunk that night. Pausing for a moment, she then brought her pinky forward.

She even raised a brow to signal Qiu YiBai.

President Qiu, let’s pinky promise ah?

“What?” Qiu YiBai wasn’t sure what she meant by this. “Are you trying to make a pinky promise with me?”

Shen NingXin nodded. “Yes.”

After she finished speaking, she heard this person let out a cold “Hmph”. “You’re so old and you still want to make a pinky promise, how childish are you?”

Shen NingXin knew she would say so.

Shen NingXin smiled in her heart, secretly making fun of her, saying that it’s not as childish as President Qiu wanting to make a pinky promise with someone while crying.

But she could only dare to think this in her heart and couldn’t say it.

So she pretended to not hear Qiu YiBai’s words and continued to bring her pinky forward, her eyes curving into a crescent with a smile on her face.

Qiu YiBai couldn’t do anything about it, so in the end, she sighed helplessly with furrowed eyebrows before finally putting her hand out.

They hooked their fingers together, the different sensation and temperature foreign yet familiar.

Qiu YiBai was taken aback, and a blurry picture suddenly flickered in her mind.

It was as if . . . the two of them performed this same action on some day not long ago.

Qiu YiBai was in a daze, taking a while before finally returning to her senses. Coughing lightly, she put that hand into her pocket.

Glancing at Shen NingXin, after some moments, she raised her hand and opened the door, walking forward.

But just as Qiu YiBai was about to turn a corner to the elevator, she subconsciously turned around and said to Shen NingXin, “See you tomorrow.”

When she spoke the words, a sense of familiarity suddenly struck her.

And she didn’t even know the reason.

“. . . . . .”

The days quickly passed by, and as time elapsed, the Dragon Boat Festival1 soon arrived.

There was a total of three days off, but it was really just one additional day compared to usual, from Thursday to Saturday, where it was necessary to work overtime on Sunday to make up for it.

Thinking about it, it was no different from the normal weekends.

But everyone was still happy, and taking advantage of lunch break, they discussed in the group chat what plans everyone had for the Dragon Boat Festival this time.

Some said that they were going back to their hometown for the holiday, some said they were going to take their children to the amusement park, and a few younger ones said they had no special arrangements, and in the end, decided to travel together.

The group of them chatted for a while before finally determining a destination. Afterward, they tagged a few people, asking them if they wanted to join.

Shen NingXin had good relations with people at the office, so she was naturally among those who were tagged.

“I thank everyone for the invitation, but I have something to do during the holiday, so I can’t go. You guys have fun ah.”

Shen NingXin hurriedly replied upon seeing this.

She didn’t lie; there was indeed something she needed to do.

After all . . . wasn’t this holiday a good chance? It was the perfect time for her to invite Qiu YiBai over to dinner for some braised pork ribs.

Both she and Qiu YiBai had been busy the past few days, and she had neither time nor energy. Now that there was plenty of time, she naturally couldn’t miss it.

“Alright then. You should have fun too, ah.”

Seeing her refusal, everyone was able to understand and didn’t insist, continuing to invite others.

There were quite a few people, and Shen NingXin saw the names of many acquaintances.

The group chat was very lively, where the noise only stopped when everyone clocked back in. The office soon quieted down, and everyone began to continue working.

Shen NingXin didn’t have much work at the moment, completing everything soon. She inquired Zhao Jie through WeChat and seeing that she also didn’t have any other things to do, Shen NingXin secretly picked up her phone and began swiping through it to relax.

She first chatted with Meng Yao and the others and sent red envelopes to wish a happy Dragon Boat Festival Day in advance. Then, she clicked on Moments to see what her colleagues were up to. Finally, she clicked on Qiu YiBai’s Weibo.

Used to doing it, it had now become a habit and practically instinct.

She habitually refreshed the screen, then habitually scrolled down.

Afterward, Shen NingXin discovered that Qiu YiBai actually did post a new Weibo. It began with a series of cries and was followed by an evidently very angry sentence—

“I’m angry! No one remembered me!”

Ah?

Seeing this, Shen NingXin was taken aback. After some moments, she soon realized something and hurriedly opened the office group chat again.

Speedily scrolling to the start and then to the most recent message, she discovered that Qiu YiBai’s name wasn’t mentioned once.

No wonder she said that. This matter would upset anyone. This crybaby definitely must had felt she was ignored by everyone again.

Shen NingXin sighed, then raised her eyes to look in Qiu YiBai’s direction, and just as she expected, there was a cold expression on her face.

Her movements were also more forceful, where she practically threw the documents on the table.

She was . . . really angry ah.

Shen NingXin paused, gritting her teeth before making up her mind to bring the contract in her hand for Qiu YiBai to sign, feeling a little helpless yet bad for her.

She couldn’t let her be angry for too long; that wouldn’t be good for this child.

She should go coax her.

It wasn’t a secret that she wanted to invite Qiu YiBai over for a meal on the basis of the Dragon Boat Festival, so Shen NingXin didn’t bother hiding it, directly asking Qiu YiBai as she signed the contract.

As soon as she finished speaking, she saw Qiu YiBai’s hand that was holding the pen pause, and her eyes also lit up.

But she quickly returned to her usual appearance and opened her lips lightly, saying indifferently, “Don’t you have something to do during the Dragon Boat Festival? Why’d you suddenly think of treating me to a meal?”

Her hard tone was mixed with a hint of pridefulness.

Turns out that even in her anger, she still noticed Shen NingXin’s response in the group chat.

Shen NingXin lightly coughed, wanting to laugh all of a sudden. After finally managing to suppress it, she shook her head.

“I do indeed have something to do,” she confessed, “But it doesn’t conflict with me inviting you to a meal. This was my original plan.”

“Really?” Qiu YiBai didn’t believe her.

Shen NingXin nodded, her tone affirmative. “Really, I bought the spare ribs in advance. All that’s left is for you to eat them.”

She even bought the ribs already. It seemed there still was someone who cared about her.

Hearing her words, Qiu YiBai was both a little relieved and happy, two-thirds of her anger quickly disappearing.

After cheerfully signing the contract, she handed it back.

Silent for some moments, probably feeling apologetic about making only Shen NingXin spend money, she then said fiercely, “Then you have to make it taste good. If not, then I won’t eat it, and I won’t bring you a single Zongzi2.”

Interpreting her words, what she meant was essentially you take care of buying the ingredients for cooking, and I’ll buy the Zongzi.

Alright then.

Understanding her inner thoughts, Shen NingXin quickly followed along with her words, saying that she’ll definitely work hard.

“Then you can go back now.” Satisfied, Qiu YiBai waved her hand, signaling Shen NingXin to leave, then continued to type on her computer.

After a while, during her coffee break, she posted a new Weibo.

She said—

“Someone thought of me. It seems like Shen NingXin is quite conscientious.”

Following it was a small smiling face, implying that her mood changed from cloudy to sunny. (TL/N: an idiom comparing mood to the weather.)

Seeing this, Shen NingXin didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.

Two days later, the holidays finally arrived.

Shen NingXin didn’t sleep in and woke up early. After washing up, she put on a cute house skirt and then began to prepare the ingredients.

After all, it was a holiday, so although there were only the two of them, there still needed to be a sense of festivity, where there should be a sumptuous feast.

Otherwise . . . without the atmosphere of a holiday, what’s the difference from a normal day.

Shen NingXin paused, suddenly remembering something from a long time ago.

The dining table, which had been tight to seat five people, at some point, became empty all of a sudden.

Five turned into four, four turned into three, the numbers decreasing as time elapsed, until only she was left in the end.

The atmosphere during holidays also became weaker and weaker, where, in the end, it was no different from a normal day.

Because there was no reason to anymore. One person couldn’t even finish all that much food.

Suddenly remembering the past, Shen NingXin was in a daze, taking a long time before coming back to her senses.

She sighed and didn’t think about it anymore, continuing with the task at hand.

Before she could work for long, the doorbell rang.

Qiu YiBai was so early, too!

Shen NingXin was a little surprised and hurriedly washed her hands before running to open the door.

When the door opened, Qiu YiBai stood outside as expected.

Today, she wore a black dress, the kind that gave off both sexual appeal yet made her feel unapproachable. It especially fit her skin color, and she looked even prettier than usual; she was a beauty all throughout.

Except, upon looking down, the beauty was carrying a ton of stuff in her hand.

“. . . . . .”

Shen NingXin scanned it and found various types of fruits and vegetables, even some meat and a bag of eggs, and finally, a thick stack of Zongzi leaves.

“The boxes of Zongzi at the supermarket weren’t very good. They’re all sold in packaging, so you can’t be sure of the quality inside,” perhaps noticing Shen NingXin’s surprise, Qiu YiBai spoke as she walked in, “So I just bought the raw materials instead. Let’s make them ourselves.”

“That works,” Shen NingXin responded with a nod, then asked after a moment, “But why did you buy so many things, President Qiu?”

“Is there something wrong?” Qiu YiBai looked at her. “Isn’t this a given when visiting someone.”

How grandiose she was making this.

Shen NingXin smiled when she heard her words and suddenly remembered the fact that she herself had prepared a ton of dishes; there was no excuse to laugh at her. She then softly responded, “Ah, I see.”

After that, she hurried to set up the things Qiu YiBai had brought, then poured her a glass of water using the one with the puppy print and told her to rest for a while.

After some time, the two finally took their positions in the kitchen.

“Let me see what kind of raw materials you bought,” Shen NingXin said.

“En,” Qiu YiBai answered with a nod, opening the shopping bag and taking the things out.

It was rather normal at first, red dates, glutinous rice, red bean paste, Zongzi leaves . . . but then it became puzzling near the end. Qiu YiBai actually took out a large box of chocolates.

It was still the kind of brand that was extremely expensive, where a large box full of them would cost at least a few hundred yuan.

Shen NingXin was dumbfounded, raising her eyes to look at her, “President Qiu, what is this for?”

Qiu YiBai said in a righteous manner, “To make Zongzi with.”

Shen NingXin: “Cho . . . colate-flavored Zongzi?”

“Yes,” Qiu YiBai said, “Is there a problem? Don’t you like chocolate?”

As soon as she finished speaking, Shen NingXin fell into a daze. After a long silence, she suddenly remembered that what Qiu YiBai brought back for her on that business trip was also chocolate.

It’s likely that Qiu YiBai happened to catch sight of the occasional times she ate chocolate at the office, thus having always believed she liked it.

Truthfully, that’s quite warm-hearted.

But she’s also never eaten chocolate stuffed Zongzi before . . .

Seeing this, Shen NingXin sighed. After staring at the box of chocolates for a while, in the end, she decided to look up how to make it.

She was rather attentive in her study, not saying anything else or making any other movements during this period.

Instead, the Qiu YiBai on the side started moving.

Observing Shen NingXin’s expression, likely misunderstanding that she didn’t like it, Qiu YiBai subconsciously opened the box and secretly took a piece out and put it in her mouth.

Tasting it, she discovered that it actually tasted pretty good, so she took out another one and delivered it to Shen NingXin’s mouth.

“Try it,” she said, inadvertently putting on a straight face, but her tone was a little expectant and nervous, “It actually tastes pretty good.”

“If you really don’t like it . . . then I’ll go down and buy another box.”

“The Dragon Boat Festival is a traditional Chinese holiday which occurs on the fifth day of the fifth month of the traditional Chinese calendar” and it “commemorates the death of the poet and minister Qu Yuan (c. 340–278 BC) of the ancient state of Chu during the Warring States period of the Zhou dynasty.” “Zongzi or simply zong is a traditional Chinese rice dish made of glutinous rice stuffed with different fillings and wrapped in bamboo leaves, or sometimes with reed or other large flat leaves. They are cooked by steaming or boiling.” It is eaten during the Dragon Boat Festival.
