[As an animal you may choose to remain the same size, or you may physically become larger when you level.  Do you wish to grow or to remain the same size?  Your stats will be slightly affected by your choice.]

Hmm.  I've seen plenty of rats, and some of them were bigger than the other rats.  But they weren't that much bigger.  And 'slightly' seems to mean it isn't that much.  Might as well.. maybe it'll make it easier the next time I need to open a container.

[You have selected 'yes'.]

Relative to the bird it's a fairly significant change.  But.. well, that's relative to a tiny bird.  In absolute terms being two inches longer just isn't that much.  However the gigantic avians work, it isn't like this.

[Choose a skill to gain.]

[Fly level 3->4] [Basic bird-type attacks] [Basic Scouting] [Strong Stomach -> Omnivore level 1] [Basic Farming] [Basic Animal Husbandry]

Hmm.  These aren't clear.  I've been getting animals to do a lot for me.. but husbandry is more about raising them than ordering them around.  Still, since it seems 'basic' skills can upgrade into actual skills at the next level maybe I should take it.

I don't think I need basic attacks.. Since they're all based on numbers, and my numbers are low, so having basic attacks won't be much use.  Better flight would be great, but my flight is still good enough.  Although it would help me if I need to fly during a storm or another encounter with an avian.

So it's down to flight, basic scouting, basic farming, or basic animal husbandry.  Farming might seem like the least attractive one, but it'd be the one most surprising for an animal to have, and I'm sure I could grow all kinds of strange tricks with it.  Plus that professional farmer I met had farming 5.  I don't think I'd need that much in order to grow things.  Plus, I do have years.  Hmm.

I'll take Flight.  Whatever it is, it'll help, and I'm sure I'll want it at some point.  I'll take something like husbandry or farming or scouting next level.  Plus I might get a more interesting skill for that.

[Flight skill increased to 4.  Raucous may now hover, may gain more speed in a dive, and can now gain altitude much more easily.  Takeoffs are now quicker and require much less space.  Air Agility is increased, although still not perfect.]

Alright.  I could look at my new numbers.. but nah.  If that human, the reincarnation human is watching me, I'll avoid looking at them out of spite.  Not like they matter, anyway.  I'm sure sooner or later I'll see them again.

Time to head for the next town, the mountain town of Azdira.  The wind is mostly calm, and the clouds above are stripy, banded altocumulus.  Fine flying weather.  The bird takes off swiftly, and flies up rapidly with great beats of his wings.

It's only five or six minutes to reach all the way up to cloud level, wings taking great scoops of air, seemingly affecting the wind even beyond the end of their tips.  Raucous does a few happy aerobatics on the way up, loops, swoops, banks, and rolls.  Flying upside down doesn't work, though, that leads to a quick loss of air and a brief vertical fall.  Better, the g-forces do not seem to affect him as much, allowing for a quicker and easier pull out than he's used to.

Hmm.  So this is what having a world running on numbers means.  It's addictive.  I can see how it can lead to power, but it can also lead to fun.  I think in the future I'll just take skills based on whatever I think will be the most fun.  Power is an illusion, after all.

After about another hour of travel, the forest cover begins getting more complete, and the relatively flat land gets hillier and hillier.  There are some swift streams broken up by dirt roads, with fish flashing in them.  There are also the occasional animal.. or monster.. below.  Bears seem to exist, as do trees with functional limbs (happily colour-coded by their red leaves despite the green spring foliage), as well as some quite oversized deer.  Deer with antlers, despite it not being the fall mating season.

And, on another bit of dirt road, a stuck carriage with a pair of now-dead draft animals.  There are three people outside it, fighting an equal number of vaguely bear-like spined creatures.  Hmm.  Raucous swoops down to check out the situation.
