 Jumping off a building

(Jump?)

Fang Qi’s school was a well-known university in the city, and everyone who came and went were young and beautiful students rushing to class or young couples doling out dog food.

Shen Dongqing’s gaze traveled across the young lovers, and he immediately reached out and embraced Zhou Wenyan’s arm, completely duplicating their appearance.

Zhou Wenyan cast a sidelong glance at him.

Shen Dongqing smiled as he puckered his lips. Zhou Wenyan appeared to grasp what he was expressing, and the two became even closer.

The trio was expressionless, and because they were in a mob of students, they stood out.

Yet, in terms of the party, this combo was unusual. There was a short boy in the back, Wu Jia, a social elite who didn’t look like a student at all in the front, two people practicing pda, and Fang Qi, an ordinary college student. You’d never put the group together no matter how you looked at it.

“Let’s hurry,” Fang Qi said, a little embarrassed by the onlookers.

Please handle this paranormal situation as soon as possible and go.

“Don’t worry, it’s not going anywhere anyway,” Shen Dongqing remarked.

Hence the party did not rush to the teaching block mentioned in the ghost story, but instead took a detour to the trademark campus canteen first.

The canteen was packed with students, and it served a wide range of cheap quality snacks and delicacies.

Shen Dongqing ate while walking and sighed, “I, too, want to be a college student in the future.”

When he heard this sentence, Fang Qi couldn’t help but look at him. Shen Dongqing was quite fair, with dimples when he smiled, as if he hadn’t been through society’s big dye vat.

“How old are you?” Fang Qi asked, curious.

Shen Dongqing blinked and considered it seriously: “I don’t remember, maybe a few hundred years old.”

“Pfft—”

“You are so amusing,” laughed a female student waiting for her egg waffle next to him.

Shen Dongqing cocked his head and mumbled, “I’m telling the truth,” as the girl walked away.

Following this brief interlude, the group exited the cafeteria, having eaten and drunk enough, and proceeded to the teaching block.

The teaching block was at the school’s southwest corner. According to rumors, it was once a cemetery. A fountain was built at the entrance during construction, as advised by a master, to subdue the yin energy below. It was originally supposed to have 14 levels, but because a leader at the time believed that 14 floors were unlucky, it was reduced to 13.

Fang Qi was almost halfway through popularizing science when Shen Dongqing cut him off: “Isn’t it 14 stories?”

Fang Qi: “Huh?”

“You haven’t ever counted?” questioned Shen Dongqing after taking a bite of the ice cream.

Fang Qi: “Haven’t counted…”

In general, no one would be bored enough to count the floors, right? Because this building had an elevator, it was obvious when the elevator went higher.

Fang Qi raised his head and counted after Shen Dongqing mentioned it.

“One, two, three, four…” Fang Qi counted for a while, “Twelve, thirteen, fourteen!”

He was stunned: “How can there be fourteen floors?”

Fang Qi: “Impossible.” He’d pointed to the structure with his finger while counting, and it was definitely fourteen stories tall.

Girl: “Just walk in and look at the floors. The elevator has only thirteen floor buttons.” She walked in once she finished speaking, and her slender figure vanished at the door.

Fang Qi looked at her back and scratched his head: “Go in and have a look?”

This teaching building was usually frequented by a large number of students. It is possible that there was no class today as except for the girl who had just entered, the teaching facility was deserted.

Fang Qi approached the elevator with ease and familiarity and pressed the button.

Ding—

The elevator arrived at the first floor quickly.

Fang Qi couldn’t wait to walk inside and look. There were just buttons for thirteen floors, as expected, and no fourteenth floor.

He exhaled an inexplicable sigh of relief.

“Maybe it’s simply that the elevator can’t reach the fourteenth floor,” Shen Dongqing commented as he stepped in unhurriedly, tossing the ice cream wrapper in the trash can at the door.

“How should we go there then?” Fang Qi asked.

Shen Dongqing glanced at him as if he were an idiot and said, “Walk up.”

He pressed the 13th floor button after speaking.

After everyone had entered the elevator, the door closed and the elevator slowly climbed.

Fang Qi leaned against the wall, watching the floor alter in silence. Suddenly, he caught a glimpse of their reflection in the glossy wall of the elevator and said in alarm, “Why is there an extra person!”

Click!

For some reason, the elevator abruptly stopped in mid-air, and the overhead lights also went out.

Fortunately, the folks in the elevator had all been through major storms, and this situation didn’t bother them at all. As for Fang Qi and Wu Jia, both of whom had lost their memories, were sheer terrified.

Shen Dongqing took out his phone, and the screen’s light shone out, dispelling the darkness.

“There’s an extra person?” Zhou Wenyan inquired.

Fang Qi: “Yes, yes, I just saw in the mirror that there is another person next to us.”

There was an extra team member in a confined place, in an elevator with no power.

What a classic horror movie scene. People would definitely faint in fear if a background music was introduced to the scene.

Fang Qi didn’t dare to turn his head now for fear of finding another ghost on his shoulders behind him. “What should we do now?” he questioned, his voice cracking.

“It’s not a big deal.” Shen Dondqing raised his hand, causing the light from his cell phone to shine on everyone. “Just thrash them.”

Fang Qi: “Huh?”

Shen Dongqing: “When there are so many of us, do we still need to be afraid of an extra? Everyone is trapped right now, and no one can escape. One kick from each of us and they’re screwed.”

Fang Qi was no longer terrified since he felt this argument was correct.

However, the extra individual had not yet been found when the elevator reverted to normal and continued to rise.

Shen Dongqing peered around, but he couldn’t spot the elevator’s sixth occupant. “Consider yourself lucky,” he mumbled as he put away his phone.

Ding—

The elevator came to a halt on the thirteenth floor. As soon as the door opened, Wu Jia, who was standing at the door, saw a figure flash past, which appeared to be the female student who had entered before them.

“Catch up with her and check!”

Only that female student was moving in the entire teaching building. They made a quick decision and pursued her.

The female student wasn’t walking fast and staggered forward, but for some reason, they kept a short gap and could never catch up to her.

The female student reached to a red-painted door after turning another bend and quietly opened it. The steps to the higher story were located behind it.

The female student entered without hesitation.

Fang Qi: “There really is a fourteenth floor.”

He’d been taking classes here for so long, yet this was the first time he’d heard of a fourteenth floor. He was scared and intrigued, so he eventually followed the others up the steps.

This corridor was scarcely known, and no one usually walked through it. They could only move up with the help of the weak light from their phones because there was no light.

Fang Qi was counting silently in his head as he climbed the stairs.

One, two, three… eleven, twelve, thirteen, and fourteen!

It’s unclear whether this was a coincidence, but this staircase had fourteen steps.

The final number struck Fang Qi’s heart, and he heard a giggle in the darkness. He was startled at first and then lost awareness.

Wu Jia, who was adjacent, was the first to notice something was wrong and grabbed Fang Qi, asking, “What’s wrong with you?”

Fang Qi’s strength was incredible, and he broke free from Wu Jia’s grip and strode forward.

Wu Jia yelled anxiously, “Stop him!”

Shen Dongqing tried to catch him instinctively, but Zhou Wenyan stopped him.

“There’s no rush; let’s see what he wants to do.”

The female student had vanished at some point, and the person walking in front had changed to Fang Qi. He had glassy eyes and was staring blankly ahead. He hadn’t been to the fourteenth floor before, but he didn’t pause in his steps. He quickly arrived at the entrance to the rooftop after a few turns.

The rooftop on the 14th floor was accessible by a small staircase. Today, this rooftop was highly popular. There were numerous individuals standing on the stairs, all of whom appeared to be students from the school.

Their discipline was outstanding. They didn’t fight or push each other, but instead formed a line to go to the rooftop, making no noise.

When they heard someone approaching, the students in the queue all turned their heads in unison, their faces expressionless.

The female student was among them, and Fang Qi was at the back of the line.

Shen Dongqing gazed at Fang Qi, then back at the others, then took a step and got behind Fang Qi.

“What is this for?” Wu Jia wondered.

“To go up in line,” Shen Dongqing said, raising his finger and pointing to the rooftop. “The discipline is high, so you should not cut in line.”

“Don’t you see something is wrong with them?” Wu Jia leaned forward, his voice low.

Those students’ faces were as white as paper, with no light in their eyes, which was weird and disturbing.

“Yeah, they’re all ghosts,” remarked Shen Donqing casually.

“Sososo…so many ghosts?” Wu Jia’s legs softened and he almost knelt.

Shen Dongqing: “Ghosts are civilized, so as humans, we can’t be worse!”

Wu Jia: …that seems about right.

They lined up neatly behind a group of ghosts at Shen Dongqing’s firm request, and it took a while before they entered the rooftop.

They didn’t find out what those students were up to until they got to the rooftop.

They were queuing up to jump off the building one after the other, without pausing. They simply “dropped” one by one, like dumplings falling swiftly.

The girl who had greeted them at the teaching building’s door also went straight up. Wu Jia couldn’t bear it and reached out to grab her.

It’s a shame the female student’s purpose was so clear. She pulled free without looking back and went on her way to leap off the building. Shen Dongqing took a step forward as she was about to jump over, and delivered a chop to her neck, knocking her out. The sound of that strike made one’s teeth ache.

“This one is alive,” Shen Dongqing said as he took the female student aside. It felt like he was carrying a chicken.

Then he moved through the crowd of jumpers, knocking out those he saw alive. After a moment, the ground was littered with people lying down, and there was nowhere to rest.

Those ghosts vanished once all the living individuals passed out.

Fang Qi took his time regaining consciousness, his expression befuddled.

“Are you uncomfortable anywhere?” Wu Jia inquired.

“Yes, there is…” Fang Qi cracked his neck, gasping, “My neck hurts. What happened?”

Wu Jia remained deafeningly silent.

“Nothing happened,” Shen Dongqing said with a bright smile.

Fang Qi inexplicably felt a chill run down his spine and dared not ask any more questions. “Oh, oh…” was all he could say.

Shen Dongqing strolled to the edge of the rooftop and glanced down before the other pupils awoke. Looking down from fourteen stories up, the people below were all diminished, and the wind blew furiously, making people think that it might be good to jump down.

“Jump, jump,” a faint voice said from behind, “you will be rid of worries after you jump down, you will acquire bliss, and you will gain eternal life.”

Half of Shen Dongqing’s body was leaning out, almost falling. He turned his head and saw someone who looked precisely like him squatting next to him, but his appearance was full of evil influence, so familiar people could readily tell the difference.

“Jump?” the man asked.

Shen Dongqing: “I think that’s a good idea.”

“So?” the person chuckled.

Shen Dongqing asked seriously: “So why don’t you jump since you have such a good idea?”

That person was not at all confused by Shen Dongqing’s logic: “How do you know I didn’t jump?”

Shen Dongqing: “I didn’t see it; you do it now.”

That person cocked his head like Shen Dongqing: “Then I jump, and you jump too.”

Shen Dongqing glanced at him and said very slowly, “Sounds good.”
