A Decent into Hell

December 7 6AE (military calendar)
December 7 2028 AC (global calendar)

Major Griffin
Archangel company

In Route to Moscow

I'm strapped in a crash seat in a huge aircraft with part of my new company. The rest of them are In one of the other few dozen aircraft flying with us. The entire battalion is now close to a regiment in size though for some reason not classified as one, is on these aircraft.

We are currently thirty miles above the ground going mach three. I lean over to Jed who’s sitting next to me “Ready to make history” he nods going over his equipment for the Nth time. I Radio Willy who’s in charge of the company vehicle platoon. “How many vehicle drop cradles do you think will get shot down” I ask.

“Hopefully none I may or may not have stowed away inside my tank” I smile inside my helmet “How about a bet then on whether or not you get reprimanded for this or influence doctrine” he gives a short barking laugh before he responds “I’ll take you up on that just make sure you survive so I can collect my winnings” I end the conversation by sending him a emote of a rude gesture which he returns.

A voice comes over the all-com and bulkhead speakers “Five minutes from drop point prepare to drop” I feel the aircraft slow down knowing it’ll drop to just below the speed of sound for us to jump. I get out of my crash seat and everyone follows suit. I’m at the back of the line to be last out.

Lead by example, I’d like to be the first out but it’s better to make sure all my men get out without problems. The cargo bay quickly becomes cramped as dozens of soldiers stand up each carrying their standard load out plus a parachute strapped to their front.

Attaching it to the front allows us to shoot if we need to on the way down and makes for a softer landing with our armor. Jed is checking his again so I pull him around and check it myself “You're fine just make sure you deploy it when your visor tells you to” he seems to gain some confidence finally.

The rear doors open up and the wind howls through “Thirty seconds to drop” The guys closest to the door brace themselves, I know Rabbit is up there somewhere so he’ll be the first down and in combat.

“Drop drop drop” the com bellows and the same message flashes on everyone’s visor. A steady stream of heavy armored violence falls from the back of dozens of aircraft joined by dozens of heavy drop cradles holding vehicles.

I pause for a second to check everyone got out before I gracefully dive out being mindful of my breathing as I’m fully on internal air for now. I glance around as everyone has assumed a dive poster rather than a splayed to increase their decent speed.

Due to sheer mass, the drop cradles keep up with our race into hell.

A short while later we all roll backwards into basically a sitting position and pull our chutes. The only problem when mine deployed it ripped itself free of my armor throwing me into a tumble as I pick up speed again.

Someone calls over coms “Someone’s chute failed” another replies “It’s major griffins” I steady my breathing and splay myself out to regain control. Once I do Tanya radios over to me on a private com “Remember beachhead and how I dropped into the president's mansion do the same unless you’d rather paint the ground”

I think back to how she used her mobility assistance thrusters to make the landing bearable and thank my luck that I now have the jump jets to help slow me.

I don’t get the chance to slow myself much as flak rips through the air and I have to dive again to not get shredded. Several missiles shriek down and impact the flak positions as I make ready to land going only 200 miles per hour.

I kick my feet out beneath me and hit both sets of thrusters to the max making my stomach lurch. I watch as I run dry on fuel fifty feet up still going 80 miles per hour. Luckily I had some angular momentum and tucked into a roll as I hit the ground, sending me through a wall of a nearby building stopping halfway through an interior wall with some crunching.

My vision blurs from an obvious concussion and I just lay there half in the wall for a second. I then gather myself and groan as I switch my air back to external filtered then with an even bigger groan I begin to pull myself out of the wall. without success.

Gunfire erupts outside and I vaguely hear shouting “he’s in here cover me” I see the distinct shape of Barbosa come in through the door as I continue to flail around. “Holy shit you're still alive” he states. I stop and just try to look at him “Why wouldn’t I be now help me out of here”

Several others flow into the building and seem to go secure it after a glance at me “Major you're flatlined on the medical monitor we all thought you were paste… how’s your radio” I try it but I get nothing even static “completely dead… give me something for a major concussion I can barely see”

That pushes Barbosa into motion as he quickly administers several medications “that should stop any swelling of your brain and clear out the worst of the effects. You should be decent once we free you”

I just sit tight as he breaks apart the wall and tries to pull me out “Seems you're still caught on something let me check the other side” he then turns to yell “Wraith pull door security I need to move in”

He moves off once wraith returns and after a minute I hear Barbosa “fuck that’s not pretty… your feet went through… something give me a moment” My concussion must be clearing up nicely because I faintly hear some squishing and a few hard snaps “alright try to pull yourself out now” I pull and with a lot more ease get out of the wall. The sight of blood and gore covering my legs is not lost on me.

“Group up at me I need a quick and dirty report” Barbosa and the other soldier I didn’t catch who it was just yet meet up with me and wraith. “It wasn’t the cleanest drop that flak through us for a loop but no one has been reported as dead on drop we already called in your status. The rest of the command squad is a few blocks away rabbit Jed. They are pinned but Snorble's in route”

I nod “Then let’s regroup I’ll have Jed get me a theater report once we clear the immediate area there”

After a peek out the door, we leave the house and make our way to Rabbit and Jed. We encounter a few scattered armed groups that open fire on us but we quickly take them out. Something doesn’t feel right though.

Within half an hour of landing on the ground, the command squad has finally grouped up along with Snorble's platoon. “How’s the rest of the battalion Jed” snorbles having his grunts pull security while we have a quick theater update. Jed is crouched down on the specialized radio pack “The rest of the drop went off perfectly and everyone else was grouped up and heading for their objectives within five minutes of hitting the ground we're the last ones to be ready” I frown and look at our objective.

-infiltrate suspected arms research facilities-

“We’ll us being late won’t hinder the overall invasion but time is of the essence” I try to tag locations but my map is dead as well. “Snorble you're linked to us for the duration half my helmet functions are dead so you need to mark locations. We could use the extra manpower to search these buildings anyway”

I pull out the card with the building locations in it from my helmet and hand it to Snorble. A few seconds later I assume he marks the closest because Jed comments on how it’s not far.

….
Off in the distance, I can hear heavy fighting but on the way to our objective resistance has been light. Now outside the building, it looks unassuming, nothing tells it apart from neighboring buildings.

Snorble meets up with me “I want a few sentries posted outside preferably across the street while the rest of us enter and search the building” he nods and passes on the orders “Wraith stay topside with them”

After a minute we kick in the door and flow into clearing with practiced ease. The inside just looks like an ordinary shop, nothing that would say weapons research.

It doesn’t take that long to search everything and find nothing. I’m about to have Jed relay that we are done here when the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. I whip around rifle raised in one hand while the other shoved Jed away. The air cracks and pops smelling of burning ozone as what can only be a ball of plasma passes through where Jed just was.

I put a few rounds in the guy who popped out of a secret floor hatch killing him before he could close the hatch. “Everyone inside the building rally on me” I call out. Then slowly back up to where Jed is on the floor and help him up.

“Thanks that was close” We both glance at the burning hole in the wall where the projectile impacted. “Like I said kid stay close to me and you’ll be fine. Grab that gun for safe keeping I’ll watch the hatch while everyone gathers”

It takes a few minutes for everyone to gather and everyone notices the burning hole. “Jed pass along our status and what we’ve found so far be sure to include the possibility that we’ll lose radio contact”

He nods and after a few moments and a few nods presumably to whoever he’s talking to, then he refocuses on me “Major the general says to wait for a bear before we enter the facility”

I’m lucky my helmet hides my face so I can not openly look shocked “Well I guess we can wait a few more minutes for bear” When did he get here? Did he drop with us? I’ll have to ask him later when he gets here.

I head outside with Jed close behind me. A few minutes later a dropship flies overhead skimming the tops of buildings slow enough that bear jumps out the back cratering the ground. He steps out of the small crater and approaches me.

Over external speakers I speak with him “Fancy armor you have there must be the sentinel special” his helmet is a wedge shape with no visor it’s all armor. He has a huge backpack linked to a tri-barrel rotary gun. No shoulder weapons but the armor plates are thick and I have a feeling more durable than ours.

He shrugs holding his gun like it’s nothing, his armor is definitely fully powered “What this old thing? I’m more impressed by your entry major” I ignore the urge to glance at my blood-caked legs. “Let’s head inside, I have no coms so everything will have to go through Jed also they seem to have some kind of plasma weapon it’s unknown if it’s a prototype or not”

Bear nods and then gestures to the building “Let’s start the party then. You take command it’s your op” I nod and we head back inside to the secret hatch. Bear doesn’t miss the smoking crater in the wall.

Before we head down we all check our ammo and weapons. Then everyone gives me a little fuel for my thrusters so we’re all a little low now. Unfortunately, we don’t have a spare comm unit to replace mine. Bear took a look but it’s actually bent from hitting something.

Satisfied we’re all ready we open the hatch and after a glance to gauge the height I figure it’s a safe free fall distance so we all jump down and roll out of the way securing the bottom.

The tunnel is short and a blast door blocks the way about 50 feet from the ladder. I wave bear and rabbit over to me to examine the door for a moment “What are your thoughts on this” I ask.

After a close look and tapping on it I get two fairly different answers the first from rabbit is “I can cut through it but the motors will be a problem and cutting the whole door will leave us open for too long”

Bear's answer gives me my plan “If we can cut through it some heavy’s could force it open I believe it’ll be faster than cutting off the door” I nod then reply “Rabbit cut the locking bolts bear grab a few heavy’s and brace I want it open the second the bolts are cut”

I then raise my voice for the rest to hear “I want ballistic shields to the front and a gun line behind. Shoot anything that’s a threat when the doors open”

I turn around to look at the door. Rabbit is about halfway down the door and brick and another heavy are holding tight to the left side of the door while Bear has one hand on the forward grip of his gun with the other on the door. For a second I doubt he could open that side by himself but he did toss me like a doll in armor so it should be fine.

I grab the back of Rabbit's neck guard at a specifically made handle. As per doctrine, I’ll pull him to the side once he’s done cutting so he’s not sat in the middle of a kill zone. A few moments later he gives me a nod and I pull him to the side while the doors are indeed pulled open with no small amount of screaming metal and protesting motors.

Bullets fill the now open space impacting the shields and half a second later my men return fire. The hostile gunfire doesn’t let up. I get rabbit back up to his feet “They must be behind cover” I say only slightly raising my voice. I know everyone only slightly hears the gunfire.

I move up to the side of the door and take a peak. Cloth uniforms and what looks like personal defense weapons. I pull my head back. Then look at Brick “Relay for me Jed’s behind the wall. Phalanx formation heavy’s up front” he nods.

A moment later our lines shift and bear and the rest of the heavy’s roll around the door frame barrels spilling. Bears takes me by surprise. I was expecting something like our heavy guns but his monster let’s loose a roar and tears through any cover the defenders had often ripping them in half or blowing off an arm. All the while he’s just calmly walking forward swaying his gun side to side ignoring the small arms fire bouncing off his armor and helmet.

I should request full armored helmets. The advantage should outweigh the drawback of no backup way to see outside.

In a few minutes, we clear out the blockade and push further. I leave two men behind to do a search and then regroup with us.

The next hour is met with no resistance but lots of rooms so I cycle through men having them drop behind to clear and search for anything interesting as the main force pushes deeper.

It’s at the hour-twenty mark that we encounter resistance again. This time shitty robots. Tracks a main body and gun arms with a sensor head. Everyone rolls to the sides of the open hallway to get behind pillars. As I roll behind cover I toss a flash grenade. Right before it goes off I see Bear in the middle of the hallway spinning up his gun.

The bang of the grenade is seamlessly followed by the roar of Bears gun and the sound of bullets impacting his armor. I gesture to Brick to direct fire his shoulder launcher then peak around my cover. I hear a dim thwup then watch the impact and explosion.

My visor tries to apply a filter to let me see through the smoke but it seems to be having issues. I hit the side of my helmet and it clears up. I watch a dozen more robots roll into the hall. “Leapfrog down the hall all weapons free” I yell above the increasing gunfire.

We get stuck in a firefight for the next hour. At first, the robots just had regular guns and as long as we were careful they weren’t too big of a problem, still taking time to deal with. Then they started mixing in robots carrying plasma weapons.

One of the first shots from them took someone’s head clean off cauterizing the stump. Obviously, this slowed us down further. Luckily the plasma weapons seem to have a slow fire rate and the projectiles are noticeably slower than a bullet.

Under heavy fire, I lead the push bullets and plasma both skimming my armor. Bear just walked down the hallway never letting off the trigger. I never thought about it at the time but he fired nonstop for hours, somehow.

We reach a central hub eventually and I realize this facility spans the entire city as we are at the Kremlin. We clear the immediate area and get ourselves ready to capture it. time for a decapitating strike, we have the research facility handled.
