Vehicles and the Start of a War
Griffin and his squad have regrouped outside the shoot house and have several medics checking them over. I’m the only one half out of my armor the other guys are just getting checked for concussions and other minor injuries that happen in the shoot house. I’m meanwhile having my arms checked while Tanya walks up unfortunately a wolfish grin is on her face. “You all get the rest of the week off you helped me win a bet congratulations”
“Does that have to do with that scenario being rigged” I ask “Spot on, though that just makes victory all the sweeter you should all be very proud now enjoy your week off and rest up” just as quickly as she arrived she leaves. The medic next to me says something but I’m not paying attention, that is until he pulls out my arm from the socket then rotates it before pushing it back in “Ah fuck a little warning next time” I say as I glair at him “I did but I guess you weren’t listening” then the smart ass does the same to my other arm.
The medics get up to leave “You all check out, griffin take it extra easy for a few weeks'' once they all leave it’s just my squad and Bailils squad who calls over to us “I can’t believe you threw Bear I’d say you definitely deserve your win” he says "it was definitely an interesting scenario next time we’ll defend though to spice it up” after a short laugh he replies “I’ll just put us all in SPAG armor it’ll be easy” i quicklt reply “yeah easy for us… I’ll talk to Tanya later for a rematch then”
Meanwhile with the reporters
“I’m sure most of you are familiar with the vehicles here but we’ll go over them and some overviews of recent changes you all know the policy on active equipment so I won’t restate it” I walk in front of a four-wheeled vehicle with a flatbed. “This is our all-terrain fast reconnaissance vehicle it’s bed is modular to carry supplies or have a mounted rotary HMG the only change from when you all were in service is improvements to the wheels and traction systems each wheel can individually adjust traction now and it’s more fuel efficient though there is a long-range model or rather prototype that will run off of a few RTGs”
heads nod but no questions everyone is familiar with this vehicle. I continue going over the vehicles in the bay including the tank a four-tracked monster that can move without any tracks and with two sets of tracks powered. This model, though I don’t tell the reporters this, can be crewed by three men a driver, gunner, and commander/spotter. In theory, it can run off of one because the gunner's helmet is linked to the main cannon so it tracks his head, so a driver could do both jobs if they wanted.
Then there is the artillery, all of which is self-propelled. There is a prototype in the world to replace this model that’s on tracks but it’s still a long way out. The next self-propelled cannon is the jager it’s an anti-tank cannon, it’s unique in its main armament is a downsized version of our battleship cannons the CMAC (chemical magnetically assisted cannon) the jager can penetrate a blue water ship’s armor.
The main drawback of this vehicle is it has a combustion engine as well as a reactor. While most other pieces of equipment that need power like SPAG armor just use an RTG this needs the real deal. So there is a risk of it detonating if it’s shot in the reactor. On that note The next vehicle is classified as an infantry fighting vehicle it can be set to follow the squad leader so the driver is not needed.
Next, we move to air vehicles all of which are VTOL. There are the gunships that almost look like an Apache but without the rotors instead, it has three sets of thrusters two on the side and one on the tail, the side-mounted thrusters can tilt in basically any direction so they’re incredibly maneuverable and fast.
Then there is the heavy lift platform that has four thrusters placed at each corner, a large bay that most vehicles can fit into, or a large amount of infantry. To finish it off it has cable hard points to under sling a tank or other large objects. The last infantry-related air vehicle is a somewhat universal vehicle as it can carry a full squad to a location fast it has a few hard points for weapons and a 20mm autocannon on a ball mount. The next air vehicle is way more sleak as one is an air superiority fighter that can hit Mach 4 though at those speeds it has to use missiles and they are dropped and then ignited to not hit the jet. The last vehicle is a bomber. It's very similar to the fighter but about 5x as big with a gargantuan payload.
It’s been several days and the news conferences are finally over, I know I’m the one that planned them all but it’s still exhausting. After we showcased the ground and air forces we showed the navy and to no one’s surprise the two battleships caught everyone’s attention. We opened the gates for them to leave the dock and they officially set sail. It was after the news conference that I was informed that a US fleet was heading in this direction and we only detected it due to the ships now being at sea.
We need our satellites immediately, this can’t happen again. With all of this out of the way though I’m on my way to Africa to begin talks for them to join us peacefully. I’m certain that I’ll see other major foreign actors while I’m there but I’m not worried for one I’ll have siff with me the captain of the sentinels and two squads of soldiers as protection. They have their standard armor with them but unless someone kicks off a war they are in something that resembles American armor.
To not appear too threatening we are just taking a single frigate the UER-Dauntless it’s of the spammer class of frigate it has two point defense guns(30 mm rotary) and a bow-mounted single barrel 100mm universal cannon plus 36 missile launcher tubes and plenty of reserve missiles hence the class name. While I simply wait for the ship to arrive I’m leaning against the bow railing watching the sea.
The UER-Dauntless has docked in South Africa and it was a good thing we came here in a warship as I doubt they would have let us dock otherwise. Regardless we unload a few of our recon vehicles two of which have a HMG while the rest are set up for transport. We mount up and beeline for the president’s office. It doesn’t take all that long to arrive but getting in takes some convincing.
Eventually, the president comes out to see what’s going on and after an explanation, we are led into his office, me and Siff the rest are left with the vehicles. “Thank you for agreeing to talk to us despite our abrupt visit,” I say as he gestures for us to sit. His voice is a deep rumble as he responds “My curiosity has been piqued, you said you have a trade proposal” I smile as I respond “Of a sort, we intend to expand our territory but I’d like to try peaceful methods first you are the first I have come to in this regard”
his expression darkens for his response “your territory just who are you all” siff answers for me “he is the lord of the Elysium Republic, lord Spero” the man looks confused “the Elysium Republic I’ve never heard of such a thing I bet that ship of yours is the only one you have” he starts laughing but I simply smile “so are you not even going to listen to what I have to say” he laughs more “that’s right boy why would I bow to you”
“it seems doing this peaceful is no longer an option so we’ll take our leave you better prepare for an invasion” I stand up to leave and walk out the door. I climb back into the passenger seat of my vehicle the soldier who’s driving speaks up “Did the talks go well” I shake my head and speak to the lieutenant of these squads “You are free to engage any hostels as we return to the dauntless let them know of this status and make ready to leave try to not harm civilians if engaged but they are acceptable” with that we drive away back to the docks.
To my surprise, we all load back onto the ship without incident so I head for the bridge. “Captain set sail on your command and meet me in the battle bridge I’d like you to be involved in this meeting” he briskly replies “Yes sir” I step out of the show bridge and head down to the battle bridge and begin by having the main admirals, generals and branch officers tune into this meeting.
By the time they are all listing the caption join us and the ship is moving. “Talks were not an option this time so the invasion is authorized to begin by dropping notices in the cities then the next day begin operations before we finalize the plans I want input” the captain-general of the army, Francis Gerhardt speaks up “I believe it would save time if we all agree on acceptable damage and losses both to our forces and those we will be capturing” I see every head nod before he continues “I propose as to set a precedent no losses on our side while we decimate the South African military’s manpower and facilities”
the other captain generals and their subordinates are murmuring to one another and I catch some doubts from them. I’m glad they are realistic but they have yet to be in a real war too so they are also worried. “I’m happy to see you all not acting rash I have high hopes in this campaign” Then I hear someone clear their voice and a few generals go slightly pale when they realize who’s talking now. “Brigadier General Tanya Rex you have the floor” I say and I can hear her smile through the speakers
“I believe we can win this war in one battle if we deploy a single battalion to draw in their entire military then the rest of ours can swoop in and wipe them out meanwhile a squad can capture the president so he can sign the treaty making this all legal and official” Air Marshal of the air force Merten Fortuna raises his voice over the ensuing shouting match “how do you propose that a single battalion draw in their entire army”
“we fully equip them of course so they throw everything at them in a hope to stop their advance” I lean over to Siff “what are your thoughts” she whispers back “it’ll probably work they might not even need reinforcing honestly, there’s a reason pirates and warlords are so prevalent”
I smile then clap my hands to gather their attention “Tanya since it’s your plan your battalion will be the bait after all yours is the best equipped for the task” her reply is full of malice though not directed at me “on one condition one of my squads captures that pig as well”
“I don’t see why not. It’s decided then the 104th will land and a select squad will make a stealth entry with the help of the Dauntless as of now Tanya is leading operation Beachhead so I’ll leave the rest to you all” Before I leave I hear Tanya say “thank you my lord Spero” dripping in malice as she gets ready to wage war. No that’s not quite right with her in charge it’ll be closer to a slaughterhouse there’s a reason she’s leading an independent battalion and not a branch after all.
