78 – The Fallen Receptionist Pilitza

(Sigh… What a hassle.)
Pilitza let out a sigh as she brushed back her loosely waved bright orange hair.

The cursed girl named Emmy, with whom she had a little dispute earlier, was no longer in the guild.

Emmy had gone to complete the “task” that Pilitza had given her to become an adventurer.
That “task” was the collection of medicinal herbs.

Medicinal herb collection was a fundamental task for adventurers, comparable to monster hunting. Without being able to do this, one wouldn’t be recognized as an adventurer.

With these thoughts in mind, Pilitza had successfully managed to temporarily expel Emmy from the guild.
(Why do I have to bother with such a filthy cursed child? What a hassle.)
The reason Pilitza adamantly refused to register Emmy as an adventurer was that she didn’t want to get involved with cursed individuals.

And because it was a hassle.

Firstly, the paperwork involved in registering new adventurers was a hassle.

Next, preparing various lectures for new adventurers was also a hassle.

Above all, guild staff had supervisory responsibilities for new adventurers.

If a rookie caused any trouble or died immediately, guild staff could even face penalties.

Considering all this, it was just too much of a hassle.

Why did she have to go through all this trouble for a cursed child?
(Kamasse, was it? That brat… I wish he had just killed that cursed child right there. Useless…)
Pilitza sighed once again and muttered under her breath about the young magic swordsman who had followed Emmy unsteadily outside.

Just a cursed child died, no one would care about that anyway.

If they cleaned up quickly and neatly, even the guards wouldn’t complain.

That’s just how this world worked.
(What “combat power equivalent to Class 2”? Stupid father. He got beaten by such a small cursed child. Pathetic.)
The assessment that Kamasse had “combat power equivalent to Class 2” came from Director Dakkante, who was currently on a business trip.

Pilitza herself had no combat power as a born-and-raised guild staff member, and she didn’t understand much about fighting.

Furthermore, she hadn’t been paying serious attention to the battle between Emmy and Kamasse just now.

She had thought there was no way the cursed child could fight properly, and while her attention was briefly diverted by some document, Kamasse had been defeated. She hadn’t seen just how abnormal Emmy’s behavior was.

She was indeed surprised and shocked by the result, but that was because Kamasse, who had been considered strong, had been defeated, not because Emmy had been strong.

In Pilitza’s mind, the conclusion was not “Emmy was strong enough to defeat Kamasse” but rather “Kamasse was not strong enough to be defeated by Emmy.”

If she had asked other adventurers in the guild, she might have realized the precariousness of this conclusion, but Pilitza didn’t want to bother with such hassle.
(Sigh… Seriously, what? What’s the deal? Why do I, this I, have to deal with this kind of cursed child in this backwater branch?)
Pilitza sighed once more, lamenting her situation.
Originally, she wasn’t a staff member at this Yoshanka outpost.

Her previous workplace had been a branch of the adventurer’s guild located in the capital city of Tenidis.

The glamorous capital.

The city was filled with stylish cafes, restaurants, and clothing stores, making every day enjoyable.

It was completely different from this rural city on top of a cliff with its constant sea breeze.

There was a glittering and glamorous life in the capital.
In the past, Pilitza had a young and cute face, and she could compete as one of the most popular receptionists in the capital city.

There were many adventurers who tried to woo her.

Many adventurers also showered her with gifts.

There were even adventurers who proposed marriage and whispered words of love to her.
And Pilitza became conceited.
Her work attitude gradually deteriorated, and she started treating adventurers differently.

She would go out of her way to help higher-ranked adventurers or those who gifted her or those with a fine look. She would also recommend better quests, and even offer higher prices for materials.

On the other hand, she treated adventurers she didn’t like in a rough manner.
Another issue was that she got suspected doing bribery.

Not really suspected when she really did it.

She was allocating more “contribution points,” which were necessary for grade promotions, to adventurers who gave her gifts.

… Actually, she did various other things too, but that’s beside the point.
In any case, her actions were discovered by the higher-ups of the guild.
She managed to avoid getting fired by using money and her charm, but she was transferred as a punishment to the Yoshanka branch. It was a demotion.

Labeling the assignment to Yoshanka as a punishment was quite disrespectful to the residents of Yoshanka, but it was a decision made by the higher-ups who believed it would be a fitting punishment for her, considering her attachment to the city life.
Pilitza’s age was now in her mid-thirties.

Her sweet appearance still remained, but her skin wasn’t as firm as before. She felt the passage of time and she was anxious.

By now, she should have married a well-earning high-ranking adventurer and built a happy family. What had gone wrong?

Perhaps she had been too picky…
Regretting such things and completely ignoring her work attitude, Pilitza continued to sigh.

◇ ◇ ◇

Now then, let’s return to the story.

Pilitza assigned Emmy a “task” of gathering herbs.

Naturally, a receptionist had no authority to assign such a “task,” and, in the first place, there was no need for “tests” or “tasks” to register as an adventurer. However, let’s put that aside for now.

Pilitza had no faith whatsoever that Emmy could complete this “task.”
“Gathering herbs is a fundamental duty for adventurers, as significant as monster hunting.”
The words Pilitza had shared with Emmy were indeed true.

However, a single term, “herbs,” encompassed various categories.

Some herbs were as simple as pocket change for low-level adventurers, while others required high-ranking adventurers to risk their lives for collection.

Pilitza’s “task” for Emmy fell into the latter category.
The “task” was to gather a type of herb called “Saiishu Grass.”
Saiishu Grass was a vital ingredient for high-grade potions and was known to grow in the Kaise Forest, located to the south of Yoshanka.

And, this forest was a dangerous region, referred to as a ‘demon’s domain’.

A demon’s domain essentially referred to a territory dominated by monsters, unreachable by human hands.

The Kaise Forest was as famous a demon’s domain as the sacred Mount Zahanu, and in terms of sheer size, it rivaled small nations.

While the forest’s outer regions were less perilous, its heart was an uncharted land ruled by dangerous beasts.

Its danger far exceeded that of Zahanu.
Instructing a child aspiring to be an adventurer to go gather herbs there usually meant to say, ‘Go and die.’

However, since Emmy was the cursed child and no one would make an issue of it. Coupled with the fact that Emmy wasn’t yet an adventurer, Pilitza faced no penalties for her actions.

Emmy, having received the “task,” fell silent for a while, pondering. After she extracted the information from Pilitza that Saiishu Grass grew in the Kaise Forest, she wrapped her hair in a cloth, covering her head, and left the branch office (it’s worth noting that Emmy’s exposing her black hair within the branch office was due to Pilitza having noticed a strand of black hair falling from the cloth on her head, which she forcibly removed).

By now, that cursed child was likely at her wit’s end.

A cursed child growing up in an environment where she could receive education was practically inconceivable.

As such, there was no way she would understand the nature of Saiishu Grass.

Surely, she thought that she could simply gather random plants in the Kaise Forest and call it done.

If she went inside the demon’s domain without any preparation, she would unquestionably getting killed by monsters.

With that, the handling of the unpleasant cursed child had concluded.

Pilitza concluded this, returning her attention to the paperwork on her desk and releasing a yawn.
The strong sea breeze, whistling as always, hit the windows of the branch office.

Author Note:

The reason I chose “Saiishu Grass” for the herb is not really that it’s for “gathering.”

Often, I spontaneously decide on these unique terms as I write.

Curiously, when I revisit them later, they often turn into puns.

Funny how that works.
Of course, Kamasse’s name is derived from “kamase”.

There are naming patterns like that as well.

An extreme example would be the Duke’s daughter, Izywar Deswah
◇ ◇ ◇
Translator Note:

Author admitted the punny name.

So about the grass, the original name was サイーシュ (Saiishu). A pun from 採取 (Saishu) which means picking/collecting/gathering/harvesting.

Then Kamasse (カマッセ)… I am not really sure what ‘Kamase (かませ)’ the author means. But I think it was ‘to concede’. [Here is a link if you want to learn more](https://jisho.org/search/kamase)

Anyway it doesn’t matter that much, his name is Kamasse.
