Ch. 30

“Defiance”

I know she has killed many creatures, people, and everything else. She is able to turn into anything that has met death by her hands while their blood runs past her fingertips. I should have turned into a damn Balaur or something.

Her head tilts and faint chirps, calls come from her. She’s communicating. In a way that only other wampus cats would understand.

“Showing off?” A growl grows within her. Her paws tense, and her claws dig into the earth below.

“Could ask you the same thing.” My tail moving from side to side, increasing the movement. The shadow long gone. I haven’t seen her shift in so long. Knives and swords are usually her weapon of choice.

“I haven’t figured out yet what is going on with you, but I will… we will.” Her eyes tracking my tail. “But the real question I have is what is going on with you two…” She cocks her head to the side, purely animal, her gray eyes narrowing at me now, and she arches her back.

“Absolutely nothing.” With us that is. Me on the other hand, who knows at this point. I am just as confused as the next person.

“Hmm…You are hiding it horribly.” Her mouth moves past her fangs. “You do not speak words, but you are communicating. You have always had a hard time hiding your emotions from your face.” I am not even surprised she noticed. I wonder if she saw the shadow or if it was just my silly face that showed everything. She is the one who taught me to detect, to see, everything, so of course she would also do those exact same things.

I snarl, “I cannot hide when I am annoyed.”

Her eyes flicker. “Oh, there is that tension I was talking about.”

I snarl.

“Mihaela you can dismiss it all you want, but it will only grow…before it eats you alive. I have seen it before…” Her eyes narrow and her body goes still. “How about I distract you with something else, at least for a little awhile.” She pounces. She gets the upper hand and pins me to the ground. A growl and shriek leave me, and my body hits the ground under her.

“Mihaela. I am ashamed. You were only gone a little less than two weeks…” Two weeks. Fucking hell. “We have much to practice when we get back.” She chirps so close to my ear that the heat ignites the fire within me. I latch on to her tail as it moves past my face. She snarls but backs away. “Always fighting dirty, but smarter.” She smiles, which looks even more terrifying as a wampus cat. “Maybe we don’t have as much to practice as I thought.” She twist her body, causing every inch to shake from the tip of her ears down to her tail. “I know you saw the guard posts. So, you know we are close to the castle.” Her eyes narrow. “Do you want to see which curious cat can make it home first?”

My body shivers at the word home or maybe at the obvious challenge she has placed in front of me knowing that I can’t and won’t refuse. It is becoming clear that my competitive nature has me out here racing my friends and chasing shadows. My smile matches hers.

“Bet.”
