Ch. 36

“Pint”

I pause and look toward where Zanir hurried off to. He has passed three or four rows of bookshelves now. I can’t see him, but I do notice a dark spot along the marble that is moving back and forth, aggressively…like a shadow.

“Which part?” I say with a sigh. So much has happened in the last few days. Few weeks.

“I mean, all of it, of course, but let’s start with the most exciting part.” She starts applying the dry power she mixed on my ankle and then dropping a clear liquid on top of it.

“Which is?” I know what she is implying, but I am not an open book. And she knows that.

“Hmm, I don’t know. The tall dark-haired man with blue eyes like the raging sea with flames dancing in them, who literally just stomped away after seeing you…hurt…” She rubs the mixture around my ankle. The blues and deep purples begin to fade much like the sky outside the enormous windows. My face scowls from the pressure.

“Ah, yeah, that part…” I lead back into the chair. My head falling off the back and my hair falls past the edge. I haven’t had a chance to braid it, and fuck putting it up now. I can’t wait to wash it. Nyx, I need a bath. “Well his name is Zanir. He is a three hundred old vampire who controls shadows, and who knows what else, but he is now a mortal vampire man, who’s powers I took after he talked about eating me like a snack while in bat form in the endless forest by myself...at night.” I don’t raise my head but look toward Oana. Her hands are moving across my ankle still, but her mouth is wide open. “We made a deal that Mother may give him his powers back if he gave us information. Even though I accidently gave him some of his powers back already. A single shadow, I have noticed so far.” I sigh. “Not to mention that while we were in the forest, I fought a Samca, a Balaur and that shithead bit me…”

“What?” Her eyes widen even further than before. “A three headed water dragon bit you, and you’re in one piece? Or is Galilea getting better at attaching limps?”

I chuckle as I show her my other shoulder. My poor body has been through the hell lately.  A row of white scars now line my shoulder blade. “I fought it as a Balaur myself. Thanks to the knowledge in here.” I move my eyes around the library. Almost identical to the grand library that filled my mind while a sleeping potion and sedative ran through my system. My eyes land on a part of marble flooring past bookshelves where the boys went. The floor is usually a milky white, but it is dark now, and growing. I quickly move my attention back to Oana as she now is holding my ankle in both of her hands. I wince, but continue, “It got a good bite out of me, so I bit off two of its heads.”

Oana scuffed louder than I appreciated. Her hands moving along my ankle, each touch sends a wave up my leg. “I’m not surprised. Now back to the main part, you know the good part.” Her eyes flick to me and a sly smile moves across her lips.

“After Devlyn, Sadar, Iamys, the scouts and guards, found us we traveled to Faymore.”

“A trip to the Tavern I’m guessing?” Oana’s smile is growing. “Take anyone back to the Inn for the night?”

I scoff. “Not in the way you are thinking.” I shift my shoulders trying to think about something other than the pain radiating from my ankle. I dull pain runs down my arm. Ward burns will do the trick. “We held hands….”

Oana nearly drops my ankle and her mouth drop open.

“The busty blonde barmaid was at the Tavern in Faymore, and I didn’t want to get throw out, so don’t get your knickers in a bunch.” I don’t raise my head but shot her a look.

She simply lets out a single chuckle and starts wrapping one sleeve around the back of my heel.

“Like I was saying, we held hands…and then we become connected.”

“How so?” Oana pulls the sleeve around my ankle and each movement has me grinding my teeth.

“I mean like, telepathy…talking to each other in our minds. My cold battling against his warmth…Being able to spot each other is that makes sense…Honestly it is all very strange. It is different than any of my powers unless it is something new.”

Oana’s face goes blank, and her fingers freeze for a moment.

“Zeva has been requesting information on the fae lands and their history.”

“And…” I sit back up in the chair. Searching for her eyes. “What does this have to do with anything?”

“I did a little research of my own. I think we have some things to discuss.” She starts back to the sleeve wrap, making sure the ankle is stable within it. “After dinner…and a long bath meet me back here…alone…”

Finally her eyes move back to meet mine. An icy blue tundra fills them, snowflakes rim around her cat like pupils. Her face is still unreadable which is not like her. We have been friends for years, sisters even. We hold this stare for a moment before I hear shuffling toward the arch entranceway of the grand library.

I see a tall, large blue skinned high fae woman walk through the archway, Farrah, and Chalia following close behind her.

Oana quickly stands and waves her hand over the table and mumbles something under her breath. The world becomes louder, as loud as a grand library can as the night falls around outside. Everything on the table disappears without a trace. Two mugs now grace the table and two books. The smell of ale filling the air. Nyx, I need a drink. Oana motions to my ankle. I shove it back into my boot, not even bothering with the sock that I kick under the chair. I glance around before grabbing the mug. Iamys is nowhere to be seen, but a new blonde colored chair has emerges at the edge of the large bay windows. I can’t spot Zanir but see at the end of one row of bookshelves seems to be dark in the torch lite room. Like it is casted in a shadow.

I move the mug to my mouth and a rush of fruity, fiery, and intense hoppy bitterness run down my throat. Some liquid courage, or giggles with my track record.

“What are you two doing?” Farrah is over to us in a few strides. Chalia sprinting to keep with her. I am chugging the ale. Nyx, I needed this.

“Catching up. I am telling her about the book I have been reading. It is about a handsome man who sweeps a menacing woman off her feet, and how every touch has the woman carving more, more of his warmth. Plus, we are just enjoying this month’s autumn ale. It is superb.” Oana says with a small grin on her face.

This witch.

I tilt the mug further and finish each drop. Nyx, I need about nine more of these.

“Farrah, what do we owe the pleasure? Want to join our book club? There are some peppery parts you may like in this book.” My eyes flick to Oana who’s eyes are wide like a new babe doe. I roll my eyes and bring my attention back to Farrah. “May add a little red to your blue.”

Farrah’s face turns hard. Her blue skin lighting a few shades. I hit a nerve. Typical, ha.

“Dinner will be served within the hour. Queen Zeva commanded you to clean up beforehand. Chalia is to take you back to your wing of the castle.”

“I know where it is. I probably have had a few concussions recently, but I haven’t forgotten the place I have spent most of my life.”

“You are known to get sidetracked… you could say.” Farrah eyes flick to Oana who takes a sip…well chugs her ale with a choke. That’s my girl. “Where is your male guest?”

“He is with Iamys. He tends to like the boys more than me, anyway.” I stand and gently put my ankle down. The wrap stabilizing it. Pain is dull and numbing, but bearable.

Depends on which one we are talking about, but I prefer Sadar.

I’m not surprised. I like my men taller than me, too.

Warmth fills my mind, my skull, my core. Shit.

I move between the chair and stool, my back to Farrah for a few seconds. I meet Oana icy eyes. I motion behind me with my eyes. She nods knowing what I am asking. Watching the mortal vampire man until we meet back in the dining hall. Mother will make this a dinner a big and crowded one. She has probably invited everyone of importance in some way.

“Let’s go Chalia.” I say hobbling past Farrah.
