Chapter 46: Veramood Lunatil

Morris put his hand on his forehead as he listened to Sigrid.

And this reaction made Sigrid begin to get worried.

“Will Alkerto be angry?” But Sigrid could not comprehend why would Alkero get mad.

“I know something is up when you ask about Alkerto. He is very proud means he won’t ask for any help from anyone. Ah—maybe not from me, because I’m noble. Maybe he would if it’s you… right, you and I are different. Ah, I don’t know!” Morris said in a groaning voice.

“But….”

“Wait, stop.” Morris raised his hand, interrupting Sigrid. “Don’t tell me about Alkerto’s financial condition or his private matters.”

Sigrid’s sunset eyes turned puzzled, but she still nodded.

Morris chuckled. “Alkerto and I are indeed friends. We’re friends but, Sigrid, I’m a noble.”

Sigrid was somewhat what Morris has been explaining.

‘I also used to be envious of Morris too.’

Sigrid was envious of Morris, who was born into a noble family. But now that he was her friend, she didn’t feel that anymore.

“Even if we’re friend, there are things we don’t share to share and things we don’t want to reveal.”

Sigrid nodded slowly listening to Morris.

“Like, mm, how Alkerto didn’t share his family condition or his financial status..”

It was very Morris way to point out the word ‘poverty’ without saying it.

But his explanation was sufficient, and Sigrid understood clearly.

“But I don’t mind at all.”

“I know.”

It was inconceivable that Sigrid would evaluate her friends based on their financial condition. Above all, she herself lived in extreme poverty.

“But not everyone thinks the same. ‘If I were you’ should not be in the center of our thought. Because in the end, people have no choice but to think about themselves. I myself still make a lot of mistakes, though I might not know it.” Morris reached out his hand and pulled Sigrid’s cheek lightly. He grinned as if telling her that he was not in a position to admonish anyone.

“I understand what you mean.” Sigrid kept nodding her head. Those words help her to understand. She was ignorant, but she wasn’t that stupid. “Then, should I apologize to Alkerto?”

“Well, just tell him honestly.”

Sigrid blinked and looked at Morris. ‘It’s like what Arcana has said.’

“But I don’t want to offend Alkerto.”

“He knows you, i think he won’t be that mad.” Morris nodded his head. This was Sigrid, not other people. If someone said ‘it seemes that the second son of the count is busy recently’, it was obviously a sarcastic remark. If it was Sigrid who said those words, it was a pure concern. That was also applied to what she did to Alkerto. Morris knew that it was just an innocent concern, and he also knew that Alkerto would understand.

“Alright.” Sigrid rose from her seat, feeling encouraged by Morris’ words. If he said it was fine, she’ll be fine! “I’m going.”

“Okay.” Morris wanted to go with Sigrid, but he knew if he also came, it would hurt Alkerto’s pride. He understood that feeling because he also had some circumstances he was not proud of.

“Thank you, Morris.” Sigrid grinned.

“What are you saying….” Morris shook his head.

“Mm.. but Rowen Green said that there is nothing to lose to say thank you and sorry.”

“Ah, you really.. You don’t have to be honest up to that point….” Morris chuckled. “Do you want me to lend you a carriage?”

“No need, I came here by riding a horse.”

“Okay.”

Morris saw Sigrid off to the front door.

Sigrid’s horse—Echo—was ready after being brushed when Sigrid was inside.

Sigrid asked as she got on her horse. “By the way, were you invited as well?”

“Where?”

“To the Marquis of Alsekidna’s ball.”

“Yeah.”

Sigrid nodded her head, “see you later.” then she went away.

There was a slight distance between Morris’ horse and Alkerto’s. After about 10 minutes, Sigrid finally arrived at Alkerto’s house.

*

Knock knock

Alkerto raised his head hearing the sound of knocking on his door.

“It’s Sigrid—”

“Oh, come in.”

Alkerto walked over to the door and quickly released the chain with one hand. Click—

When the door was opened, Sigrid entered.

Alkerto was puzzled seeing Sigrid, especially with the obvious tense expression on her face.

“What’s wrong?” Alkerto closed the door as soon as Sigrid entered. It had been a long time since he saw Sigrid has such a serious expression, so he couldn’t help but guess something serious had happened.

Sigrid stopped her words she was about to answer when she saw Alkerto’s arm. “Did you untie the armsling?”

“Huh? Oh, mm, it’s better now. Almost healed. So it’s fine.”

“That’s a relief.”

“Right, it got better faster than I thought. So, what’s going on?”

“That’s—” Sigrid swallowed her saliva. “I went to your house.”

Alkerto’s eyebrows frowned.

Sigrid thought she should tell him right away without any longer. “I just thought that because your arm was hurt, you couldn’t take care of your family recently, so I thought it would be convenient for you if I, your friend, would go and help. So I got your address from Morris… and I went and helped with the housework.”

“At my house?”

“Yeah.” Sigrid grabbed Alkerto’s hand while glancing at him.

“Did I ever ask for help?”

“No, but—”

“So, you think I’m someone who can’t take care my own family?”

“No!” Sigrid’s eyes were opened wide upon hearing those words.

“If not that, then what?” Alkerto’s voice was low and cold.

This was the first time Sigrid had seen such an expression on Alkerto’s face. He usually had a smile on his face. “I don’t like seeing you’re having a hard time because your family is having a hard time.”

Alkerto’s eyebrows frowned even more.

Sigrid then continued, “You’re my friend. If your family is important for you, then it is also important for me too. And it’s not difficult giving a help, no, even if it was difficult, I still would have helped.”

“Because they’re my family?”

“Yes.”

Alkerto stood still and looked at Sigrid. His face was distorted. He then let out a long sigh. “Don’t pity me.”

“Why should i pity you?” Sigrid asked.

Alkerto burst out laughing, surprised. He then smiled. “Because my family is poor?”

“Your family…poor?” Sigrid seriously agonized. “But you have a house, a farm, your sibling is going to school, and proper meal?”

“Right, your standard of a poverty is extremely poor.” Alkerto pointed to a chair. “Sit down. Now, all you have to drink is a cheap tea.”

“Well, your tea is better than the tea I used to drink.”

Alkerto laughed again hearing that.

Sigrid sat quietly in the chair.

Alkerto put the roughly made tea down in front of Sigrid, then sat across from her. “I’m angry.”

Sigrid was startled and then looked at Alkerto’s face.

Alkerto was smiling while looking at Sigrid with his turquoise smile. “I’m angry with you, and I’m angry that I’m angry with you.”
