Chapter 70 – The Xiahou Father and Son

“Understood!”

While Zhang Yuanqing verbally acknowledged, his mind wandered to the “Regretful Father,” and to Master Traceless, who had led him in his cultivation in an attempt at self-redemption.

An evil disciple attempts self-redemption, yet a Lawful walker can, for personal vendetta, engage in a fight that affects innocent bystanders.

Alas, where in the world is there pure good and evil? Human nature is inherently complex. Zhang Yuanqing found a deeper understanding in Li Dongze’s words, “Lawful does not equate to kindness.”

As for the Branch’s upper echelon’s stance on the matter, though the Palace Master of the Ending Killing Sect acted out of self-defense and did not actively instigate the incident, the arrest was the right decision given the resulting damage and loss of life.

How to penalize her is a matter for later; Zhang Yuanqing refrained from passing judgment. However, regarding the Xiahou Family’s punishment, he could only say it was expected.

On one hand, the Xiahou Family, a flourishing Spirit Realm Family with a profound legacy, would not easily be confronted by the Official organization over the lives of a few commoners.

Sometimes, those at the top only see the bigger picture; they fail to notice the ants beneath their feet.

On the other hand, the Xiahou Family and the Official organization are intricately linked. An organization is a mixed bag of characters, with various factions, good people, and inevitably bad ones.

It might even be too simplistic to define them as merely good or bad. It would be more accurate to say that everyone has their interests. If one were to describe the Official organization with a single concept, it would not be justice or kindness, but rather Lawfulness.

These truths were made very clear to Zhang Yuanqing as a child, listening to his grandfather at home, furiously denouncing the corrupt former head of the Public Security Bureau.

In short, the Xiahou Family, closely collaborating with certain powers within the government, would naturally receive “preferential treatment.”

Guan Ya saw his nod and smiled in satisfaction. Primordial was no greenhorn, more worldly than most his age – a good thing, as such a person could survive well within the system.

At that moment, Li Dongze emerged, “Guan Ya told you, right?”

“Decurion, I leave it to you to handle,” Zhang Yuanqing immediately said.

Li Dongze broke into a smile: “Guan Ya and I will cover for you. Betraying an Informant is not a gentleman’s virtue, and besides, the grudge between the Xiahou Family and the Ending Killing Sect is none of our concern, don’t get involved.”

He leaned on his cane, pointing out the stakes: “The motto of the Ending Killing Sect is ‘end war with war, end killing with killing,’ quite extreme. If you betray them today, you’ll face retaliation tomorrow; the Xiahou Family won’t back you up.”

“Understood.”

Zhang Yuanqing nodded.

Li Dongze glanced at Wang Tai, who was absorbed in his work, and said, “Primordial, come to my office. I’ll update you on the Black Guards of Impermanence case.”

Wang Tai was not part of the investigative team, and according to protocol, they couldn’t discuss the case in front of him.

This was the real issue. Zhang Yuanqing quickly stood up and followed Li Dongze into the office.

The two entered, one after the other. Zhang Yuanqing closed the door behind them as Li Dongze walked straight to his desk and pulled out a stack of documents.

“Coke?”

Li Dongze opened the liquor cabinet.

Given my current worth of 650,000, I should be drinking ’82 Lafite, thought Zhang Yuanqing as he nodded, “With less ice!”

Li Dongze shrugged his shoulders, dropped a small amount of ice into the glass, poured in some cola and whiskey, and returned to the sofa.

“Do you remember the List you provided last time?”

“I remember!”

“Based on the List, we’ve identified those people’s real-world identities. In this period, we successfully arrested one person and killed two. Among those killed, one was under the command of the Gu King.”

The Gu King is another Vice President and a rival to the Sinister Eye Judge.

The Five Elements Alliance moves quickly. It hasn’t been long, and they’ve already rooted out three Gu Sorcerers from the Spiritual Energy Society. Zhang Yuanqing, no longer a novice, knows how difficult it is to hunt down spirit realm walkers in the vast sea of people.

If the other party has an Item like the Disguise Ring, it’s virtually unsolvable.

The fact that the Official organization killed three Gu Sorcerers in a short time shows they mean business.

Li Dongze took a sip of the strong liquor and said:

“After Inquire the soul, we got some useful clues. The Black Guards of Impermanence are lurking in Songhai and seem to have other purposes.”

Zhang Yuanqing nodded in realization:

“I’ve always found it strange. If I were the Black Guards of Impermanence, with both the Official and the Gu King looking for me, why wouldn’t I change my hiding place? Do you know why the Black Guards of Impermanence are hiding in Songhai?”

Li Dongze shook his head:

“That might only be known to the Black Guards of Impermanence themselves, but we can deduce the answer from the clues. If the Black Guards of Impermanence are willing to take such a big risk to stay in Songhai, it means that the matter is extremely important, important enough to rival their life.”

Zhang Yuanqing frowned: “At this stage, shouldn’t he be receiving the Sinister Eye Judge’s legacy? By the way, what Level is the Black Guards of Impermanence?”

“Level 6, the peak of the Saint Realm.”

Gu Sorcerers are top-tier fighters. A Level 6 Gu Sorcerer, even if they can’t compete with Level 7 Lawful Classes, is certainly much stronger than others at the same level. That means, unless an Elder-level presence intervenes, it will be hard to deal with the Black Guards of Impermanence.

Zhang Yuanqing sighed inwardly. This is a tough spot Brother Bing has put me in, being just a Level 2 Night Wandering Deity, I’d be squashed with a flick of their finger.

Li Dongze then handed over the document, saying:

“Take a look.”

Zhang Yuanqing flipped open the document. It was a personal file with a photo of a man about thirty, with a gaunt face, droopy eyes, and sword-like eyebrows, lips pressed together, giving off a sharp aura.

“Spirit Realm ID: Reckless Rampage. Real name Zhu Jingyao. A Level 3 Gu Sorcerer and financial criminal, former securities company employee, used his position to gain illegitimate benefits.”

Zhang Yuanqing read the information and said: “I remember this person; he was on the List I provided.”

Li Dongze nodded: “The day before yesterday, Captain Green Vine of the Blossom Society received a tip. Someone saw this person in Kangyang District, but he disappeared quickly. Our local Spirit Realm Team in Kangyang District is in charge of this person, and he’s our target for the near future.”

If only we had the target’s DNA, then Red Dance Shoes could take care of everything. Zhang Yuanqing thought regretfully.

But having a target is good, better than being a headless fly.

“Knock, knock!”

The glass door of the office was tapped twice, and Guan Ya’s voice came through:

“Decurion, people from the Xiahou Family have arrived.”

Li Dongze and Zhang Yuanqing exchanged a glance. The latter put away the documents while the former spoke in a serious tone:

“Please let them in.”

Seconds later, Guan Ya led two men into the office. One was a middle-aged man in a suit, with a crew cut, standing tall and exuding an air of brisk efficiency. His features were decent, although his eyes were a bit small.

The other was a young man in his mid-twenties, dressed in a white shirt with the top buttons undone and the tail not tucked in, giving off a carefree and rebellious vibe.

He bore some resemblance to the middle-aged man but was more handsome, with a Korean-style long haircut that was messy yet aesthetic, complemented by silver earrings – the type that would attract attention in a nightclub.

“My name is Xiahou Xin, and this is my son, Xiahou Tianyuan,” said the middle-aged man with a smile.

“Welcome, welcome,” Li Dongze said with a flourish of his mustache as he smiled: “Mr. Xiahou, please have a seat!”

He shook hands warmly with the middle-aged man, guiding both guests to their seats, and then asked Guan Ya to prepare some hot tea.

Xiahou Xin waited calmly for Guan Ya to serve the tea before saying:

“Decurion Li must be aware of the purpose of my visit. The Palace Master of the Ending Killing Sect has gone too far, almost killing my eldest son. We cannot let this vendetta go unanswered. We’ve discovered that Wang Qian, a doctor at Pingtai Hospital, is a member of the Ending Killing Sect. He fled when we attempted to apprehend him.

“Our information indicates that this man is an informant under Decurion Li. We hope you can draw him out for us. Should you succeed, the Xiahou Family will be most grateful.”

The Palace Master of the Ending Killing Sect beat up this Xiahou Xin’s son? I heard from Xie Lingxi that he’s the legitimate heir of the Xiahou Family; this Xiahou Xin must hold a high position, Zhang Yuanqing thought, giving the middle-aged man another look.

At that moment, he noticed the young man named Xiahou Tianyuan giving him a somewhat disdainful glance.

“This…” Li Dongze’s face was full of smiles, yet he spoke helplessly:

“It’s indeed outrageous for the Palace Master to humiliate young master Xiahou Tianwen. His death would be insignificant. However, after last night’s battle, the Ending Killing Sect is on high alert; how could they fall for a trick? I truly wish to help but find myself powerless.”

Xiahou Tianyuan glanced at Zhang Yuanqing again and said displeased:

“Isn’t it simple? Send Wang Qian a message saying that someone within the Five Elements Alliance disapproves of the Xiahou Family and inquire if the Ending Killing Sect needs assistance. Start by extending an olive branch to bait him, then plan step by step. If you can’t do it, give me the phone.”

As long as they establish contact with Wang Qian, they have ways to draw him out. What they currently lack is someone who can make Wang Qian willing to “communicate.”

Li Dongze sighed: “Well then, I’ll just be frank. Alas, when immortals fight, mortals suffer. We do not wish to get involved in the grievances between the Xiahou Family and the Ending Killing Sect. I’m sorry, but we cannot help.”

“What did you say?” Xiahou Tianyuan was incredulous.

The Xiahou Family had already locked down several leads on Ending Killing Sect members, with the Second Team in Kangyang District being one of them. In Xiahou Tianyuan’s view, faced with a request from the Xiahou Family, such an unremarkable team should be eager to help and curry favor.

Xiahou Tianyuan wasn’t being arrogant; it’s just that teams like this were a dime a dozen within the Five Elements Alliance, whereas Spirit Realm Families like the Xiahou Family were few in the country.

This was akin to a city management team refusing a request from a large corporation with official backing.

Guan Ya rolled her eyes and said, “Can’t understand? Want me to translate that into a foreign language for you?”

“You,” Xiahou Tianyuan said with a face full of anger. Since when did a female employee dare to speak to him like that?

In his eyes, being pretty didn’t grant any special privileges.

Xiahou Xin glanced at Guan Ya and used his gaze to stop his son from getting angry, then earnestly said:

“This matter is very important to the Xiahou Family, please, Decurion Li, you must agree.”

While verbally addressing Decurion Li, his gaze was fixed on Guan Ya.

Li Dongze wore a troubled expression. With his status, refusing once was already at its limit. A further refusal could lead to being suppressed.

This was the moment when Guan Ya needed to step in.

“What does the Xiahou Family’s affair have to do with us?” Guan Ya glanced at the father and son duo opposite her:

“Just because it’s important to the Xiahou Family, we must help? If the Ending Killing Sect retaliates against my colleagues, will your Xiahou Family stand in for them? Protecting them 24/7? Or are you just trying to use your family’s influence to pressure us, treating my colleague as a tool? Thinking a promise of gratitude will make us take risks to help, your calculations are indeed loud. You want to lure out Wang Qian, right? Fine, bring ten items in exchange.”

“Are you crazy?” Xiahou Tianyuan laughed angrily. “Who do you think you are? Ten items, I’m afraid you don’t have the life to enjoy them.”

Guan Ya’s face broke into a cold smile: “One more word and I’ll blow you away with a single shot.”

Xiahou Xin, with a ferocious look, stopped his son who was raging like thunder and took a deep look at Guan Ya, saying:

“We are sorry to have bothered you!”

Xiahou Tianyuan looked stunned at his father.

Xiahou Xin rose with a cold expression and walked out of the office.

Xiahou Tianyuan glared fiercely at Guan Ya before following his father out.

Li Dongze slowly exhaled and got up to stretch his back, saying with a relaxed face:

“Alright, let’s put an end to this matter. Ah, these big families are not easy to provoke.”

He quickly added with a respectful tone: “In the system, we always have to face similar issues. Mediation and compromise are the supreme laws within the system.”

Decurion, you don’t need to explain this to me. The Xiahou Family isn’t that overbearing, or is it that Guan Ya’s background is too profound? Zhang Yuanqing realized he might have underestimated Guan Ya.

Anyone with eyes could see that Xiahou Xin, a direct descendant of the Xiahou Family, was clearly wary of Guan Ya.

This useless Decurion seemed steady as an old dog, but in reality, he was hiding under Guan Ya’s protective skirt.

But I don’t remember the Guan family being among the Spirit Realm Families, oh right, Guan Ya is a Spirit Realm ID, not her real name.

“Sigh, compared to becoming the Xie Family’s son-in-law, I suddenly find the idea of being the Guan Family’s son-in-law more appealing,” said Zhang Yuanqing, half-jokingly, half-probing.

The old driver didn’t take the bait, looked him up and down, and clicked her tongue twice:

“You won’t do, you’re too small.”

Zhang Yuanqing, not convinced, retorted: “How would you know? You’ve never seen it.”

“Alright then, let’s go to the restroom and you can show me.”

“Let’s go!”

“Let’s go!”

Li Dongze leaned on his cane, shaking his head slightly. These two, one had never had a boyfriend, and the other had never had a girlfriend; their skills were all in their mouths.

After having lunch at the office, Zhang Yuanqing lingered until one in the afternoon, mindful that he had a Professional Course later. He slung his backpack over his shoulders and left the Public Security Bureau, scanned a shared bicycle, and leisurely made his way to school.

Just as he crossed the traffic light, a black sedan sped towards him, forcing him to a stop at the side of the road.

In the back seat of the black sedan were Xiahou Xin and his son.
