“Oh, Lucy, did you know that baron Taugenix got a new stallion? It is apparently of a special breed.” No I did not know that. And neither did I care. But the voice … I wanted to hear more of her. That voice, a ghost of the past, could very well be from an entirely different person but deep down in my heart, I knew it had to be her.

My first friend was back. My best friend who sacrificed herself for the greater good. For me.

Luna.

During all these years, I hadn´t forgotten about her. Not a single day we spent together was buried in my subconsciousness, not a single bit of happiness forgotten. My feelings for her welled up again, not because I was driven to her because of her life, but rather because I was genuinely interested in her.

“Oh, and the demons are trying to cross the river once more, but the fortifications the coalition of all the races build fended them off.” She gently caressed my hair as if it was the most beautiful thing on the world. “Hey, I heard your voice yesterday. I gained a new title! ‘Caretaker of the Saint! The two intelligence it gives me is awesome. I can finally use a thunderbolt now!” She said happily and jumped around the bed I was laying on.

“And the academy agreed to take me in as a student. Isn´t that great?” I could feel how the duvet was pulled of my skin and soon afterwards a wet cloth cleaned me … which honestly felt disgusting, no matter how I looked at it. Surely, it helped that Luna was the one doing the cleaning, but the water felt horrible on my skin. At least it was over relatively quickly and the comfortable textile covered me again soon afterwards.

“And now towards the book we will read: Applied Mana Manipulation for Beginners.” She said and sat down on a chair right next to me. I could hear her turning a few pages until she started to read a thirty year old book I read once before. I really wanted to move my soul out of my body to see her, but I couldn’t chant at all. And without it, most of my spells tended to increase in complexity, putting further burden on my soul and body which I did want to avoid at this point.

And so, I could only listen to her mesmerizing voice as she read chapter after chapter for herself, but also for me. And that seriously touched my heart. She could have read it quietly and nobody would have noticed, but she didn´t do so, even though she must have known that I was asleep.

It was a beautiful time where I even managed to ignore my own voice in my head completely. But sadly, it came to an end after a few hours as she closed the thick book again.

“Oh, here is your … drink.” She said and knelt to my side on the bed. I could feel how a lid of a bottle was pressed onto my lower lip. Shortly afterwards, delicious blood entered my mouth and ran down my throat without any issues. She was feeding me human blood and she certainly knew about it. And despite being aware of my race, she seemed to have no problems around me whatsoever. Well, a huge reason to that was probably that I was quite immobile.

“Okay then. Bye bye! Till tomorrow.” She said and closed the lid to my side. She immediately stood up and walked out of the room while humming happily. Truly, she was one of a kind, capable of making even me euphoric about her presence alone.

I listened to her footsteps a little bit, but they vanished nearly instantly as soon as the door closed. It was daytime, that was for sure. I waited several more minutes until I tried to move yet again, but was still unable to do so.

For hours, I trashed against the invisible barriers stopping me from doing anything. Sometime along the line, I felt my strength returning to my body as my senses sharpened. But even then, I couldn’t move.

Something was holding me back. Something that was meant to stop me from moving by accident. I could feel it weighing on my soul as I went deep into myself. I could feel how it stopped the connection from me and my body from forming properly.

Simply annoyed by the audacity the council of gods had, I concentrated on this godly magic fiddling with my soul and swamped it with death itself. I wasn’t even sure if it would work, but the lock around my soul sprang open like it was nothing. A huge factor was probably that it was my soul the magic was fiddling with. I managed to stop any god from fiddling with me a hundred and sixty years ago, including Aska. Sure they could still tear my soul to shreds within a few seconds, but he wasn’t able to manipulate my soul afterwards.

I was the sole ruler of myself. I and no other person.

A bit angry, I opened my eyes and stared at a ceiling covered in murals. Humans and elves alike were praying to a white silhouette on it, making me burst out into laughter. If I could that was. My body was two hundred years on ice and my muscles must have deteriorated considerably. Luckily for me though, they started to regenerate slowly as soon as I re-established the connection between my body and soul properly.

First, I could only move a few fingers in this bright room, but more followed suit afterwards. After an hour or so, I even managed to stand up with wobbly legs and had a closer look at the room. It was brightly lit by lamps that immediately got on my nerves because they were quite bright and hurt whenever I looked into them. The ceiling was quite luxurious, and so was the bed, ornamented walls and the marble floor. The church seriously put a lot of effort into this room. Truth to be told, I wouldn’t even care if I woke up in a coffin as long as it wasn´t buried somewhere.

Letting my gaze travel one last time through the room, I found absolutely nothing of notable interest except the pictures on the walls and knelt on the bed again. I wrapped myself in the comfortable large duvet, balled my hands into fists and then released them again. I wasn’t back at full strength yet, but it was only matter of time.
