Chapter 2.54

A new day.

A sober Hannah.

And the sounds of frolicking birds.

These were all the things waking me up in the morning on the 12 of June in the year 200 since the ascension of the saint.

It was the day were I would leave normality behind for the time being and start what I set out to do since coming back.

To reduce Aska’s influence on this world.

I certainly didn’t know where it ended, but I did know the root of his sway over the world. The church of death. And starting that day, I would declare war on them.

Okay, we may have spied on them since I got back, and the whore rose in their ranks rather steadily through various means, so one could argue that while I played normal, we were already at a low intensity war.

But that all didn’t matter much in the early morning because I had a few other issues I needed to solve first. For example if I wanted to roll off Hannah or not.

She was comfortable for sure. But she was also poking my sides already and tried to get me off her while I just hugged her tighter in return.

In the end though, I had to give up as she started tickling me which was one of my worst weaknesses during the day. Rolling off her, she immediately stood up in front the bed, seemingly averting her gaze from me all together.

“Do we want to talk about it?” The last night where she was drunk was definitely not normal. I had never seen her like this before and it didn’t fit her character as well.

“Look, I didn’t like being left outside like some dog. I know it was not your fault, but it was still incredibly depressing to wait outside for hours. And then … you know, I didn’t want to stand around there doing nothing … I seriously overestimated how much I should drink though. If you do it, it looks so easy.“ That was probably only the case because I would drink vodka as if it was water. Well then, at least she could explain her reasoning behind the mess from the day before, so I wasn’t too worried she would become more and more unreliable. I would have to watch out for her feelings though. Especially leaving her alone would be dangerous as she didn’t take that well.

“Alrighty. Let’s pack and move out then!” I exclaimed and followed her in storing the meagre amount of stuff we had collected over the last month. It really wasn’t much – a few books about anatomy there, a few sharp knifes here, and that was really it. We weren’t materialistic in that regard.

After swiping through the room with a broom a few times, we collected the sheets and put them on the bed for the owner to collect them later easily. We didn’t want him to say we were ungrateful guests, would we?

After looking through the room once more, we strolled out into the familiar hallway.

“And, are you going to miss this place?” Hannah asked shortly before the stairs.

“It was nice.” I said, neither confirming nor denying her assumption. In truth, it was mediocre. There wasn’t much fun around that place and while that bit of normality did me some good, I also missed the mayhem I usually caused.

“Hey Lars! Is Sofie still around?” I asked as I spotted him at the bar counter. He was already cleaning his mugs at an early hour which was definitely something he didn’t do usually.

“She left rather early. Said something that she had to sneak in with the employees.” He said a bit bummed out.

“Oh, okay. Here is the key for our room.” I said and slid the keys over to him.

“Are you really leaving? Why not stay a bit longer?” He proposed. I could see in his eyes that he grew genuinely fond of me and Hannah. It probably had a lot to do with the fact that I got him new costumers through my saintly singing.

“I was offered a teaching opportunity I cannot miss out on.” Hannah reasoned swiftly. And she wasn’t even lying which did make everything even better.

“What a shame. Well then, I wish you best luck on your future endeavours. And Lucy? Please continue to make others happy. Your shows were fabulous.” He said and really meant it that way. Even though I had no fun singing at all, others found pleasure in listening to me which was something I was very conscious about.

“Thank you so much. We wish you all the best for you as well.” Hannah said gently and waved towards him. That day was the last time we ever saw him but not because we burnt down his house or some shit, but rather because we simply had no reason to visit him. It was a rather lame goodbye, but he wasn’t a great antagonist or a friend of mine but even then it was kind of memorable. It was just a normal farewell … and these were incredibly rare for me.

A bit weirded out by it, we left after bidding our farewell and found ourselves in a large crowd of pedestrians heading in the direction of  the noble district within minutes.

Following one of the four main veins of the city, we made our way to the eastern noble gate, all while I kept my gaze glued on the compass. The needle was fixated where we were going for most part as it pointed just a bit further north than the gate we were heading to was. It was pointing to Sofie, no doubt about that. What was interesting though is that once Hannah held the compass, it instantly pointed towards the north once more.

Fascinated by the magical properties of the compass, or rather myself as the phenomenon also didn’t happen as I was a few metres away from it, I kept an eye on it even though I didn’t know what to make of it yet. Surely, this was the reason why I met Sofie involuntarily and I disliked it because of that. It also ruined my usual way of strolling through the city with a map, but it also gave me lots and lots of information.

First of all, I always knew in which direction she was and could find Sofie without any issues. Additionally, I highly doubted this compass only allowed me to find Sofie and even though I couldn’t let it switch to Hannah for example, I still believed I could target a group of people.

And even though I had no proof whatsoever, I kind of assumed this power worked on all of those who were like her. And there was only a select few like her.

I still hadn’t finished guessing why I had this ability nor where I got it from as we already passed the gates with it fake status screen. As we were close to Tom’s villa though, I could already logically deduct that it must have been Aska who had his dirty little fingers mingling with my fate and not some other god. Irminsul was out of the question as she probably had no incentive to let me know where Sofie is all the time and another god wouldn’t give me this ability either. I was just too volatile for them to guess my actions in advance.

And so, there was only Aska left. He knew how I would use this ability very well, he understood what went through my head. The only issue was that my soul was shielded off from any outside influence. I would have noticed if he fiddled with me for hundreds of years already which could only mean that this ability is far, far older than my godly abilities.

Sadly, I couldn’t confirm any of this as I was unable to ram a sword through Aska’s chest right at this moment and I had no way of confirming since when compasses had such a weird behaviour around me as I had never seen them acting strangely before.

As such, I was quite aggressive to the butler who greeted us once we entered the mansion not because I was unable to find out more about this ability, but rather because I couldn’t torture Aska right then for messing with me once more.

Only a whistling Tom who already awaited us downstairs improved my mood slightly. Grinning, he even showed his sharp canine and pointed towards a closed nearby door.

Despite the sun ruining most of my senses, I could still hear a faint animalistic growling in the shut off room.

“Open it.” I commanded after trying to open it myself without any success.

“Ahh that’s always such a hassle.” He explained and rolled his eyes but he did follow my order nonetheless. He picked out three keys from his pocket, unlocked three different mechanisms with one of them probably even magical, and finally stepped back from the door afterwards.

“It is all yours.” He said as I stepped close to the door once more. The heavy iron door barely moved as I pushed against it with my full strength but I did manage to open it slowly, revealing more and more of the room and letting more and more noise outside. And this noise must have increased considerably since I tried to open the door for the first time because I finally understood why Tom didn’t want to have it open.

Two wolf like creatures snarled at us aggressively and threw themselves against their cages with all their might. Hungry red eyes, shimmering with hatred gazed at me from time to time. These weren’t normal wolves.

These were wolves corrupted by mana and turned into something sinister. Two direwolves going at least to my belly button were inside these magically reinforced cages, howling their lives out of their lungs. For several minutes, I merely watched the spectacle until they slowly but surely calmed down somewhat.

“What’s all the clamour about? Oh … slut.” The whore approached us from the door and somehow the doggos didn’t seem to mind her that much. Well, the meat in her hands was probably an explanation for their weird behaviour. Even with all the evidence, I sincerely hopes she ensnared these wolves with her succubus abilities.

“Whore. Aren’t you supposed to be besides the pope?” I asked and watched how she threw a portion of the meat into the cages. The wolves immediately pounced on it and shredded it into pieces like some hungry beasts.

“Hey, unlike other people employers, he is giving me a proper break. What are you even here for? Did you like being a duck that much?” She asked amused immediately flaring up my anger.

“Hey, at least I am not a fan of donkeys.” I commented and watched how Tom watched the activities within the cages intensely.

“What are you talking about?” Hannah asked confused. It was obvious she wouldn’t understand as she wasn’t with us four days ago, but I highly doubted she wanted to know as well.

“My dear Hannah, in a sense they are talking about dogs. And besides, I really like dogs. Once you grow up, you will understand eventually.” Both the whore and I groaned unnerved. When he wasn’t stabbing or choking me, he was seriously a bit too vanilla for both of our tastes. I really had to wonder how he managed to live with such a slutty woman for so long, and stayed so tame at the same time.

“Just because I am a few years younger than you? Lucinda, could you …” No, I could not explain what we were just talking about. And I think I made my unwillingness crystal clear as I snipped against the metal cage repeatedly and observed the demon inside.

“And? When do you want to take that thing apart?”

“Hopefully in one and a half week. And I also don’t see any tools here, so we will do it somewhere else.”

“Relocating it is quite troublesome. I heard that three of Hannah’s men died to capture them.”

“That was just because they were incompetent.” Hannah said without any remorse in her voice. “And could someone please explain me what being a duck, a donkey or a dog means?” All of us averted our gazes, including the wolf in front of me who was given another piece of meat to break the awkward atmosphere. Nobody told her what we did three nights ago that day and even back then I was sure it would remain that way.
