Chapter 2.9

This whole game thing was weird. Everyone seemed focused on their stats and some, including my own father, were incredibly focused on it. And yet, I still didn´t understand a thing about it. I heard that voice quite often since I came to this world, always with the same result.

I put most of it in intelligence and wisdom, which changed nothing about me. But I liked that these attributes increased by two instead of one. And two is better than one, right? Right!

Sadly, it was impossible to show the status screen to others except in a church which was hours away. I would love to show dad how fast I increased these attributes as he was always outside, either training with his sword or fighting some monsters somewhere in an attempt to increase his stats. And honestly? After my fourth year of living, I was quite fed up with the fact that they didn´t belief me at all. As if it was entirely impossible that I levelled up so often. And truth to be told, as soon as I started running around outside, I levelled up even more.

And so, I lied to them. It hurt doing so, but it hurt even more to see my beloved parents doubting me. And outside of these occasions, our relationship was incredibly good. Mum and dad were always lovely dovely with each other and both of them loved me as well. It was only natural that I started to accept them as my parents and opened up to them.

It was no wonder that they perceived me as quite the genius as I talked to them earlier than other kids, walked earlier than others and so on. They showered me in praise, which was really the thing I was after. I always loved it when they patted my head or allowed me to sleep in their bed, filled with straw.

We had a happy family life, even though we were incredibly poor. Dad worked full time, and mum sewed stuff whenever she had time but despite this, there was just enough for the three of us to eat properly. We could only afford a shabby hut in a rather small village, far away from all the major cities where life was apparently a lot better. Especially the north where we lived was quite dangerous. I wasn’t even allowed to go outside the village borders once. Not even my dad wanted to show me around, and he was out there day after day.

But I could see the reason why. Something was out there in the woods. Dad came home with bruises and cuts quite often and there were even a few traveling soldiers … who they apparently called adventurers for some reason. But they kept us safe, so they could call themselves whatever they wanted.

As I lived my happy village life and played around with the few friends I made, I even spoke to some of these adventurers. Most were quite friendly, while others were clearly muscle heads and quite rude. But they all didn´t stay long as they had to earn their pay, so forming any kind of stronger bond with any of them was neigh impossible.

As I turned eight though, my life started to change somewhat. A travelling priest arrived at the village.

During the same night, all the children were gathered at the inn he stayed at. Together with our parents, we visited his room one by one.

“Ahh, the Wolle family?”

“I am amazed you remembered, father.” My dad said even though it weirded me out a bit. But religion was weird … even though I believed in the goddess of life as well.

“Oh, no … there aren’t many young girls in this village, and as far as I am aware, I met every single one of them already, leaving only you, Sofie. How are you feeling today?” The priest asked with a calming smile on his face.

“Great.” I mentioned casually while hoping this would be over sooner. I wanted to play with a few friends after this.

“Did your parents tell you what we are going to do today?” Yes they did. The only thing I could hope for was that they wouldn’t freak out though.

“… they want you to check my status screen.” I told him meekly, hoping he wouldn’t go crazy if I presented myself as pitiful.

“Correct. We priests have the task of guiding others towards their destination, whatever that may be. We will take a look at your stats and all the hidden information that isn´t shown on the status board and then we will talk about your future. Remember, I am only here to give advice, it is up to you if you follow it.” He leaned forwards and whispered into my ear. “And just among us: My advice isn’t that good.” He was a nice man, I had to give him that. I could see how nervous my parents were, as if this was a turning point in my life.

“Okay …” I muttered, still thinking what I would do when everything came to light.

“So, you just need to place your hand on this bulb and I will do the rest, okay?”

“O-Okay.” I said and did exactly what he said. Immediately, the bulb started to glow in a gentle yellow light and my status screen appeared for everyone to see.

“This is …” Everyone was shocked. Except me of course, but that was to be expected.

“Father, what is the meaning of this?” Dad asked in shock.

“Have I done anything wrong?” I asked slowly as the reverend failed to articulate himself right away and rather turned into a fish, gasping for air.

“Honey, do you know what level your dad is?” Mum asked, slowly getting a grip of herself.

“Uh … no?” I asked slowly.

“49, and he trained his whole life.” Ehh … shit. Would my life change due to that? Please not, because I really loved living in this village. I didn´t want to be parted from them, but the priest and my parents apparently had a different opinion.

“I will inform the bishop immediately. I am sure we can give your child a scholarship.” He said and smiled at me wryly. So much for choosing my own future because my parents would be adamant on sending me away.
