Five minutes later, the local police arrived, but the scene was already under the Municipal Bureau’s control. The injured was brought into an ambulance, and most of the fleeing assailants including Bald Head had already been captured and arrested.

As the highest ranking officer on site, Lu Feng had full authority to implement the following actions: Because the gang led by Bald Head was suspected of intentional harm, the case would be transferred to the Criminal Investigation Team with the local police station assisting in the investigation.

The police chief had a smile across his whole face as he subserviently said, “After we received the report, we attached great importance to it, immediately organizing a team to go launch an investigation…” An unceasing torrent of words left his mouth. Seeming sincere, he spoke such beautiful words, but not once did he mention the transfer of jurisdiction for this case.

The chief believed that although Lu Feng was only half a rank higher than him, he had no way of controlling him. Thus, he could only act dumb.

On the inside, the police chief sneered. This case happened within their area of jurisdiction, so why was the Municipal Bureau taking this case away? Lu Feng had originally given him a call to offer clues about the child abuse happening in Chaoyang Orphanage. He wondered. Ever since the crackdown began a year ago, the people of Xincheng felt threatened and had been in a state of extreme panic and paranoia. He didn’t have a close private relationship with Lu Feng. Why would he remind him of this? If this matter was exposed by the news media, he definitely wouldn’t be able to sit still as the chief of the police station. And although the criminal investigation team often cooperated with the police station, they didn’t have any sort of relationship that was built on benefits. Lu Feng had no need to sell this favor to him.

After the chief thought it over, he guessed that there must be some sort of duplicity going on, so he personally led a team to the scene to come and take a look. And sure enough, something really was fishy. Lu Feng’s words sounded so beautiful, and he extended his hand so far. The police station was closer to Chaoyang Orphanage, but the Municipal Bureau arrived earlier. On the surface, Lu Feng appeared to be informing him, but he had actually come to catch his pigtail. As for the child abuse case he mentioned, how did it turn into a gang assault? According to the chief’s thoughts, this must have been deliberate on Lu Feng’s part.

The chief was in his fifties. Seeing that he had no hope of getting a promotion, he killed off his desire of climb up. Now, all that he wanted could be encapsulated in one word: stability. Since the case happened within his jurisdiction, he felt that he should be the one doing the arresting. Doing it himself would make him feel at ease.

Lu Feng didn’t argue with him. He patiently waited for him to finish speaking in bureaucratic prose before waving at Xiao Zhou, who had returned after capturing the gang members. “Take them all away!”

The chief’s eyes widened. “Lu Feng!”

Lu Feng turned his head toward him.

The chief spread his hands. “The way you’re acting… is too unreasonable!”

The clamorous scene suddenly fell silent. Bald Head’s face revealed his joy. A slight frown formed on Xiao Zhou’s face, and for a moment, he didn’t make a move.

Lu Feng shot Xiao Zhou a glance. Understanding what he wanted, he escorted the gang members into the police cars.

The chief’s face grew pale. Very well, he really held no regard for his position as the chief of the police station!

Lu Feng walked up to Cai Youyang and asked, “You have any paper?”

Cai Youyang took a brief look at the fuming police chief. “Yeah. What do you need it for?”

Lu Feng stretched out his hand. “Give me one.”

Cai Youyang took out a palm-sized notepad from his pocket and tore out a page for him. “It’s a bit small.”

“It’s enough.” Lu Feng then took out the fountain pen inside his coat pocket, uncapped the pen, and wrote a string of numbers on the paper before going back to the chief and handing him the paper.

The chief didn’t want to take it, but considering Lu Feng was half a rank higher than him, he still took it. “What’s this?” he asked, baffled.

Lu Feng responded, “This is the telephone number of the office of Deputy Director Tan, who’s in charge of the Municipal Bureau of Criminal Investigation. If you have any complaints, you can call him.”

The chief: “…”

Lu Feng nodded in greeting. “I’ll be taking my leave.” Afterward, he waved at Cai Youyang. “Let’s go.”

Cai Youyang didn’t dare look at the chief’s face and dragged Teacher Wu into Lu Feng’s car. They were witnesses and had to go to the bureau to have their testimonies taken. Having been wrecked, Teacher Wu’s car couldn’t be driven anymore, but they’d already called the insurance company. The insurance company would send someone to tow it away.

The criminal investigation unit took away all the suspects, witnesses, and injured and collected all the evidence that they could find from the scene. The glass fragments, the footprints, and the fingerprints. All that was left for the police station was a worn-down car amidst the night breeze.

The police officers stared at their chief, who was holding onto the paper that the captain had given him in a daze. That captain was too arrogant, roared the old chief in his fifties to himself.

Deputy Director Tan’s office soon called Lu Feng’s phone. The police chief really did call and express his complaints. But Lu Feng had always ignored all these complaints and accusations. With his gaze fixed at the interrogation room’s monitoring, he pretended to be listening to whoever was on the other side of the phone before responding with a casual “okay.” The only things floating in his mind were about the case. Deputy Director Tan knew the extent of his own position. He spoke a few perfunctory words of criticism before hanging up. The old chief couldn’t not be treated with courtesy, but Lu Feng was like his senior general. He couldn’t offend Lu Feng. The deputy director knew with great clarity that without Lu Feng, their case-solving rate would be terrible. And without a splendid case-solving rate, he would have no political achievements under his belt.

Cai Youyang and Teacher Wu were allowed to go home after providing their testimonies. Teacher Wu took a taxi back, but Cai Youyang lingered outside the Public Security Bureau. The police officer standing guard by the entrance stared at him several times and couldn’t help approaching and grabbing him. What was he doing loitering and looking around for? This was the Public Security Bureau!

Fortunately, Xiao Zhou had just gotten off work and happened to run into him on his way out. He hurriedly stopped the little brother who was only doing his duty and then asked Cai Youyang to come in. “Waiting for Captain Lu?” asked Xiao Zhou with a smile. He acted in a very friendly manner, as though Cai Youyang was one of his own people.

Cai Youyang knew that Lu Feng hadn’t come out of the closet at the Public Security Bureau yet, so he cautiously said, “I wanted to hitch a ride. I reckoned that you’ll all be clocking off soon, so I just waited here.”

“Ohh,” said Xiao Zhou, elongating the syllable. “So you wanted to hitch a ride. I happened to have gotten off work just now. How about hitching a ride in my car?”

In a tactful manner, Cai Youyang said, “But our houses aren’t along the same route?”

Xiao Zhou responded, “Of course it is! Definitely!” He immediately divulged the community where he lived. “Is it close to your house?”

“You know where I live?”

“I don’t, I don’t.” Then he mysteriously lowered his voice as he asked, “Hey, do you like to eat huajia?”

Cai Youyang: “Huh?!”

Xiao Zhou let out a laugh. “Hehehe…”

“I always felt like you knew a little more than you let on,” expressed Cai Youyang.

Xiao Zhou wave his hands in denial. “I don’t know anything.”

“What are you chatting about?” Lu Feng suddenly butted in.

Xiao Zhou subconsciously stood at attention. “Captain Lu!”

Lu Feng coldly told him, “I see you still have quite a lot of energy left. Continue working overtime tomorrow.”

In a rush, Xiao Zhou pleaded, “Please don’t. Captain Lu, I already haven’t been able to come home on time for three days in a row. My wife’s about to make me sleep on the sofa.”

“Officer Lu, Officer Zhou only said he wanted to take me home,” explained Cai Youyang on behalf of Xiao Zhou.

Lu Feng’s gaze toward Xiao Zhou grew even more terrifying.

Xiao Zhou: “…” He was just joking!

He only wanted to tease Teacher Cai. He didn’t think that he would end up tripping on his own feet.

Xiao Zhou tried to free himself from this predicament, saying, “Our lovely wives are still waiting for us at home, so we shouldn’t stay with our superiors for a long time.”

When Cai Youyang saw Xiao Zhou running away in a panic, he burst into boisterous laughter. Looking at Xiao Zhou’s current state, just where did his courage and bravery when capturing Bald Head go?

Sitting inside Lu Feng’s car and going back home. Cai Youyang sighed with emotion. “Didn’t expect Xiao Zhou to be a henpecked husband.”

Lu Feng said, “If I hadn’t come out, you would’ve gone home in his car?”

Cai Youyang said, “Well, if you still hadn’t gotten off work after a while…” Then he suddenly felt a murderous aura. He couldn’t help but tremble. Thus, with a sincere expression, he corrected himself in an amazingly natural manner, “…I still wouldn’t take his car! I love sitting in my man’s car!”

The murderous aura immediately dissipated.
