After Cai Youyang contacted Lu Feng, the local police station finally picked up. Their tone was polite and sincere. They first asked him to wait a moment and then told him he would send someone right away.

He truly couldn’t pick out any mistakes. If he didn’t know that Teacher Wu had been ignored after calling the police himself, Cai Youyang would’ve been moved. But now, he just felt uncomfortable, so he simply said a few words and hung up.

At this time, Teacher Wu understood and said, “Do you have people within the local police there?”

Cai Youyang shook his head. “No.”

Teacher Wu’s face revealed his doubts.

“I have a good friend in the Municipal Bureau.”

“…” Teacher Wu muttered, “No wonder.” He had picked someone out of desperation, but Teacher Cai was actually the embodiment of “capable people don’t show off.” This time, he indeed hugged a true Buddha.

Since the local police station was willing to handle this, Teacher Wu no longer planned to charge into the orphanage by himself. This was a remote location. Go just one kilometer north of here, and you’d already be in the countryside. If the people from the orphanage were cruel and had him killed, they could easily dispose of his corpse in one of the farmers’ manure pits. How could anyone find him by then? Just the thought of it sent shudders down Teacher Wu’s spine.

The above was only extreme speculation, but it was also possible for them to beat him up and break his limbs as a warning. Teacher Wu knew that he was a teacher and had a responsibility to society, but he still wasn’t willing to get into a physical altercation.

Cai Youyang said, “The orphanage is just around the corner, but I’m not letting you go. Although the police are coming soon, maybe there are children there that are suffering right now. Do you hate my cowardice?”

“No,” answered Teacher Wu. “I tricked you into coming with me. Besides, I also don’t dare go.”

“I thought you were itching to rush in and rescue them at once. Since you’re scared, why do you want to meddle in this?”

Teacher Wu let out a laugh. “You’re still asking me. Why are you willing to stay here with me? I can take care of it. Just because our sense of justice is strong enough doesn’t mean that we can overcome this barrier in our hearts. It’s alright if we didn’t know. But if we do know and just ignore it, then it’ll be hard on our conscience whenever we think about this matter in the future. Will we be able to live well?” He restrained a smile and sadly said, “I’m not Jesus. I’m just an ordinary, cowardly person.”

Cai Youyang noticed his raised eyebrows and anxious eyes. Wanting to ease his worries, he pretended to casually change the topic, saying, “Is there a small shop nearby? I’m a little thirsty.”

“There is,” said Teacher Wu. When he looked out the window, he saw that night already enveloped the land. The stars were also dim, and the moon was hidden behind dark clouds. “It’s already dark. Let’s go together.”

“Ok.”

Teacher Wu turned off the car lights, got out of the car with Cai Youyang, and took him back to the shop. They each bought a drink and drank it while they were making their way back to the car. Teacher Wu then mentioned that there were no street lamps and asked whether he wanted to use his phone’s flashlight.

“It’s not that far. There’s no…” His voice faltered when he glanced at where the car was parked and spotted what was happening around the car.

Teacher Wu followed his line of sight. More than 10 motorcycles were parked along the side of the road. His black Volkswagen was surrounded by people. They were holding iron rods and fire axes, smashing the windows and the front of the car. The glass windows had already been smashed, and the screams of a man could be faintly heard from inside the car.

The two looked at each other, spotting the uncontrollable fear within each other’s eyes. It turned out that Teacher Wu’s car was being watched!

As for who was inside the car, they didn’t have the energy to think about that for the time being.

Cai Youyang pulled Teacher Wu back into the shadows. All of a sudden, he felt his phone vibrate. He reckoned that the local police should be coming and quickly took it out. But before he could clearly look at the caller ID, he heard someone yell from a distance, “Big Brother! There’s two more over there!”

Cai Youyang’s hand trembled, and his phone fell to the ground. He picked it up and tried to put the caller through, but the man was already running toward them. Just as he wanted to drag Teacher Wu away to escape, he heard the roar of motorcycle engines. He raised his gaze. In the blink of an eye, several people were already on their motorcycles.

The other party’s reaction was too quick.

Cai Youyang gritted his teeth. Then all of a sudden, he released his grip on Teacher Wu and whispered, “Don’t talk later. Just watch me.”

Teacher Wu watched Cai Youyang walk toward the group of people, sweating and worried. But he didn’t speak and only silently followed Cai Youyang.

Cai Youyang swaggered to the street lamp. Several people who had just stepped on the accelerator were stunned. Where did this guy come from?

Their leader, Big Brother, wore shades and a baseball cap that was tilted over his head, covering most of his face. He weighed the fire ax in his hand as he watched Cai Youyang gradually approach. In a flippant manner, he yelled, “Hey, this car yours?”

Cai Youyang coldly said, “You new here? You don’t recognize me?”

Big Brother was stunned. “Who are you? I really don’t know you.”

In a contemptuous tone, Cai Youyang said, “My sworn brother Luo Er. Never heard of him?” Luo Rang often mentioned that he used to be Xincheng’s gang leader and that people called him “Second Brother” whenever they saw him. Cai Youyang still didn’t believe it, but at this time, he just hoped that he hadn’t been bragging.

Big Brother pondered for a while before shaking his head. “Don’t know him.”

Cai Youyang: “…”

“Don’t know, ey? Then I’ll let you know.” Cai Youyang took out his phone from his pocket and pretended to call Luo Rang. But in truth, he wanted to answer Lu Feng’s call.

Seeing what he wanted to do, Big Brother suddenly came over and sent his phone flying with a slap. “I don’t give a sh*t on you are. This territory has been mine for a long time. Go get it if you have the guts.”

Cai Youyang shot a pained glance at the broken phone, but he still had to keep up the act. In a very fierce manner, he spat out, “If you have the guts, then just wait here!” Afterward, he made a show of turning around and leaving to call people over.

“Something’s wrong, Big Brother,” shouted the same person who divulged his and Teacher Wu’s location. He continued, “They’re not the same as us.”

Big Brother said, “You don’t say! How are we on the same side?”

“That’s not what I mean. I meant that they look like teachers!”

Cai Youyang stared at the person speaking, face void of any emotion. But on the inside, he felt speechless. Was this a pair of all-seeing eyes or something? To think that he could glean their profession.

Big Brother originally believed Cai Youyang. But hearing what was said, he rubbed his chin. “Cultured, you mean.” As he thought of this, he suddenly frowned and yelled, “You’re not allowed to leave!”

Cai Youyang’s scalp grew numb. He turned back, only barely managing a steely expression. He was already half-dead inside. He figured that it was probably too late to beg for mercy. He glanced all around out of the corners of his eyes, wanting to find a chance to escape. Then he saw someone on the driver’s seat of Teacher Wu’s car whose head was covered in blood. He lay completely still on the car seat. Who knew whether he was still alive or not?

Cai Youyang almost tossed aside his dignity and begged for mercy. Fortunately, sirens rang in the air at this time.

“Sh*t, the police are coming!” Big Brother, who had been acting like a fiend just now, dropped the fire ax. He turned around and jumped onto a motorcycle. “Run!”

With that, the vicious gang scattered like birds.

More than a dozen motorcycles roared away. Within the next few minutes, flashing blue and red lights appeared in front of Cai Youyang. His tough front drained away in an instant, and his legs softened. He could barely stand.

Teacher Wu hurried over to support him.

When Cai Youyang heard urgent footsteps, he raised his head to point the police in the direction those gang members had escaped to. But instead, he saw the person that he was most familiar with.

His tears were ready to fall. That was too scary. If he and Teacher Wu hadn’t gone out to buy drinks, they would be the ones lying inside the car right now.

“Lu Feng,” he whispered, voice choked with sobs. He subconsciously reached out for Lu Feng, but behind him were many policemen. He could only keep a handle on his emotions.

“The murderers are a local gang. They ran away to the east,” he said, pointing at the direction where they fled.

Lu Feng walked toward Cai Youyang’s direction but didn’t come over. He restrained his anxiety and impatience and arranged the division of work on-site.”Xiao Zhou, go after them.”

“Yes, sir.” Xiao Zhou took some people with him and gave chase.

“Wei Qing, go check that man’s condition.”

Another tall and slender policeman in a white lab coat walked to the side of the car and touched the injured man’s neck. “Alive.” Relieved, he had the assistant forensic examiner bring the medicine box and administrate first aid to the injured man.

Lu Feng glanced over and noticed the injured man’s huge bulge underneath his clothes. A faint frown formed on his face as some thoughts flashed through his mind. But he didn’t verbalize these thoughts. He asked his fellow policemen to dial 120 and investigate the vicinity. He then approached Cai Youyang, lowered his head, and briefly asked with great restraint, “How are you? His face revealed nothing, but Cai Youyang could sense his concern and worry.

Cai Youyang wanted to jump into his arms, but he held back. He shook his head and said, “I’m fine. But that man…”

Without making any sound or movement, Lu Feng scanned his entire body from head to toe again and again. It was only after making sure Cai Youyang had no surface injuries that he slightly relaxed. “He’s fine, just unconscious. Do you know him?”

Cai Youyang turned to Teacher Wu, who shook his head. He then replied, “We don’t know him.”

“I’m guessing he’s a thief. Go see whether he’s hidden any of your things,” said Lu Feng as he tugged at Cai Youyang’s hand, seeming to take him to the car.

Lu Feng felt the cold sweat on his hand but didn’t let go. Instead, he wrapped that clammy hand with his own warm and dry hand.
