He was a teacher, Cai Youyang thought to himself. He couldn’t be stumped by a student’s question. His mind turning and whirling, he quick-wittedly thought of something.

Cai Youyang said, “The topic of reproduction is handled by Teacher Wu. Don’t rob Teacher Wu of his homework.”

The students asked in surprise, “Teacher Wu is already a teacher. He still needs to do homework?”

“The thing is, there’s no standard answer to this question. Teacher Wu himself wants to know whether he was doing good or not. He will tell you in your homeroom class. If you understand what he says, then your question will be answered.”

As the students suddenly saw the light, Cai Youyang wiped his cold sweat. Having the gift of gab was very important too.

At this critical moment, deception was key.

A student raised their hand, “Teacher Wu, is what Teacher Cai said true?”

Cai Youyang turned his head in horror and saw Teacher Wu behind him.

Cai Youyang: “…”

Teacher Wu flashed a smile. “Teacher Cai spoke well.”

The student ohh-ed.

Cai Youyang secretly breathed out for fear that the students still had questions. He didn’t dare to stay any longer and hurried off, returning to his office space to check the students’ homework. After finishing his work, he packed up his things in preparation to go home. He was about to leave when Teacher Wu came up to him.

Teacher Wu said, “Teacher Cai, you’re going home?”

“It’s almost 7 o’clock. If I don’t go now, I’ll miss the bus,” replied Cai Youyang.

“I’ll send you back,” said Teacher Wu. “I want to thank you for supporting me.”

Cai Youyang waved his hand in the air, feeling embarrassed. “I didn’t do anything. Teacher Wu, you’re too courteous.”

Teacher Wu went to his own desk and took his car keys. He then asked Cai Youyang, “Let’s go?”

Cai Youyang felt embarrassed. “My house isn’t along the same route as yours.”

Teacher Wu dragged Cai Youyang away. “Come on now.” He didn’t give Cai Youyang a chance to refuse.

Cai Youyang was baffled by his resolute attitude, but he still got into the car with him. They’ve been colleagues for a year, so he trusted Teacher Wu’s character. He just didn’t know why Teacher Wu was acting weird.

Sure enough, when they were on the road, Teacher Wu spoke, “Let’s go to Chaoyang Orphanage first. I have to get something from there.”

“Chaoyang Orphanage is in the north, my house is in the south, while your house is in the west,” said Cai Youyang. “Tell me what you want me to do, Teacher Wu, or I’ll feel scared.”

Teacher Wu thought about it. “Then I won’t conceal it from you.” He had already kidnapped Cai Youyang in his car. It wouldn’t be good to hide it from him at this point. Truthfully, he said, “I’ve made an agreement with the orphanage’s cleaner auntie to get ahold of their monitoring data.”

Cai Youyang zeroed in on the word “monitoring”. “You think there’s something wrong with the orphanage?”

Teacher Wu declined to comment. He said, “Just wait for me outside.”

Cai Youyang ignored him. “If there’s nothing wrong with the orphanage,” he reasoned to himself, “why would you need to get the monitoring data through the cleaning staff? The most likely problems with an orphanage should be child abuse or maybe corruption like embezzlement or shortage of food, clothing, and other daily necessities. And since you can get in touch with the cleaning staff, you must’ve been tracking them for a long time. The cleaner is willing to give you the monitoring data but had you come to the orphanage to get it. It must not be very safe. Therefore, you suspect there’s fraud going on, but you’re not resigned to just let it be. And so you’re now here.”

Teacher Wu stepped on the brake and parked the car along the side of the road, before saying, “You’re right. That’s why I asked you to come with me. If I don’t come out of the orphanage after 15 minutes, call the police for me. Tell them that I’m dying and that I need rescuing.”

Cai Youyang asked, “I’m not even strong enough to restrain a chicken. Why did you choose me?”

With a smile, Teacher Wu said, “Not many people aren’t afraid of trouble like you.”

Cai Youyang again asked, “Why not call the police? The police can come investigate, whether it’s child abuse or corruption. This is their profession, and they wouldn’t be scared of danger either.”

Teacher Wu had always been a laid-back person. But this time, a slightly bitter expression crossed his face. “You think I didn’t? he said. “But the local police station didn’t investigate or file a case and just kicked me out. I dug around here a few times, and then some gangsters came to interrogate me.”

Cai Youyang said, Are you sure there’s a problem here?”

Teacher Wu nodded his head. “When I did volunteer work at the orphanage, I saw a child being beaten up with my very own eyes. Although the beating wasn’t harsh, the child cried very badly. I paid special attention before I left. The children didn’t dare come into contact with other people, partly because they were timid and partly because they were injured and afraid of pain. They didn’t let anyone touch them.”

“Even if there’s monitoring, those things may not have been captured. Let’s call the police.”

Teacher Wu stared at Cai Youyang, baffled. “The police won’t take care of it. What’s to be done?”

Cai Youyang shook his head. He took out his phone, opened his list of contacts, searched for the one named “Officer Lu,” and dialed the number.

On the other end, Lu Feng picked up. “Teacher Cai? I won’t go home for dinner tonight. You eat by yourself.” As he was talking, he was still looking through various files and records.

But Cai Youyang said, “I want to call the police.”

Lu Feng: “…” After setting the files down and gaining an understanding of the situation with the orphanage, he let Cai Youyang report the location to him, before calling the local police station to dispatch some men.

When he heard Cai Youyang say that Chaoyang Orphanage might be in cahoots with the local criminal groups, he grew worried that the officers from the local police station wouldn’t be enough. So he called Cai Youyang up again to ask about the situation in more detail.

But as soon as the call was accepted, he heard a loud noise, seeming to be the sound of collision.

Lu Feng turned around. “Xiao Zhou!”

Because his cry sounded incredibly urgent, Xiao Zhou subconsciously set aside his box meal and stood at attention. “Here!”

“Don’t eat yet. There’s a case,” said Lu Feng in a grave voice, already stepping out of the office.
