Chapter 33

Kwa-ang!

With a loud crack, the window that had been closed tightly along with the lightning bolt burst open, and a cold rainstorm poured in along with the fierce wind.

“Mom.”

I stared blankly at the man in front of me, spitting out words as dry as reading a Korean textbook.

“Surprise.”

I added another word, but once again, there was no response.

The man, who had chewed up all my words thoroughly, silently handed me a white pill and withdrew the syringe that had been stuck in my hand.

Time passed unknowingly, intoxicated by the medicine to ease the pain, for a month.

And today marks two months.

“Doctor.”

I’ve faced this man every day for the past two months.

“Isn’t it time to stop building walls?”

As I touched his hair with my fingers, the man suddenly raised his head and cursed with his eyes.

His eyes, although large and round, with puppy-like corners, were tempting enough to make me want to cry at least once.

As if he could read my thoughts, the man glanced anxiously and then bowed his head deeply.

“Could you play with me for a bit?”

“……”

“I feel like I’m going to die of boredom now.”

Being stuck in the room every day. The first thing that caught my eye every morning, noon, and night was this man.

His ecstatic blond hair and sea-blue eyes added to my interest.

And his youthful atmosphere, looking barely twenty, also contributed.

I thought he would be perfect for gathering outside information with his well-groomed appearance. But that thought shattered soon enough.

“People don’t die of boredom.”

It’s been only two months.

Precisely, two months and ten days.

During that not-so-short period, the man maintained a distance sharp enough to believe even for a first meeting.

“…You don’t understand Korean?”

Except for the main characters from the original work, most of them speak English or Chinese. I already knew the language before, so I had no trouble communicating in this world.

But strangely, Angel knew how to speak Korean, but I wanted to believe that he hadn’t mastered the implicit meanings yet.

Without a response, the man focused on attaching a bandage to my hand.

I asked the same question again in Chinese and English, but there was still no answer. I rolled the pill in my hand, determined.

Today, I’ll break down that wall.

“Doctor.”

Before the man could turn his head, I grabbed his hand tightly.

The man looked at me with widened eyes.

The man’s white hands were rough, unlike his appearance or profession.

“It’s a delicate job, but is it okay to use it like this?”

I smiled and let go, and once again, he cursed with his eyes.

It was right after he turned away and faced the neatly arranged medications.

Crash!

The glass bottle that had been perched at the edge hit the man’s arm and fell to the ground. The man startled and bent over to the floor.

At that moment, a black card fell onto the shattered glass pieces from the man’s pocket.

The black card had the symbol of Baekcheon embossed in gold on its black background.

The symbol of Baekcheon isn’t something you see everywhere. I clearly remembered what this card was.

The second meeting of Baek Ha-won and Yugyeom, or rather after the death of Yeon-byeol, was at Baekcheon.

Yugyeom pretended to betray Utopia and came to Baekcheon, claiming he would hand over information about Utopia. And the first thing he searched for upon arriving at Baekcheon was this card.

A card that can open all the doors in Square.

It wasn’t something a doctor who had entered Square just two months ago would have.

Tension was evident in his eyes. I could see the strain on his jaw.

I smiled as I picked up the card. Then, I grabbed the lapel of the white gown he was wearing.

His head leaned closer to me.

My smiling face reflected on the lenses of his glasses above his puzzled face.

“Doctor.”

I put the card into the gown’s pocket and winked.

“I think you just got caught by me.”

I straightened the flipped lapel and noticed the name embroidered in thread.

“Isn’t that so?”

As I brushed my finger over the name, the man’s body trembled slightly.

His trembling pupils followed my hand, then fixed on the sound of laughter that reached us, finally locking onto me.

“Angel.”

The man swallowed hard. He didn’t even think about shaking off my hand holding him as he failed to hide his restlessness.

I felt somewhat puzzled by his innocence, but I thought it was fortunate.

It was from the original work that Baek Ha-won had planted spies here before the Baekcheon raid.

Originally, Baek Ha-won had caught and killed them all after Yeon-byeol was kidnapped, but they somehow managed to survive without being caught.

“It’s not your real name, is it?”

I grabbed and released the new white lapel forcefully. The man, with a frightened face, took a step back.

As I got up from the bed, closing the distance between us, he took another step back, and I approached further.

Eventually, his back touched the wall, and tears began to well up in his large eyes.

“Would you like to tell me your name, or something else?”

As I approached, I swept away ANGEL once more. Reluctantly, tears fell onto my hand as he finally dropped, and a tear rolled down my palm.

I looked down at the white pill bottle in my hand. There was nothing written on it, not even a name or ingredient label, just as white as the pills themselves.

“It’s a sleeping pill. It’s quite strong to deal with such a severe injury, but not excessive. There are no side effects…”

A sleeping pill?

I needed it when I couldn’t fall asleep because of the pain, but why would they prescribe it so frequently now?

I could dig deeper, but for now, I obediently pushed the thought aside as the clock signaled midnight. Stepping outside the room, I watched Angel’s staggering figure.

Was it necessary to set more traps? You could just see for yourself in person.

“You set the trap well…”

I squeezed the pill bottle in my hand tightly, looking at the empty bed beside the closet.

The reason I had to sleep quietly.

Intuition is kicking in. There’s definitely something going on.

Creak-

At that moment, the door that didn’t seem like it would open, opened.

Wow. He really came. He really did…!

Holding onto my pounding chest, I waited for the indistinct figure to enter my field of vision.

The footsteps quickened, and then a black shadow appeared within sight. Leaning forward to the familiar silhouette, I narrowed my eyes.

“…?”

The moonlight streamed onto his face through the window.

Eyes darker than the light itself. The initial recognition of him was a vague fear of the unknown.

Would I ever see someone with eyes like that in my original life?

I flipped the switch. Despite the sudden bright light pouring in, his eyes didn’t flinch.

“Wow.”

A sigh escaped quietly.

“I was waiting to see if there was a rat.”

The pill bottle fell from my hand and rolled to a stop in front of the black shoes. The gaze, sharper than the light, intertwined in the air.

“You’re really caught in the trap, aren’t you?”

“…?”

“Moreover, it’s a mooncalf.”

I smiled widely as I faced Baek Ha-won. His gaze shifted from my face, slowly dropping towards the pill bottle.

The eyebrows above his eyes moved slightly.

“It’s been a while, boss.”

Approaching Baek Ha-won, I reached out my hand as if to grab it, but stopped at a distance where it could be caught. He raised his head again towards me.

“Ah. Is it only me who’s been a while?”

The black pupils that captured me intensified.

“Why come like a rat at night?”

Although my heart trembled slightly in the atmosphere I faced after a long time, I quickly put on a fresh smile of victory.

“Why.”

“Surely you’re not asking why I’m awake?”

“…?”

“Boss, everything’s been exposed to me.”

The blanket held in his grip slipped off. At the same time, the distance between us crumbled.

Approaching closer, Baek Ha-won, who had been staring at me with unreadable eyes, suddenly lowered his head and laughed.

“That’s right. I’ve been caught.”

Contrary to my expectations, my mind went blank for a moment as his lips twisted up into a smile.

“Now what?”

Swallowing dry saliva at his fierce laughter, I pondered. Ah… this wasn’t supposed to happen.

Angel wasn’t Angel, he was a devil? Baek Ha-won should have warned me he was coming.

Looking at the eyes gleaming like a predator about to tear its prey apart, I hastily spoke up.

“If you were going to visit a patient, you should have brought a gift.”

Facing my audacious gaze, Baek Ha-won blinked his eyes slowly. His head tilted as if lost in thought, and then an unexpected answer came through his parted lips.

“Do you want something?”

At his response, my frozen mind quickly started to turn as if illuminated by a light.

Recovering my body over the past two months, I had been constantly thinking.

I wasn’t dying immediately, but what about the future?

“Teach me how to shoot.”

I needed to find a way to survive in this world.

“I want to become the top of Baekcheon like you, boss.”

To avoid death in the fate that had turned into a void after Yeon-byeol’s death.

Baek Ha-won’s gaze became mysterious.

It had been 10 years since I entered Baekcheon, now with the change of seasons, it was exactly 11 years.

During that long time, Yeon-byeol, who had never shown any interest in such things, suddenly wanting to learn how to shoot might seem strange.

“A gun…”

Baek Ha-won scanned me up and down, then reached out his hand.

His long fingers intertwined with mine as they clasped my hand. In an instant, my body stiffened from the heat enveloping me.

“It might be too much.”

His fingers slowly swept away from my hand. His intense gaze lingered on the tip of his fingers.

“Your hand will be ruined.”
