And Lann was right. The first battle ended rather unspectacularly. The girl fought to her best, and she was indeed strong and fast, but unfortunately, in his full form, the elementary school boy overpowered her easily.

In addition, the girl's soul power was weak. She had the power of ice, yet she was unable to land even one attack on the boy, who moved so fast that some of the spectators had trouble seeing him with their n.a.k.e.d eye.

And in the end, he pounced on the girl and pressed her down onto the ground. With a growl and his front paw up, he stabbed a claw into the girl's shoulder, causing the girl to cry out in pain.

"Come on! I bet on that girl!" someone from the spectators' seats yelled as he threw a stone toward the stage, which was then bounced off in midair by the invisible wall.

"Surrender!" the boy growled in an inhuman voice. He lifted his bloodied paw and threatened to hit the girl again.

"I… I surrender!" the girl cried tearfully. "Please…"

"That's… it?" Juin muttered as he looked at them. "That's not even 5 minutes…"

He could see some spectators cheering while others were cursing, having no doubt lose quite some money over the match. "Pathetic…" Juin thought while shaking his head as he looked at those a.d.u.l.ts who had just made a bet on the fight between two young school children.

"Well, she's pretty weak…" Lann said with a smile as she watched the girl's teacher rushed over to help her off the stage. When Juin turned to look at her, Lann added, "I told her parents not to send her since she's too young and weakwilled. There's no way she could win in the elimination battle. And even if she somehow got herself a place in a team, there's no way she could have survived in a harsh and foreign world. If she had strong teammates, then maybe. Even so, she would just drag them down with her… So, what's the point?"

Juin continued staring at Lann. This was the first time he heard her speak so harshly, and he was slightly taken aback by it, unsure of what to say next.

"Why?" Lann asked when she noticed the slight narrowing of his eyes.

"I…" He quickly shook his head and said, "Nothing…"

"You think that my words are harsh?"

"I think… you have your reasonings…" Juin said, slightly blushing at the idea of his thoughts being found out so easily.

Hearing him, Lann could not help but chuckle. "You are more politically correct than your teacher…"

She gave a quick glance to Tucker, who merely ignored her, and said with a sad smile, "I don't want to see more death. The Battle of the Underground Beings is a very brutal game. Sure, it helps the kids grow faster and stronger, but the cost is just too high. Every battle, we would lose at least one of our participants, and in every battle, multiple young lives were lost, all just for the sake of winning some money…"

Shaking her head, she said, "It's hard, meeting the kids, watching them grow up… and watching them die in front of you…"

As if she was trapped in some sort of unpleasant memories, her beautiful brows furrowed in and frown lines appeared on her forehead. "Excuse me…" she said as she looked at Juin with a forced smile. She then stood up before continuing, "I think I'll check out how's the other arenas are going. I'll be back before you battle…"

Juin merely nodded and watched her walk out of the arena. He then looked at his teacher with a raised eyebrow. "So…?"

Even Cyrus turned to look at Tucker with his eyes wide open. "Come on, tell us…"

Tucker knew what they wanted to ask, so even though he did not look at them, he still answered, "Her first student died during one of the Battle of the Underground Beings."

"Oh…" Juin and Cyrus glanced at each other, feeling a little bad for the woman now.

"It was a long, long time ago. Before you were even born… She sent him over… I think he was 13 years old then. I heard that he did not want to join and that he was very afraid, but she convinced him to go, telling him that it would be great for him… After all, that year's Battle was just a simple battle. A staged battlefield. There was barely any danger that she could perceive. But he never came back from it."

Tucker heard soft gasping voices, but he continued, "The battle could only be stopped if a participant surrenders… But he could not. The Dark Night Clan's kid made sure of that… We watched as her student's tongue was cut out of his mouth, and his limbs were cut off, before his head rolled on the bloody stage…"

Hearing his description, Juin shivered. "M… Ms. Lann must have been shocked!"

"It's just life…" Tucker said, without even opening his eyes. Waving a hand in air nonchalantly, he added, "As a supernatural being who craves for strength, death is just something that we have to learn to accept early on. Lann, of course, knew it as well. It was her student's fault, for not being strong enough…"

"But that's--" Juin wanted to say something, but Tucker interrupted him.

"If you want a long life, then just stay at the sideline forever. When someone steps on you, just be quiet and let them do it… But if you want strength, you have to take chances, even if it might lead to a gruesome death."

Juin did not say anything. He looked at the young boy who had just won the first round and was now standing next to his teacher with a towel wrapped around his waist.

On the young boy's face, there was a cruel smirk as he looked at the wounded girl, who was now being cared for by her teacher.

"Survival of the fittest…" Juin suddenly blurted out.

"Yeah…" Tucker finally opened his eyes and looked at his student. "Survival of the fittest. On the battlefield, there's no men or women, girls or boys. Just two people who both want to live on and move to the next round."

Juin nodded. This world just seemed crueler and crueler the longer he stayed in it. But at the same time, he could not pull himself out.

"The next one should be Saville, right?" Tucker asked, looking down at the paper in Juin's hands.

Juin nodded.

"Watch how he fights..." Tucker said with a stern expression. "That kid might be arrogant, but he's no weakling..."
