Three months passed in the blink of an eye. Winter passed and spring arrived. According to time, there was only over two months before they had to leave the Clear Wilderness.

During these three months, Shu Yu and Fu Wang kept living in that spacious stone cave, but aside from spending time together in the first month, afterwards the time they spent together wasn’t much. It wasn’t that they didn’t want to be together, but Shu Yu and Fu Wang both had things that they had to do, thus the days they spent separated increased.

Shu Yu came across a swordsmanship manual by chance. At the beginning she thought it would be more convenient to have a usable weapon close by, and then also because she grew up watching movie adaptations of the novels written by the great novelists Jin Yong1 and Gu Long2 She decided to learn sword arts due to the influence of their sword masters, such as Ximen Chuixie, as well.

Afterwards when she truly started training, Shu Yu found herself mesmerized by the finesse of sword arts. She diligently practiced the sword every day. Originally, she would go out daily and look for sparring partners, and now she would wake up even earlier in the mornings, only returning late at night and sometimes even spending the whole night outside.

When Shu Yu first arrived at this world, she was fragile as a whole, like a frightened bird. Fu Wang sometimes thought he would scare her if he raised his voice even a little. But now, with the improvement of her abilities and having experienced many situations and fights, her whole body was now shrouded with a layer of sharpness. All along she has worked very hard, plus her body was still that of Tianfeng Jinyu’s, and in less than a year she had regained the power of Tianfeng Jinyu at her peak.

But it wasn’t enough. Tianfeng Jinyu was the best amongst the younger generation of the demon race, but each Clan had Elders who haven’t appeared in the outside world, and there was no guarantee they wouldn’t be provoked into acting out if her circumstances were exposed. This is why Shu Yu could only vigorously set new goals for herself.

Tianfeng Jinyu preferred large scale attacks that were brutal and bloody. Naturally, Shu Yu wasn’t accustomed to that. So, in terms of techniques she has slowly figured out a path that suited her. And perhaps she truly possessed some talent in the ways of the sword, but in a short amount of time she learnt to deal very powerful sword strikes. Clearly, she had already surpassed the former Tian Feng Jinyu.

When it came to domineering cruelty, Shu Yu wasn’t as good as Tianfeng Jinyu; but when it came to meticulousness and composure, that lunatic Tian Feng Jinyu couldn’t measure up to Shu Yu. Even with the same face, no one would be able to mistake the two. And as time trickled by, Shu Yu’s own qualities started showing through and the difference between the two became larger and larger.

Fu Wang was someone who witnessed Shu Yu’s change first-hand, and he had also taught Shu Yu and gave her a lot of advice and guidance. In the beginning, when Shu Yu vulnerably cried in front of him, Fu Wang genuinely thought Shu Yu wasn’t suited for a life of fighting against others. All the way until now, the path had become a hundred times tougher, but Shu Yu never showed that weak side again. On the contrary, her tenacity surprised him greatly and the pace of her growth was beyond his expectations.

Not only was the current Shu Yu capable of reigning in her initial fear and confidently, calmly, and expertly battle against with others, but she has also gown addicted to cultivation practice that would make her stronger, she has already become an exceptionally outstanding person.

But regardless of how much she grew, there were some things that didn’t change at all. She didn’t like killing. She didn’t get caught up in blood and manslaughter. She wasn’t arrogant nor conceited. She didn’t let herself get blinded by her growth in power and remained earnest and down-to-earth.

Aside from becoming more dazzling, Shu Yu was still the same Shu Yu, but Fu Wang was no longer the Fu Wang of before.

Fu Wang was busier compared to Shu Yu, often disappearing for a day or two, sometimes even vanishing for four or five days. Although every time he went out, he would always leave a note explaining what he went to do so Shu Yu wouldn’t worry. Aside from knowing he wasn’t limited anymore by his physique and constitution, that his cultivation was akin to a thousand miles a day, or that his specialties like mechanic traps or refining pills were still being practiced, Shu Yu didn’t know anything else.

From a certain standpoint, being far less together than apart let Shu Yu slowly get used to the changes in their relationship. She would get anxious when she saw him, and she would miss him when she didn’t see him. Other than when immersing herself in cultivation, Shu Yu often couldn’t help wondering where Fu Wang was and what he was doing.

As for Fu Wang, he did not dare let Shu Yu know what he was doing. Was he supposed to tell Shu Yu he had become a Devil that devoured the flesh and blood of demons?

Leaving aside the matter of Shu Yu possibly being frightened and distancing herself from him, he wouldn’t dare tell Shu Yu on the mere fact that he had become a Devil due to that so-called “Pure Golden Lotus”, otherwise, what would she think? With her personality, she would probably feel responsible for it and feel terrible about it. Why bother adding to her troubles?

Maybe someday she would know, but in any case, he would postpone that day as long as he could.

Although Fu Wang knew he would change after falling into depravity, he still underestimated the effects of becoming a Devil. Whether it was his thoughts becoming more obsessive and dangerous, or his new cravings for the flesh and blood of demons, he was being changed little by little. But even though he was aware of this he couldn’t do anything about it. He could only suppress himself and make himself appear the same as in the past.

He didn’t care for the demons that died by his hands. Those who want to kill him must prepare to be killed by him. But in his heart, he was secretly worried for Shu Yu, worried Shu Yu would notice this form of his, worried she would fear his craving for his kin’s flesh and stay away from him. He was especially worried her distancing herself from him would make him susceptible to the devil’s nature, causing him to harm her in the end.

Right now he was still rational, but what about later? Could it be possible that one day, he would completely and utterly become a malicious Devil and forget the feelings inside him, and end up regarding Shu Yu as another nutritious meal?

The stronger he became and the more he improved, the deeper his transformation into a Devil. At the same time his strength increased, he was also being altered and eroded by devil qi.

Fu Wang wasn’t certain whether he would end up becoming a Devil like in the legends — lacking all seven emotions, seeking to slaughter by nature alone, with no concept of kindness whatsoever. He was only certain that the assimilation into a Devil was being faster than he had expected, the situation was also more severe.

Fu Wang sat leaning against a wall, his expression dark and grim, there was blood still smeared on his mouth and his feet were surrounded with mangled limbs. Blood was splattered everywhere inside the cave, some places were already turning slightly black. The small cave was reeking with the smell of blood, as if it were hell itself.

A formation had been set here, capable of disorienting the mind and drawing out the malice deep inside one’s hearts. Any who stepped inside the formation would lose their rationality, attacking others or harming themselves, and those demons who died within the formation, well, their flesh and blood became nourishment for Fu Wang’s cultivation.

Indeed, Fu Wang possessed a naturally gifted intelligence. Those difficult and complex formations would be easily deciphered by him in a short amount of time, this had become one of his assets against enemies. Now that he was a Devil, his techniques would leave traces that would be easily recognized by others, so most of the time he still relied on his specialties and underhanded tactics to achieve his desired goal.

The cave was silent.

Fu Wang didn’t stop until he finished converting all absorbed flesh and blood into devil qi.

As he slightly bended while he moved to stand, a small pouch fell from inside his robes. Fu Wang picked up the small pouch and rubbed it in his hand, his frosty expression eased up and the thick darkness in his eyes also slowly dispersed.

Shu Yu gave this to him a few days ago. She said nothing at the time, just ducked her head and walking outside after delivering it, and when Fu Wang opened for a look, he realized it was locks of hair tied with a red string.

Most of the time she was dense, looking like she was oblivious and clueless, but sometimes she would do things like this. They would be so unexpected and make him feel delighted and warm, making him truly feel that he was dearly loved by her.

This kind of Shu Yu, how could he allow himself any opportunity to hurt her?

As Fu Wang stood amidst the blood with a soft gaze, he pocketed away the small pouch in the lapel near his chest.

Today, Shu Yu came home unusually early. As she entered, she saw a familiar figure, his back to her as he stood in front of a table fiddling with something.

They haven’t seen each other in five days. Suddenly seeing that Fu Wang was back, Shu Yu was overjoyed and quickly walked over, her eyes shining brightly as she called out a single “Fu Wang.”

Having heard her footsteps beforehand, Fu Wang turned his head and looked at her with a smile in his eyes. “Xiao-Yu, I’m back.”

“Are you hurt?” Shu Yu stood in front of him and pulled his sleeves for a look. She herself would occasionally get injured while cultivating outside, and each time she didn’t dare let Fu Wang know, it would get better soon after she secretly smeared some ointment anyways. But nine times out of ten Fu Wang would somehow find out, and it would result in Fu Wang frowning and gravely smearing the ointment for her.

As a result, Shu Yu was extra concerned about Fu Wang being injured outside, but after all these times, she has never seen Fu Wang coming back with injuries. Perhaps he was injured but he wouldn’t mention it, and she didn’t have his attention to detail so she couldn’t tell. And it was too embarrassing to directly paw his clothes apart, so she could only trust his word and believe he wasn’t injured.

“I am not.” As expected, Fu Wang repeated those words. But Shu Yu felt his expression didn’t seem to look good, he looked slightly pale.

Saying that, Fu Wang didn’t wait for Shu Yu to ask again, he took her hand and placed a branch with peach blossoms on it. He said gently, “I saw peach blossoms in bloom on my way home today. I don’t know why, but I suddenly wanted to bring it back to show you.”

When he was outside, no matter what kind of interesting thing he saw, his first reaction was to think Shu Yu could like it. With those thoughts in mind, when he saw the branch of flowers in full bloom on his way home, impulse took over him and when he came back to his senses, he had already snapped the flower branch and was carefully protecting it as he went home.

Shu Yu was very happy with the blossoms. Finally, she finally felt like they were doing normal romantic things!

Because short separations outweighed newlywed feelings or something like that, she got excited and went forward to hug Fu Wang’s neck and kissed him on the lips.

It was too late to think about retreating. Fu Wang hugged her and returned her kiss, though of course it was much heavier. The two leaned together intimately for a bit, then Fu Wang released her lips, and as he stroked her hair, he suddenly said, “Xiao-Yu, I want to give you something.”

Shu Yu’s brain suddenly recalled an inappropriate saying —— “I want to give you the chromosome passed down my family.” And her expression turned a bit strange.

But things didn’t progress in the direction that she was thinking, it was in fact very peaceful. Fu Wang brought her to the bedroom and pulled open his robe, revealing… a complex, black formation pattern on his chest, where his heart was.

“I planted a formation inside my body, right here.” Fu Wang said with a smile and took out black ring with strange patterns on it and put it on Shu Yu’s finger. Shu Yu had mentioned that in her world two parties who got married would gift each other rings, that’s why when he was making this, he crafted it in the form of a ring.

“This ring can only be removed by Xiao-Yu, there’s also something inside the ring, and only Xiao-Yu can open this ring.” Fu Wang kissed Shu Yu’s finger, the one with the ring, and gently said, “If someday I end up bullying Xiao-Yu, Xiao-Yu only needs to open the ring, take out what’s inside and destroy it.”

“What will happen to you if it’s destroyed?” Shu Yu asked curiously, looking at the patterns on the ring that were similar to the formation symbols on Fu Wang’s heart.

“I die,” Fu Wang replied. He didn’t sound like he was joking.

Shu Yu: “… I don’t want it, why are you giving me this, it sounds a bit scary.” Saying this, Shu Yu wanted to take it off, but was stopped by Fu Wang.

“Xiao-Yu, wear this, do not take it off,” Fu Wang stressed as he stared into Shu Yu’s eyes.

Seeing Fu Wang being so insistent, Shu Yu could only agree to it. But no matter what was said, anyways, there was no way she would straight out kill Fu Wang just because he bullied her. Who knew, maybe he was using this to confess his love. The more she thought about it the more she was convinced this was the case, so Shu Yu stopped dwelling on this matter, touching the ring while beaming.

Naturally, she had no idea how much of Fu Wang’s painstaking effort was spent on that small ring and the formation inside his body. The thing inside that ring was a key created by Fu Wang that, if destroyed, was the equivalent of Fu Wang killing himself.

In the future when his assimilation into a Devil got worse, normal wounds will not work, it would be difficult for even Shu Yu to kill him, by then only he would be able to kill himself as fast as possible. Moreover, as long as Shu Yu wore this ring, Fu Wang will not be able to hurt her; if Fu Wang attacked her, he would be the one bearing the brunt of the damage.

As early as when he had just become a Devil, Fu Wang had already been thinking of this. He kept researching ancient tomes and he experimented for a long time before finding the most reliable method, and then its actual creation took just as long.

As long as this ring existed, no matter what he ended up becoming, he will never be able to hurt his precious Xiao-Yu.

Chapter Description: Saw a flower in full bloom on the way home, and suddenly thought of you.
