“Aaaaaagh!”

Clarisse caught on fire, rolled, and rolled upon reaching the abandoned temple. Even so, she desperately used water-based healing magic.

“Ah! Damn— damn it!”

Swearing and screaming erupted together. Three people embracing… … It couldn’t be called a corpse yet, but weeping tears burst out at the figure that would soon become a corpse.

“No, Frisia!”

The magic was already prepared. Assuming the worst-case scenario, everything was prepared, but moving with three people was unexpected.

Clarisse screamed at her familiar.

“Portion! Bring the potion!”

It didn’t matter how much money it cost. From Clarisse’s point of view, she was the friend who saved her life and the first friend she ever had.

Dozens of Familiars, shaped like winged salamanders, opened the caps of the potions and poured them over their bodies. The pouring potions soaked their bodies like rain in the monsoon season.

But the other two already seemed unlikely to survive.

Frisia, too, couldn’t even open her eyes, barely able to breathe.

Her hair was completely burnt off, and she seemed blinded, but she was still the Duchess. Since the Duke said he cared for Frisia, as long as she could breathe, he would restore her somehow.

“Ugh… … auh… … .”

Clarisse crawled to Frisia with her burnt body. She intended to hear what she was trying to say to her, but the others who hugged her were in the way.

They were not important for her; she only cared about Frisia, but she was afraid that she would be hurt if she forcefully removed them.

“What? What are you trying to say? You— you’ll be fine. You don’t have to tell me now… … .”

Clarisse was a mess, shedding tears, weeping, and saying anything that came to mind.

She was a sorceress but had few healing abilities; her skill was only marginal. Her expertise was magic tools, where she showed a most extraordinary talent.

She was deeply devastated that she could not save her friend with her own magic.

She has already sent one of her familiars to a nearby temple. If the priest had heard the news, he would be running here, but it was questionable whether Frisia could hold out until then.

-She’s not talking to you, baby.

Fingertips, with their pink warmth, wiped the tears from Clarisse’s cheeks. Clarisse blinked at the presence he had never seen before.

‘What is this? Spirit?’

―That means you’ll accept the contract with me, right?

The woman in the fluttering skirt looked like a child or a girl. She felt like a boy at the same time. Her long hair obscured her eyes, leaving only her nose and lips, but subtle warmth radiated.

Even the warmth could have been uncomfortable for her burnt body, but it wasn’t. His or her warmth was what made Clarisse feel thirsty.

She had an earnest desire for more contact.

-Oh… You’re asking too much. These two people, um… … .

At the gesture of the being looking at the two in silence, Clarisse realized what Frisia was asking of that ‘spirit.’

‘Please don’t do that! It’s enough for just one!’

She wanted to dissuade her, but Clarisse could do nothing but just watch. The presence of that ‘spirit’ was so enormous.

‘Prehaps… … . maybe this… … .’

―Yes, I got it. Since you’re the first contractor in a thousand years, I’ll accept that level of fuss. But it requires a lot of strength and is tricky to accomplish.

It’s hard in your current state, the ‘spirit’ seemed to scold her. And the spirit stretched out its arms and embraced the three intertwined people.

A pale pink light flashed in an instant. At the sight of them disappearing without a trace, Clarisse collapsed. Belatedly, she realized that the burn marks on her body had also disappeared. She was cured.

Who was that? What kind of spirit was that?

“Th—the spirit king of life… … .”

She only knew of the legend of such a spirit from reading an ancient magic book. Clarisse stared blankly at the stain made with the potion.

A significant scorch mark with soot was visible underneath the traces and stains of potions. That seemed to tell her that what had just transpired was not an illusion.
