Shi Cheng was standing at the door, just wondering how to get rid of the mother daughter pair when he suddenly heard the commotion in the room. There was a loud shriek and sounds of banging. And just like that, all his hard work had gone up in smoke. Both exasperated and amused, he turned to re-enter and saw Liu Sen circling the table, running. He was still holding a snack in his mouth, while Liu Xu’er was chasing him from behind. With a shrill cry, she kept calling, “This brat is too much…. This brat is too much….”

Mrs Yu and Xiaolian had thought the room was empty! Now that they suddenly heard so much noise coming from inside, they all went to stand at the door to look. They were immediately struck dumb.

Shi Cheng saw that Liu Xu’er was unable to catch Liu Sen and couldn’t resist stepping forward. Smiling, he asked, “How did he make you angry? Tell me, and I can help you beat him up!”

Liu Xu’er pointed at Liu Sen and said, “Catch him! Today, I definitely need to teach him a good lesson!”

When Shi Cheng came in, he smiled and said, “Xu’er, Senzi has been caught…. What just happened? What did he say?”

Liu Lin had a firm hold on Liu Sen and came in as well. He too smiled and asked, “That’s right, what did he say to make you jump? What made you so angry?”

Everyone of them pointedly ignored Mrs Yu and her daughter. No matter how thick skinned Mrs Yu was, she could tell that the family wasn’t paying them any mind. There was no way she could ask them for work. Feeling rather embarrassed, she could only pull Xiaolian and leave.

Xiaolian was still looking back as she left. Everyone in the Liu family was rather decent looking. She had never noticed before….

Shi Cheng and Liu Lin both grabbed hold of Liu Sen and entered the house. Both of them were asking what had happened, but Liu Xu’er wasn’t about to share! She immediately jumped up, went over and twisted Liu Sen’s ear. Entering the house, she said, “Spill! Who taught you to say that? It seems you are learning all sorts of awful things instead of putting your energies into your schoolwork… Seems I need to sort you out!”

Liu Sen cried out pitifully, then said, “Who needs to teach me that? Didn’t we just hear it…. What, did you think I wouldn’t be able to hear just because you covered my ears? You’re just deceiving yourself!”

Liu Xu’er gasped, “Now you’re lecturing me?!”

Shi Cheng was curious, “Just what did he say?”

Liu Xu’er turned to him, annoyed, “None of your business!”

Having met with such a fierce response, Shi Cheng could only rub his nose and sit back down. Liu Sen laughed at his misery, but Liu Xu’er immediately tightened her grip on his ear. He gave a wail and cried, “Spare me!”

While they were all fooling around, He shi came over alarmed. She rushed over and asked, “What’s wrong? Who’s fighting with who?!”

Liu Lin grinned, “It’s fine mum. Xu’er is playing with Senzi.”

He shi had a look inside and saw that sure enough, her two children were fooling with each other. She laughed, “And here I thought…. Oh!” Then she waved her hands and left.

When Senzi’s ears had turned all red from Liu Xu’er’s relentless tugging, he finally started to beg her to spare him, and promised never to say that again. Then Liu Xu’er released him. Liu Sen went to get a drink of water while Liu Lin shook his head in amusement and left.

Seeing that everyone was ignoring them, Mrs Yu had left long ago with her daughter.

Shi Cheng had just dragged Liu Sen to the doorway to ask, “What on earth did you say? Why did I feel that your jie was also angry at me? What does it have to do with me?”

Liu Sen nodded. Preemptively, he protected his ears with his hands and backed up a couple of steps before saying, “I just told my jie to watch you carefully, so that no one can get you drunk and sleep with you….” Then he swiftly turned tail and ran.

Shi Cheng was both exasperated and amused. He didn’t bother to chase after him, just turned and entered the house. He saw Liu Xu’er sitting on a chair, still puffed up with anger, sipping her tea, so he smiled and sat down next to her.

Liu Xu’er stared at him and pushed her seat further away, but Shi Cheng closely followed her. Liu Xu’er glared at him and said, “This is my home – all my family members are here. Anyone could suddenly enter, so you’ve to be careful.”

Shi Cheng could only sit down obediently, and not try to move any closer. After a while, he smiled and said, “You don’t have to worry. Apart from you, no one else can possibly sleep with me….”

Liu Xu’er immediately flushed a brilliant red. Choking, she moved her chair further away, “Scram. What would happen if someone saw?”

Shi Cheng naturally didn’t want to leave. He scratched his nose and was thinking of an excuse when Liu Shu entered and curiously asked, “What are the two of you doing here? Where is Senzi?”

“Ran out to play.” Shi Cheng pointed at the courtyard door. Since Liu Shu had come, he didn’t have to leave.

The three of them sat in the room chatting. After a while, He shi smiled and brought their dabomu in. With them was both He Ruyu and Liu Gao shi.

The younger generation immediately stood up to allow them to have a seat. Liu Gao shi was already smiling and holding onto them. “Just sit down. Everyone sit while we can talk! Get to know your dabomu.”

So Liu Xu’er sat back down, smiled and nodded. “That’s right, we’re not too familiar with her yet after all…. Nai, when are you and ye coming back to stay with us?”

Liu Gao shi had already discussed this with her old partner. They would stay with First till next year. Liu Gao shi knew that her granddaughter had asked the question to make her happy, but it still worked. She smiled and said, “Next year. Next year, we will stay with you for the long term!”

Liu Xu’er smiled and said, “That’s great!”

Liu Gao shi was delighted. She turned and said to First’s new wife, “Xu’er is the smartest! She’s also got the sweetest tongue. Everyone in the family loves her!”

First’s new wife was surnamed Yang, so she was known as Yang shi. Because she had just gotten married, she wasn’t familiar with the family. And now, because she was bombarded with so many new relatives, even though she was with the younger generation, she was still a little shy. Looking at how Liu Xu’er conversed with Liu Gao shi, she smiled and nodded, “That’s right. Xu’er…. I’ve heard the villagers mention you a lot. Everyone says she’s very capable. Tao’s father has also said that our Liu Tao had a lot of help from you….”

Liu Xu’er quickly waved that away, “Dabomu, please don’t mention it. We’re all a family. I just made a few suggestions, but everyone worked together.”

It was expected for Liu Xu’er to wave these compliments away, but Yang shi wanted to praise Liu Xu’er Xu’er’s modest words made her feel a bit awkward and embarrassed.

Liu Tao had just come in from outside. He too was actually rather mature, and wanted to build a good relationship with his stepmother. But because they didn’t stay together, some distance between them was natural. To expect him to just call her “mother” was rather uncomfortable for Liu Tao. Now that he saw his nai bring his stepmother in to mingle with the family and get to know everyone, he too came over to join them.

When he heard what Liu Xu’er said, he smiled and said, “Xu’er, don’t be too humble. My mother is right, I received a lot of help from you. Of course, ershu, ershen, dage, erge and Senzi were also instrumental. That’s why our lives now can be so comfortable.”

Liu Sen didn’t wait for Liu Xu’er to respond. He smiled and smacked Liu Tao, “Why are you being so courteous with your family?!”

Shi Cheng however, said, “Liu Tao, you forgot me! I am also part of the family – how could you forget me?!”

Liu Xu’er started to giggle, and the rest also started to laugh. Shi Cheng was just trying to break up the awkward moment. Now that everyone had started to laugh, Liu Tao started to feel more relaxed and Yang shi wasn’t so shy.

Liu Gao shi quickly went to pull Shi Cheng over to Yang shi. “This is Xu’er’s future husband! She will be marrying the year after in the eighth month.”

Yang shi’s face was still a little red. She quickly smiled and said, “Mum, I’ve already met. During the wedding, he greeted me….” Then she turned to Shi Cheng and smiled, “Dabomu doesn’t have much to give. I’ve just made you a pair of shoes. I hope you don’t mind this small gift.”

Shi Cheng smiled and nodded, “Thank you dabomu!”

The older generation then started to chat, but because this was clearly a visit to familiarise everyone with each other, no one left. Liu Xu’er giggled and sat on the kang nibbling her melon seeds. Shi Cheng went over to sit by her side. He smiled and said, “Give me a few.”

Liu Xu’er then passed him some.

Sitting at the side, Yang shi observed them. She found the situation rather strange. This girl…. If she was anyone else, how could she sit in front of a crowd and talk to her future husband? Shouldn’t she be avoiding him? Xu’er however, looked completely at ease with this. But this way seemed to be better.

Yang shi straightened her body and tried to push aside her bashfulness. She didn’t want to appear more timid than the younger generation – that would be too embarrassing.

Liu Tao came over and took some melon seeds for himself. Then he started to chat with Shi Cheng and Liu Shu, looking completely natural. He really looked like he was one of them. He said more with them than he did in his own home. Yang shi resolved to herself that she needed to spend more time with him. She couldn’t continue to allow them to be so distant.

Liu Xu’er suddenly heard Liu Gao shi and He shi try to figure out when He Ruyu would give birth. It seemed she would be delivering in the fifth month, next year. That was good timing – it wouldn’t be too hot or cold. Delighted and surprised, she dashed over to He Ruyu and asked quietly, “Sishen, are yo
