CHAPTER 17 – PERHAPS THIS IS WHAT THEY CALL A TRUE BIG SHOT

Such a large event of merging the two continents naturally couldn’t be settled by a single letter. Su Ge’s temporary selection of the Demonic Continent had just been a suggestion, and needed close observation before implementing it. And so, after Su Ge had finished his sichen-long call via pigeon with Ye Junhou, the Shrine fixed a plan to send envoys to the Demonic Continent’s capital city, the Dark Capital.

From Ji Mo’s account, this was how the two rulers’ conversation proceeded: On a dark night of high winds and lovely weather, just as His Majesty the Demon Lord was about to carry out a deep exchange with his newly admitted concubine, a white pigeon suddenly fell from the skies into his bed with a flutter of its wings, following which the High Priest’s calm and dispassionate voice travelled from the pigeon’s mouth—

“Ye-xiaozi[1], you ought to pay reparations for destroying so many cities in the Godly Continent.”

And so the Demon Lord, now thoroughly frightened to impotence, spent an entire sichen using his unconstrained vocabulary to greet the High Priest’s eighteen generations of ancestors. The reason why he was able to stop in such a short duration, Ji Mo reckoned, was that as The Legend of Darkness had yet to conclude, its protagonist had simply run out of vocabulary.

In any case, after omitting the intimate correspondence between the Demon Lord and the High Priest’s ancestors which was not suitable for children, the contents of their respectable conversation were as follows:

Ye Junhou: Hehe, reparations? Impossible! Come to the Dark Capital to collect it if you can!

Su Ge: Okay, let’s fix a date, I’ll come.

Ye Junhou: Old Quack, are you serious? Can’t keep the pot boiling? It’s only been a couple days since Chang Hui left the Godly Continent!

Su Ge: Since you have no objections, I’ll reach the Dark Capital in seven days.

Ye Junhou: Who says I have no objections?

Su Ge: Then we’ll discuss it again, same time tomorrow.

Ye Junhou: Come, I dare you to come, I’ll be sure to chop off your head!

Then, the world fell silent once more, and the High Priest grumbled to his White Robed Priests with a frown, “That ill-bred Ye-xiaozi, he crushed my pigeon.”

Although they were on opposing sides, this did not influence Ji Mo from understanding the Demon Lord’s feelings at present. But when he recalled that this was the guy whose son had almost fed him to the snakes, he thought that perhaps he wouldn’t mind the High Priest sending a few more of his pigeons to Ye Junhou’s bed.

While the contents of their conversation were very odd, at least they had sent a warning before coming over. Without Chang Hui to restrain him, nothing could stop the High Priest from flapping his liberated wings. Ji Mo confessed he did not have Chang Hui’s level of nanny capabilities, so he did not even think about stopping him, clapping a hand on Brilliant Moon’s shoulder, “It’s up to you to oversee the Shrine’s activities while we’re at the Demonic Continent.”

“But I have absolutely no idea how to manage this place!”

Not expecting these two to brazenly run off to the Demonic Continent, dumping such a big place like the Shrine on him, Brilliant Moon’s expression was completely dumbstruck. Then, he received a friendly proposal from the Morning Star Priest, “You can teach them how to sing, dance, and let them experience the cultural influence of arts.”

Such a graceful daily life filled with an artistic atmosphere did suit an elf’s way of management, but Brilliant Moon used his remaining IQ points to voice his concerns, “What if someone tries to rebel while you’re away?”

“Use your powerful spells to blow them away.”

Brilliant Moon wasn’t exactly afraid of fighting, but he quickly came up with a new concern, “What if they don’t listen to me?”

“Use your enchanting face to blow them away.”

The method Ji Mo proposed was even simpler than his previous suggestion, that even Brilliant Moon could sense that thick, unreliable air behind his back. He asked gravely, “Can I refuse?”

Of course, the Morning Star Priest ultimately and directly aided him in solving this problem, “No, the agreement you signed is still in the High Priest’s hands.”

At the mention of the contract, Brilliant Moon instantly recalled the grudge he held against this guy, and a new wave of resentment surged within him. He fumed, “You mean, heartless thing!”

Pushing away the Elven King’s finger that was pointed at his nose, Ji Mo gave him a reserved smile, “You really ought to learn a few things on how to curse from the Demon Lord.”

After that night, both the Godly and Demonic Continents found themselves swamped with work. Those of the Shrine had been informed of the High Priest’s decision to personally head for the Demonic Continent, each one of them miserably scurrying about in search of the white pigeon the High Priest had transformed into, attempting to dissuade the High Priest from making this suicidal move.

As for the Demonic Continent, His Majesty the Demon Lord had spontaneously issued the edict that today would henceforth be the Demonic Continent’s Pigeon-Roasting Day; that all families without exception would be required to eat pigeon, and rewarded the more they ate. Within a short span of time, the prices of pigeons sold in the Dark Capital soared, so much so that the demonic beasts of the pigeon type were being sold at a thousand gold pieces – even the nobility were engaging in street fights to snatch a pigeon. Truly a moral degradation of the world, where humans did not even compare to pigeons.

Although the crowd of subordinates were thrown into general turmoil by their two rulers, Ji Mo did not have the time to be concerned of others, as he had encountered an exceedingly bothersome problem himself.

The missions issued by Ye Mingjun’s System had always been simple tasks such as strolling the streets, and he had expected it to make them hold hands at most, or give up his first kiss. At any rate, it wouldn’t count if they didn’t use their tongues. Yet it turned out that he should never underestimate a Primary School System’s level of purity, as the next mission it gave was— Please increase your capture target’s favorability meter to 100.

Ji Mo did not know how he should increase one’s favorability towards a man, but as he was at his wit’s end, he was left with no choice but to bring Ye Mingjun to the most popular dating spot in the Shrine, the Illumination Sky Lake, trying to use the atmosphere to convert his own sexuality that was as straight as an arrow.

The spring breeze made ripples on the lake as affectionate couples gathered in droves by the lakeside. Even the orioles perched on branches seemed to be affected by the breath of spring, cuddling against each other as they leisurely sang in harmony. Only the System was deadly silent, the favorability meter as still as a rock.

After making three rounds around the lake, Ji Mo did not feel the slightest hint of a romantic atmosphere. On the contrary, he had practically imprinted the geographical location in his mind, and there would be no errors if he wanted to assassinate a lover. However, he wasn’t here to participate in an FFF Inquisition activity, so he could only look expressionlessly at a certain Xianjun, “Are you really sure my current favorability is only at 50?”

“This is your third time asking me this.”

The immortal’s helpless expression said it all, but Ji Mo was still unwilling to accept this fact. He was certain of the rare trust he put in Ye Mingjun, and was sure he had never lowered his guard against any other Celestial. But even so, his favorability meter was actually a mere 50 points?

Presently, Ye Mingjun’s seal was only 4% lifted, and even if he made a conservative estimate, the favorability needed to complete Ye Mingjun’s mission was 40 times his current favorability. Just what sort of terrific, earth-shattering love did they need to complete this mission? Not to mention that he was a shut-in who was doomed to a life of solitude. There probably weren’t that many couples like that to be found in the world, was there?

So, as a romance newbie who couldn’t even comprehend a beginner’s guide, what gave Ye Mingjun the confidence to challenge a world record?

Perhaps it was because his expression was too despairing after being struck by reality, Ye Mingjun, who had been serenely admiring the view all this while finally opened his mouth to console him, “If it’s to the extent of crossing worlds, I can achieve that with half of my cultivation.”

In truth, there were a few things he did not say. While Ji Mo had tried every means to refuse him in the past, he had felt them gradually growing closer during the few times he lowered his guard. However, although they had been walking together all the while today, that feeling had vanished.

Even if there wasn’t a deal between them, he would agree to his request as long as Ji Mo asked for it. Should he tell him that? But with this little guy’s sly and timid personality, he probably wouldn’t take the initiative to approach him the moment he achieved his purpose.

“But would you be willing to return without reaching your goal?”

As if he had already guessed the immortal’s misgivings, Ji Mo’s reply was very level-headed. He was very clear of the fact that there was no such thing as reaping the benefits of something he had not sowed, nor had he been counting on the immortal to help him unconditionally.

Looking at this Morning Star Priest, Ye Mingjun came to a sudden realization. The reason why he had this feeling was that while Ji Mo had permitted him to touch him at will, his inner defenses were higher than ever, and he was constantly on his guard, not letting him take a single step closer. As he thought this, he said softly, “I remember a saying that was recorded in the humans’ ancient books and records— that love is a magical feeling that can make a person renounce their own goals for another.”

“What the humans fancy is the idea of having someone give up everything for you, not to make the sacrifice yourself. Most people are pretty stingy about their feelings like that. That’s why love stories are just stories, because the probability of it actually happening to you is too low. It will never occur to an ordinary human.”

Softly uttering the truth that could be understood by many, Ji Mo looked at the immortal, who seemed to think nothing of it. He couldn’t stop himself from sighing, “Xianjun, if you truly love a person, and the sole reason why he approaches you is for his own benefit, this isn’t something worth being happy about.”

Ji Mo only realized something off about his words after they had left his mouth. Ye Mingjun was the only hope he had of leaving this dangerous world, yet he was reminding him not to believe in his false affections, just what was he doing?

In truth, he knew that it wasn’t possible to not be hurt once he became enamored; the immortal would come into contact with the darkness of human hearts sooner or later if he continued his friendly attitude towards them. However, even so, he did not wish to be the one to harm Ye Mingjun. Perhaps he had been secretly hoping that this carefree immortal would never reveal a look of sorrow because of humans.

Ah, so that’s how it is. He had rationally reached a conclusion to assist Ye Mingjun in completing his mission, but there was something inside him that fought hard to resist it, staunchly refusing to perform to his brain’s commands. In the past, he had been too used to ignoring the presence of his emotions, and it was now that he became aware that the one suppressing the favorability meter from rising was himself.

This was exactly why emotions were truly detrimental to a person, a mere 50-point favorability was already making him wish that he could self-destruct. If this went on, he might just be driven mad.

Really, should he switch to another kind of deal?

“I know that you are very kind to me.”

Just as Ji Mo hesitated on whether to give up on this dangerous activity, Ye Mingjun’s words caused him to look up in surprise. Before he could open his mouth to ask, the immortal’s finger pressed lightly onto his chest, following which he spoke the words filled with sincerity,

“Remember the first time we met? You didn’t know who I was, and although you feared the Celestials, you still chose to pull me away from a dangerous situation. Since then, I’ve been thinking – that this person must have many emotions I don’t know hidden in his heart, and I’d like to see it.”

The immortal’s hands were slender and smooth, looking ever so beautiful; even though there was a layer of cloth between them, Ji Mo still had the impression of it pointing straight at his heart, backing a step away as if he had been given an electric shock. He warned in a severe tone, “The consequences of walking into another’s heart is much graver than you would imagine.”

Seeing him on his guard, Ye Mingjun did not continue moving closer to him, smiling lightly, “It’s fine, I’ve made the conscious decision to compensate you with myself.”

“And leave a substitute and run off once you’re done with me? I much prefer your substitute anyway.”

Ji Mo could somewhat comprehend Ye Mingjun’s line of thought; these words were just said out of sarcasm. However, he hadn’t expected the oblivious immortal to reply with an unforeseen answer,

“If I come to like you, surely I would be reluctant to make you sad. I might not leave anymore.”

“Xianjun is truly an expert at selling himself off, the words you say are even making me a little touched.”

To have such a precious treasure belong only to himself, this was a truly terrifying temptation. However, Ji Mo was not a gambler— he would only believe in a fair trade. They would exchange with each other, bit by bit, and only this would allow him a peace of mind.

Thinking of this, he gave Ye Mingjun a leisurely smile, “Though, it’ll all depend on you to be able to reach a stage where you’ll be required to take responsibility.”

Wait a minute, how did the conversation progress to this? Why did it sound like he was encouraging this guy to capture him? Neither his mind nor heart was hoping for such a development, just who was it that had caused him to get sidetracked?

Instantly realizing that there was something a little off about their conversation, before Ji Mo could contemplate any further, the voice of the System that had stayed silent all this while suddenly emerged, “Your capture target’s favorability has increased to 60.”

Using his experienced reader’s insight to survey the scene just moments ago, Ji Mo could not spot the slightest hint of a romantic atmosphere coming from it. At last, he could only remind Ye Mingjun gently, “Xianjun, it’s probably time to send your System for maintenance, the favorability would usually decrease during these kinds of moments.”

Who would have thought that Ye Mingjun would blink happily at his words, replying with a cheerful smile, “You little liar, you clearly become very happy each time you hear me say I like you.”

His words caused Ji Mo’s features to freeze. His internal voice surged in full force, why would his favorability increase all because of a childish phrase such as ‘I like you’? And he said it as if his words had been proven to be completely true! Don’t make such an unscientific conclusion, don’t you know that you have to bear the consequences for saying the wrong thing?

“Your capture target’s favorability has decreased by 5.”

Honesty was the System’s best policy, and so, a splash could be heard in the next second, and the picture scroll known as the Diorama of Civilization sank to the bottom of the lake. Yet, all a certain immortal did was spread his hands and look innocently at Ji Mo, “You’re right, it’s broken.”

“Xianjun is certainly as forthright as a child.”

Throwing this guy a side-glance, Ji Mo finally came to terms with reality— that Ye Mingjun’s mental age swung back and forth between one and five thousand years old depending on his mood, and his mischievousness came entirely from the heart!

Ye Mingjun: Let me grope his chest before he realizes.

Ji Mo: Hey, Primary School System, aren’t you going to punish him?

System: Gurgle gurgle
