 27: Global Evolution

The car was moving exceptionally slowly.

According to Luo Yong, there were three Liberation trucks carrying mutants and their relatives. The rest were all from the military. There were approximately over 40,000 citizens migrating with them, all walking behind. It was an enormous convoy.

The sluggish speed of the car made people feel drowsy. In this half-dream, half-awake state, Cong Xia immersed himself in the knowledge within the void created by the ancient jade.

Although he hadn't found an opportunity to experiment with the corpses of mutant creatures, he had basically confirmed that he could absorb the energy of deceased mutants. Regardless of the original nature of that energy, once it entered his body, it turned transparent. Cong Xia thought that this should be the so-called "attributeless energy" mentioned by ancient jade.

Even though the energy was transparent, he could still feel it. To him, it was like the air, existing within and outside his body, present between each breath and heartbeat. It seemed to be omnipresent. Cong Xia even came up with a daring idea: Could the energy fluctuations caused by earthquakes, the energy that triggered the worldwide frenzy of species mutation, be the so-called "attributeless energy"?

The more he thought about it, the more likely it seemed.

Originally, everything in the world operated according to the Five Elements. Every cell of Earth's species was composed of the Five Elements without exception. The Five Elements' energy structure governed this world.

However, now there was this mysterious and powerful ancient jade, who told him that besides the energy of the Five Elements, there was something else in the world called "attributeless energy." This energy was different from the Five Elements' energy, yet closely related. According to the ancient jade, the energy absorbed from other deceased species by Cong Xia transformed into attributeless energy once it entered his body. However, absorption was just one method of refining attributeless energy. ancient jade mentioned the first method of refining energy, which was cultivation. It was similar to what Cheng Tianbi did every day, using the freely available energy between heaven and earth, gradually filling his energy core. When the energy core was filled for the first time, it would enter the second stage of purification, the fusion core. This was the orthodox method of cultivation as mentioned by the ancient jade.

To absorb the freely available energy between heaven and earth, purify one's attributeless energy core, there was a prerequisite. That prerequisite was the existence of attributeless energy between heaven and earth.

However, attributeless energy did not exist among the Five Elements. In other words, this energy did not belong to the original world; it belonged to this post-apocalyptic era. That was why Cong Xia daringly speculated that the energy waves released during earthquakes were attributeless energy! This attributeless energy, very likely, brought about the Second Cambrian Period and was the root cause of humanity's doomsday.

In order to verify his theory, Cong Xia tirelessly read the obscure and difficult-to-understand contents in the ancient wall. Gradually, he obtained the information he desired from between the lines. Although the ancient jade did not explicitly state that attributeless energy existed throughout heaven and earth, it mentioned the awakening of something. And after this awakening, attributeless energy would follow, roaming freely between heaven and earth, allowing the ancient jade's successor to cultivate.

The ancient jade referred to this awakened thing as "knowledge".

With just one word, without detailed explanation, Cong Xia had read a lot of content before and after, and indeed, the ancient jade didn't elaborate on the reasons for the decline of "our clan," focusing instead on teaching him how to cultivate and utilize attributeless energy to revive "our clan."

Regardless, Cong Xia had basically confirmed that attributeless energy was responsible for global evolution. He couldn't help but break out in a cold sweat, realizing that he had unintentionally grasped such a huge secret. Yet, at the same time, he felt a trace of excitement.

He was a person with a strong thirst for knowledge and couldn't stop himself from exploring this world.

However, he still had a big question: Where was his energy core?

He could sense the circulation of energy within his body, but it was extremely weak, and he hadn't found a core like Cheng Tianbi did. Without a core, how could he purify it? Yet, even without a core, he could absorb energy? It was truly puzzling.

There must be something he hadn't discovered yet. As the inheritor of this ancient jade, he must have his own energy core for cultivation.

He needed to absorb as much attributeless energy as possible. The ancient jade mentioned that once the amount of attributeless energy reached a certain level, he could materialize useful things through some medium, such as metal shields or armor, even offensive weapons. Cong Xia felt an intense longing when he read those descriptions. However, his energy was still too little at the moment. He wished that one day he could stand beside Cheng Tianbi as a comrade and companion, rather than a burden in constant need of protection.

He didn't know how long he had stayed in the void when he heard Cheng Tianbi calling him.

Cong Xia opened his eyes, feeling somewhat tired, and looked at Cheng Tianbi.

Cheng Tianbi whispered, "You went into the void?"

"Yes, I made a major discovery," Cong Xia eagerly wanted to share with Cheng Tianbi.

"Let's discuss it later," Cheng Tianbi said, "For now, rest here. We'll look for something to eat nearby and give you a try."

"Okay," Cong Xia touched his hungry stomach. Since the apocalypse, he had hardly eaten enough. He hoped there would be some large prey in the wilderness. He yearned for meat.

He wasn't too afraid of ordinary evolved animals now. He had Cheng Tianbi and Liu Fengyu with him. In any case, they wouldn't starve.

Thinking about it, Cong Xia pointed at Liu Fengyu, who was still sleeping, and asked cautiously, "Should we wake him up?" He carefully observed Cheng Tianbi's expression, afraid of upsetting him.

Although Cheng Tianbi disliked Liu Fengyu, he knew that survival was the priority at this time. He wasn't entirely certain about what they might encounter in the wilderness. Clearly, filling their stomachs was the most important thing. Reluctantly, he nodded.

Cong Xia nudged Liu Fengyu, "Liu Ge, Liu Ge."

Liu Fengyu opened his eyes, "What's wrong?"

"We're going to find something to eat. Do you want to come?"

Liu Fengyu licked his lips, "Of course." Although he didn't need to eat, he still craved food.

By now, people had gradually disembarked from the vehicles and started looking for food. Although the mutants could receive rations, the portions had significantly reduced. Each person only received one portion per day. As for the ordinary civilians, they had to fend for themselves as the military was no longer able to provide for them.

Some mutants had their families with them, and a small ration was far from enough. They had to go hunting.

They walked for most of the day. Based on the cement road beneath their feet that was almost covered by wild grass, Cong Xia speculated that this place might have been a highway in the past. The sides of the highway had completely turned into a forest. Although the density wasn't high yet, there was no trace of the city left.

They saw many people entering, but they didn't know how many would come back.

Cong Xia said with some anticipation, "It would be great if we could hunt a big wild boar or something."

"It's difficult," Cheng Tianbi said. "Hunting itself is a very challenging task."

"You're right, especially the part of finding prey," Cong Xia looked towards a middle-aged man with an evolved Border Collie about 100 meters away. It wasn't just Cong Xia who was looking at him; everyone cast envious glances at the man.

At this time, having a mutated pet was almost equivalent to having billions of assets in the previous world. Those in the group who had evolved pets received the maximum amount of attention and favor. Cong Xia noticed a young and beautiful girl, young enough to be the man's daughter, following closely behind him with a hopeful expression on her face.

Cong Xia sighed softly.

Cheng Tianbi also looked at the man. "Follow him. That dog will definitely find something good."

"Many people think the same," Cong Xia said helplessly. Many people had already followed the man, hoping to pick up some scraps of information from him. But with such a large dog, even if the owner couldn't finish the food, others wouldn't get a chance.

Suddenly, the dog turned around and barked at the people behind, scaring them all away. The middle-aged man was left with only the girl.

"There's no one else now," Cheng Tianbi walked towards the man.

Liu Fengyu whistled, "Want to snatch their food? I like that."

Cong Xia felt that it wasn't appropriate, but there was no other choice. They could only follow along.
