TLN: Changing to keep the Japanese of the honorifics
A little over a week had passed since then.
Lambda-san continued to harass me in small ways but none of them were particularly unbearable for me.
I was treated worse when I was in the party.
The other guards would tell me, “You’re still here after a week? You are the top among the newcomers right now. All of them had run away with their tails between their legs after a day or three.”
He was quite surprised.
This job’s retention rate is very bad.
At this time, I was already able to handle all the tasks by myself.
As a gatekeeper, I would examine the people coming in, guard the city walls, patrol the city, and working as a night watchman. These were all unexpected byproducts of Lambda-san forcing me to do all these tasks.
“Damn. I’m amazed at how quickly you learn.”
Chief Bolton praised me.
“With you here, we might even be able to catch the thief group.”
“Thief group?”
Chief Bolton sighed and said, “Yeah. Before you came, there were a lot of robberies in the capital. Perhaps it’s because we don’t have enough manpower, they have been able to get past the guards quite easily. Now, we’re on the verge of being beaten up by the people of the city for being tax thieves.”
“But, Sieg, with you here, we might be able to catch them…… even though I look like I’m not, I’m placing my bets on you.”
I wanted to live up to his expectation, but it would be difficult if I haven’t found their traces.
And so, I continued working as a gatekeeper today.
I inspected the identities of all the visitors who came in.
As the sun was setting, a group of travelers arrived.
When I was about to go and question them, Lambda-san uncharacteristically took the lead and walked out.
“Sieg-kun. I’ll take over here.”
“I understand.”
I responded and left the questioning to Lambda-san.
Within a few minutes, the inspection of the traveling party was over.

I couldn’t help but call out to Lambda-san.
“That was pretty fast, wasn’t it?”
“Eh? Really?”
“They didn’t have permits, did they? If they don’t have permits, shouldn’t we check them against the warrants that were sent to us from other cities?”
“It’s okay. You don’t have to worry. They’ve been here a few times before, and they did not cause any problems at those times.”
“But, I think that it is better to check just to be safe.”

“Come, Sieg. Shall we work as night watchmen?”
“Are you coming today, Lambda-san?”

I thought that his manner of speaking was strange.
He spoke as if he was not always skipping.
We were assigned to patrol the streets at night.
With torches in hand, we walked around the city at night to see if there are any suspicious people. I have to be careful as there are many robberies recently.
“Sieg-kun. Let’s enter this alley next.”
Lambda-san led us into an alley.
The place was covered in the darkness where no light except for the moonlight and the torch in my hand shone. It was as quiet as the bottom of the ocean, unnoticeable by anyone.
I was about to step into the depths of the alley when it happened.
……This is….. Is there someone else here besides us?
I sensed that there was a sign of somebody around us.
In the next instant, a black figure sprang out from the shadows. He tried to stab me with the dagger he was holding.
The tip of the sword cut through the darkness, illuminated by the moonlight.
It grazed my cheek as I retreated.
“……You were able to dodge it?”
The other side’s eyes widened at my reaction speed.
When I was about to pull out the sword on my waist to intercept him, I felt a strong impact on my back.
I realized that I had been slashed from behind too late
—-Impossible. There was no sign that someone had appeared behind me. Had I been instantly teleported? Even so, it’s strange that I couldn’t react to it at all.

I wasn’t slashed by the enemy that suddenly appeared from behind me. It was the person behind me that slashed at me.
I looked behind and saw Lambda-san standing there with a smirk on his face. He was looking down at me as I fell to the ground.
“Lambda-san…… you, what are you doing?”
“Sieg-kun. You are going to die here today.”
Lambda’s mouth twisted up in a smile.
Three dark figures appeared from behind him. The moonlight revealed their faces that were familiar to me.
“They are…… from this afternoon…..”
In the afternoon, a traveling party had arrived in the city.
“There’s been a lot of robberies in this town lately, right? They are the culprits, and I was pulling the strings behind them.
Lambda-san’s tone was giddy, perhaps because of the night.
“In exchange for my cooperation, they pay me a portion of the money they steal. We’re both driven by a common interest.”
I see. No wonder it was impossible to find clues of the thieves.
With the help of Lambda-san, who is a guard, they can find the gaps in security and lead the guards to a different location.

This time, I pulled the sword out from my waist.
“I used to obey you because you were my superior, but now that I know you are a villain, things are different.”
I raised the tip of my sword to his face and said, “I am the guard that protects the city, and I’m going to take you down for joining the villains that threaten the city. I won’t show any mercy, so prepare yourself.”
