Guard

The next day.

We arrived at the penitentiary of the royal capital where the leader of the bandits was going to be executed.

The place was isolated from the mundane world. It was so dark as only the light from the torches lit up the place.

The air was also filled with dense miasma.

If an ordinary person were to step into the place, their minds would definitely be corrupted.

We followed Chief Bolton down the cobblestone passageway and arrived at the innermost cell.

The miasma was even stronger here.

In the darkness, a large man was sitting arrogantly with his legs crossed.

“Gazelle, It’s time,” said Chief Bolton.

The man looked up slowly.

The man looked at us with glazed eyes. Even in this underground prison, his eyes were not dead.

“…….Oh, it’s already that time,” the leader of the bandits, Gazelle muttered and sat up heavily.

He got out of the prison on his own feet and scratched his neck while letting out a loud yawn.

“You seemed to be quite relaxed,” I said, “You’re about to be executed, you know?”

“Did you think I’d freak out?”

Gazelle smiled.

“You think I’m going to cry and beg for my life? Do you think that I would cling to you like I don’t want to die? Well, if I was really going to die, that might have been possible.”

“……. Are you telling me that you’re not going to die?”

“I’ve got a lot of cute underlings you know. They will come to my rescue. If anything, it’s you who will die today, not me,” Gazelle said with an admonishing tone.

“I won’t say anything bad. Let me go right now and I’ll let you go. Don’t you think it’s foolish to die for a job that pays so little?”

“Sure,” I said.

“But if I let you go, innocent people will suffer, so I can’t just let you go.”

“Oh, really,” Gazelle muttered regretfully.

“If so, go ahead and die in your own sense of justice.”

I ignored his words and took him to the execution grounds.

The place of execution was on the outskirts of town.

The place was usually deserted, but today, perhaps because they announced the execution of the leader of the bandits, many of the city’s residents had gathered to watch.

The bandit group’s bad reputation had spread far and wide.

It was likely that the people who had been victims of them had rushed to witness the execution. The area was simmering with hatred.

“You evil bastard! Die and pay for your crimes!”

“Do you have any idea how many people have suffered because of you!?”

Gazelle, hearing the abuse, shouted at the people.

“Don’t give me that bullshit! You bastards can only yell from the outside! Just so you know, I don’t regret a single thing!”

He looked at them and provocatively curled his mouth.

“It’s because of people like you that we can play happily! I will continue to play with you slaves again!”

“Hahahaha,” Gazelle laughed loudly while being led to the execution platform by Chief Bolton. We were guarding the area around it.

The remnants of the bandit group were sure to make a move soon.

And that’s when it happened. As Gazelle stepped onto the stairs leading to the execution platform, they shouted, “Now! Save the leader!”

Shadows jumped out from among the spectators.

At first glance, they seemed to be mere residents of the city, but their movements were agile and refined.

The sunlight illuminated the daggers in their hands.

—– So you all came!

The residents of the city panicked at the sudden attack and fled like spiderlings.

Among them, the ones coming towards us were all remnants of the bandit group…

“You see? I told you so. I told you that my cute underlings would come to my aid,” Gazelle laughed.

“You guys are done for!”

The bandits tried to head straight for Gazelle, but I stood in front of him.

“I’ll kill anyone who gets in my way!”

A knife was thrust at me without hesitation, but I parried it.

“Uooo……!?”

I sliced through the body of the bandit, who had lost his center of gravity.

“Ahhhhh!”

Even if I took out one of them, there were still quite a few more.

There were probably about ten of them.

Just by their appearance, you could tell that everyone had a certain amount of skill.

But it was no big deal for us.

A bandit snapped his neck and said provocatively, “…… don’t get carried away after defeating one of us. We’ll show you what happens when you mess with the Gazelle bandits.”

“I see, thanks for telling me,” I said.

“……. Now, all of you bandits are here. So, if we finish you off, the Gazelle bandits will be destroyed.”

“Screw you!”

A bandit with blood on his head attacked me.

But before he could slash at me, he was hit in the head by a hammer from the side and was flung across the cobblestone floor like a bullet.

“Hahaha! Nice shot!” Spinoza chuckled as she carried the hammer on her shoulder.

“Don’t forget about us either…… So? Who’s going to get their brains smashed by my hammer next?”

“Don’t fuck with me! I’m going to make you lose that cocky mouth of yours.”

In the next moment, a gust of wind cut through the bandits, and they fell on the ground like dominoes.

The one who was wielding the sword – Seira.

“I can’t keep up with you guys!”

“Damn it! You little slut! Come on everyone! I’m going to cut her up first!”

The bandits were about to attack Seria.

Fwoosh! Fwoosh!

One after another, arrows penetrated their foreheads.

“……Ufufuf. There are so many gaps.”

From the roof of a distant house, Fam peeked out. Her arrows precisely stopped the bandits dead in their tracks.

It was not a battle anymore. This was simply trampling.

In the blink of an eye, the bandits were annihilated.

The only people who remained standing on the execution site were us the guards. Gazelle on the execution platform looked down at the scene with a pale face.

I climbed the stairs leading to the execution platform and stood in front of Gazelle.

“I’m sure those cute underlings you are so proud of are gone now.”

“Ah……aaaaa……”

He collapsed on his knees and clutched my legs, “Wait, wait. Please don’t kill me!!”

I guess he was now feeling the closeness of death.

Gazelle desperately begged for his life.

“Did you ever listen to the begging of the people you’ve killed? Did you ever offer a helping hand to those who were sold into slavery?”

Of course, that was impossible.

“You never listened to the pleas of others, but you want to be saved?” I asked.

“Today, you will die, not us.”

“Ahhhh! Aaaaaaaaa!?”

When Gazelle’s head was pinned on the execution table, he flailed about in an attempt to escape. The way his limbs were able to move around violently was nothing short of ridiculous.

“Stop it! Stop it! I don’t want to die! I don’t want to die! Please don’t kill me! Stop! Uwaaaaaaaaa!?”

“You look unseemly. This is what happens when you kill without being prepared to die!”

I looked down at Gazelle and spat out words coldly.

“Crying out for your life, clinging to it, begging for it, and then dying. Is there a better end for a villain other than that?”

The bandit leader was executed and all his men were put to the noose.

On this day, a bandit group was destroyed.

The people of the capital can now live in peace.
