On our patrol route, we came upon a square.

It was located right after passing through the main gate.

There was a fountain at the center of the square paved with cobblestones all around.

It was a place for the residents of the city to relax. Housewives were chatting with each other and children were running around and playing.

It was a peaceful scene.

As we stopped to catch a break, we saw two familiar faces walking towards us from across the street.

“What a surprise,” I said.

“It’s not a big city. When on patrol, we’re bound to run into each other. I’ve met some of the other guards as well.”

Spinoza replied with arms folded.

Fam was standing beside her.

“No, it’s not that. I’m surprised at the fact that Spinoza is doing her rounds in earnest. I thought you would be at a tavern at this time.”

“Don’t be silly. Aren’t I at work? I won’t do something like that.”

“You used to do that.”

You even drank to the point of being intoxicated.

“You’re right. She was planning to go to the bar today, but she got banned for not paying her bills.”

“Ah! Fam! You tipped him off, didn’t you!?”

“I was just reporting to Sieg as his subordinate,” said Fam.

“By the way, she was trying to skip patrol too. I even tried to stop her as she entered the casino, but she was broke.”

“Don’t tell me you know everything!” Spinoza tried to grab Fam.

But Fam quickly twisted her body and hid behind my back. She peeked out from behind me and looked at Spinoza.

“Ufufu. Your attacks won’t hit me.”

“This is why I hate gloomy people. They sneak around too much. You should just come at me head-on.” Spinoza said and looked at me.

“……Sieg. Hand her over. I won’t stand it this time. I’ve got to teach her a lesson.”

“Teach her what?”

""

“About who’s better.”

“I have no intention of going head-to-head with someone as violent as you. You know what conflicts only happen between people of your level.”

“Y-you…!”

“Hey, why don’t we stop fighting amongst ourselves?”

I hurriedly intervened between the two.

It looks like a battle was about to break out. What are the guards who were supposed to protect the city going to do if they were the ones to cause a disturbance in the city?

“The two of them don’t seem to get along well,” Seira said.

“Apparently so.”

Spinoza was bright and dynamic, and Fam was dark and sensitive.

Two opposites might attract in the law of magnetism, but in human relations, it’s more of repelling each other more often than not.

They were like oil and water.

“We’re in the same squad, so I want us to get along……” Siera said.

I agree completely.

But, there was nothing I could do about it.

That’s when it happened.

“The knights are back!” I heard the city’s resident shouting.

““……!””

The eyes of the people moved towards the gate.

A group of people dressed in silver and white armor walked in from the gate. They were accompanying a carriage as they entered. The residents of the city lined up on two sides of the route they were taking.

Then, they kneeled in place.

The knights had gone on an expedition to defeat the demons. When they returned, the residents of the city were supposed to greet them like this.

We had to move aside so as not to interfere with the knights’ route.

The knights strut down the cobblestone street, looking like they owned the place. They seemed to be dressed in confidence as all of them had their chins up.

“They’re acting all high and mighty. I don’t like it.” Spinoza spat out quietly.

“I agree with you at this point. There’s nothing uglier than men who wear their powers on their sleeves. Even from far away, I’m feeling choked up.” Fam’s voice was tinged with disgust.

“Aa…”

Children were playing ball in an alley.

One of them threw the ball, and the other failed to catch it. The ball rolled past the crowd and into the middle of the knights’ path.

“I-I’m sorry.” a boy walked into the street to pick up the ball.

Then, one of the knights flashed with aggression.

In the next moment, the knight’s right foot kicked the boy’s solar plexus.

“Aaaah!?”

A loud thud echoed.

The boy groaned and crouched on the spot.

“!?”

I could feel Seira next to me gasp.

The residents of the city did the same thing.

The air in the place froze in an instant.

“You brat, how dare you interfere with our march! I’m going to give you a good beating in place of your parents!”

The knight said, and once again kicked the crouching boy in the leg.

The other knights around him just grinned and didn’t stop him. The boy held his head and tears streamed down his face. He could only keep repeating the words, “I’m sorry.”

“How cruel……!” Seira said with a stunned look on her face.

Before she could more…… I was already moving.

The knight was about to kick the boy further when the axle of his foot was swept away.

“Uooo!?”

The knight lost his balance and fell on his butt. He then glared at me.

“What? Who are you?”

“That’s what I should be asking you. Can’t you see the kid apologizing?”

""

I glared at him and he shouted at me.

“You…… are a guard, right? Do you know what you’re doing?”

“Yes. I am a guard. It’s my job to protect the city. We can’t afford to overlook people like you who threaten the city’s inhabitants.”

I said, and the knight’s expression turned sinister.

“It looks like we’ve got some pretty dashing guards.”

He put his hand on the hilt of his sword.

“It’s outrageous that a guard like you would defy a knight. I’m going to make you understand your place in the world, you fool!”

“If you’re going to draw your sword, you’d better be prepared.”

“I will cut you down!”

When the knight swung his sword upwards…

… too slow.

I grabbed the knight’s face, put my weight on it, and slammed it as hard as I could on the cobblestones.

“Gaaaa…!?”

After kissing the cobblestone with vigor, the knight’s eyes went white and his teeth shattered. He fell to his knees and did not move a muscle.

I spat on the knight and said, “You’ve been neglecting training, haven’t you? There are so many gaps in your defense…. Well, you probably can’t hear me anymore.”
