Lambda and I stood on each side of the gate, acting as gatekeepers.

This will be the memory of my first duty.

I can’t let anyone suspicious enter the city.

So, I placed all my spirit in guarding……

“People don’t come as often as I thought……”

About two hours have passed since I started standing in front of the gate.

Despite this, no one had tried to enter the city. For now, I just kept standing in front of the gate.

“This city is one of the most dangerous areas in the world. Merchants don’t come often because the money to hire escorts to this city is too expensive. Regular visitors wouldn’t even come due to the expense. Adventurers who have a business in this city may come, though.”

“Is that so……”

“Didn’t Sieg also have a hard time coming here? Weren’t you attacked by a flock of monsters?”

“Yeah. I’ve been attacked many times on the way, but…… I didn’t have a hard time fighting them.”

On the way here, I was attacked by an abnormal amount of monsters.

Fortunately, their strength wasn’t a big deal, so it was all good, but they were quite troublesome to deal with.

Mainly because I was stopped every time along the way.

That said, I thought about coming to the Royal Capital Astaroth from Estor by carriage, but every coachman rejected my request.

There is a great deal of danger in coming to the Royal Capital Astaroth. They wanted me to pay more money and an extra amount to hire an escort if I really wanted to come here.

The amount asked from me was so high that it seemed like a rip-off. Moreover, I couldn’t afford it after being kicked out of the party.

That’s why I came all the way on foot.

“You didn’t have a hard time…… I think the monsters around here are pretty strong. As expected of a former B-rank adventurer, truly different.”

Lambda said so with a bitter smile.

“Jeez.Makes me wonder why someone like you chose to become a guard. Maybe something happened?”

He was using a probing tone as if he was trying to look into the wound of the other party.

However, I don’t think of it as a wound.

It had already turned into a scab and healed after I told Chief Bolton my story. So I decided to confide without hiding anything.

“I was expelled from the party I belonged to. The party was pretty famous, so there wouldn’t be any other party who would take me in after being abandoned. When I was in trouble, a person from the Adventurer’s Guild introduced me to work as a guard for this city.”

“Oh my, so you got expelled.”

The color of joy floated in Lambda’s eyes.

“Even though you became a B-rank adventurer, you fell down didn’t you. It’s just impossible to know what’s going to happen in life, don’t you think?”

Lambda seemed to be grinning.

“……Oops. Looks like someone has come.”

When I raised my face to Lambda’s murmur, a carriage was approaching from the front.

One person is pulling the reins of the horse on the coachman’s seat. Three people were surrounding the carriage, acting as escorts. A total of four people had arrived at the front gate.

“What business do you have today?”

“I came to deliver supplies.”

“Can you show me your permit?” asked Lambda.

“Yes.”

The man sitting on the coachman’s seat took off his robe and took out the permit from his pocket. Then he handed it over to Lambda.

Lambda looked at the permit and nodded.

“Well then, let me inspect your goods.”

“I understand.”

Lambda moved towards the back of the carriage and opened the hood.

I also took a look from behind.

The supplies were piled up at the back. It contained water, food, and daily necessities.

“It seems that there is nothing suspicious,” Lambda convincingly said.

“Ok. It’s fine to enter the city.”

“……ok.”

The coachman nodded and put on the hood again.

He pulled the reins of the horse and tried to advance.

“Please wait a minute.”

His hands stopped at my words.

“…… What is it?”

“I’m sorry, but I can’t let you enter the city.

“……but this man has allowed us to pass?”

“Hey hey, what is it so suddenly?”

Lambda ran to me in a hurry.

“Sieg, this person is a merchant. I have also received news of his visit in advance. His permit is also real, isn’t it?”

“Yeah. The permit is real. There is also news that a merchant is coming. However, he is not necessarily that merchant.”

“…… What do you mean?”

“I’m afraid that they have replaced the real merchant on the way here. They are not people who come here by nature.”

“The merchant has been replaced you say?” Lambda said. “Eh? Then where did the real merchant go?”

“Th merchant and his escorts must have been killed to seal their mouths.”

When I said that Lambda opened his eyes wide.

“That’s stupid.”

“I’m not saying this without reason. I smell a faint scent of blood from them. The inside of the carriage is also the same. It was carefully wiped off, but there were a lot of bloodstains. The amount of blood lost is clearly lethal.

I looked at the coachman and his men.

“They ambushed the merchant that was on his way here and replaced their group. If they have the merchant’s clothes and permit, then they can enter the city…… Secure their identities by asking for their name and inquiring if they are part of the chamber.”

“……Tch. I thought it was going to work.”

The man clicked his tongue.

I put my hand on the handle of the sword on my waist.

The men dressed as escorts around the carriage also pulled out their swords.

“You’re right. We are not merchants. We killed and replaced them. I should have carefully erased the smell of blood…… Well, it can’t be helped if we were found out, but even if you try to kill us, we will still try to go inside.”
