Chapter 10: Whole Wheat Bread (3)

***

“This is it?”

Pote nodded vigorously.

[Thank goodness. The wheelbarrow is still here.]

He had apologized, saying that he couldn’t make it with his current abilities. That’s why Hae-jun had half given up. He figured that even if he couldn’t consume all the crops harvested here, at least he wouldn’t have to worry about feeding himself.

“So, you can move the harvested crops to reality?”

[Yes! As much as you want.]

Eggs, cabbages, cucumbers, wheat, potatoes. He wouldn’t have to worry about food for the time being, as long as he had these. No, at the rate of production here, he could even open a vegetable store by taking them to reality.

It was a windfall when his bank account was almost empty.

Somehow, things were going smoothly.

“I’ll be back in a jiffy.”

Hae-jun, who had put some of the harvested crops in the wheelbarrow, said to Pote.

He wanted to check for himself if he could move them to reality by crossing dimensions.

Just like last time, there was no message, and he passed through the dimensional passage safely.

“It works. It works!”

Hae-jun hummed to himself as he moved the crops he had brought from the farm to the storage.

When he returned to the farm, his stamina had been reduced by 1. Since stamina was also consumed during transportation, he decided to plan the amount and number of times he would move things systematically.

Having made up his mind, Hae-jun began the bakery renovation work.

‘There was space hidden in a place like this?’

There was a small room next to the workspace where the oven was installed.

It was messy, but there was nothing to repair, so he passed. He carefully filled the holes in the wall with wood.

Three-hour-long renovation work was finally over. It was rough, but it was usable.

In the meantime, the hens had laid more eggs, and he had harvested more cucumbers, cabbages, and potatoes. He filled the warehouse with crops harvested from the farm. Hae-jun smiled with satisfaction as he looked at the food piled up like a mountain.

He felt like a rich man.

Next, it was time to challenge himself to make bread.

He picked up a bundle of harvested wheat and headed to the thresher next to the bakery.

Creak- Rumble-

“Oh!? It works. It works!”

Fortunately, the thresher, which he had been skeptical about, did its job and he was able to get wheat grains.

He spread some of the remaining chaff in the chicken coop and made compost with the rest.

In front of the kitchen counter, Hae-jun checked his father’s notebook again.

“Let’s see, the necessary ingredients are… flour, yeast, salt, milk… Hmm, there’s not enough.”

He could substitute sunflower seed oil for cooking oil, but there was no yeast, salt, milk, or maple syrup. He knew this from the beginning, so it wasn’t a big deal.

‘Let’s just use what we have and leave out what we don’t. Let’s skip the process too.’

Determined, Hae-jun found a wooden bowl on the shelf, added flour, sunflower seed milk, and water, and began to knead the dough. He occasionally looked at the pictures in the notebook.

After kneading, it took an hour for the first fermentation. In the meantime, Hae-jun looked around the farm and the chicken coop, and brought firewood to light the fire in the oven.

“Hmm…”

The condition of the dough after an hour was similar to before.

Hae-jun tilted his head and moved on to the next step, thinking that it would somehow work out.

He punched down the dough, shaped it into a circle, let it go through the second fermentation, put it in a mold, and baked it in the oven for 35 minutes.

Now, all that was left was to open the oven and check the result.

[Oh~ I’m curious. Bread made by Hae-jun.]

“Did it turn out well?”

Hae-jun swallowed hard as he gulped nervously.

He opened the oven with trembling hands to check the result.

“Oh my…”

It wasn’t the usual plump and round loaf of bread.

Somehow, it didn’t rise as much as one would call it bread, and it was flat and hard.

“It didn’t turn out as bread, but as a cookie.”

Hae-jun had no way of knowing that the bread didn’t rise properly because there was no yeast.

Yeast, which causes fermentation, is an essential ingredient in making bread. It is essential for producing carbon dioxide to expand the dough and for giving it its characteristic aroma.

[How is it? Did you succeed? Charles’s son, so your skills are somewhere…]

Pote, who couldn’t contain his curiosity and flew in front of the oven, shut his mouth tightly.

[Haha. Wow, you finished it.]

“It must have failed, right?”

[Umm… Well.]

He couldn’t be picky.

The important thing was that he had made edible food using flour.

Hae-jun took a bite of the freshly baked, hot bread and mumbled.

“It’s surprisingly edible?”

It wasn’t the soft texture of ordinary bread, and it didn’t taste salty at all because there was no salt, but it was still edible. At least, to Hae-jun’s taste…

“Do you want to try it?”

[Haha… No, I’m fine.]

Pote smiled awkwardly, sweating profusely.

He had been looking forward to it, but he seemed very disappointed when he made bread that was below his expectations.

He couldn’t help it, even if he was sorry. Hae-jun’s cooking skills were poor, and he also lacked ingredients.

“Tsk, if you don’t want it, then don’t.”

***

He filled a water jug found in the corner of the warehouse and packed some bread.

It was good food that could fill his stomach, even if it was tasteless.

This was because the experience gained from baking several times in the bakery had leveled him up, and thanks to that, a new land had appeared.

The new area was a low mountain with no ruined buildings or structures, like last time.

Hae-jun and Pote headed towards the forest covered with trees.

[Hae-jun, over there!]

At the end of Pote’s stem, there was a chicken with a pointed crown like a king and a long tail.

[It’s a chicken, a chicken!]

“Is that a rooster?”

[Judging from its size, feathers, and the shape of its crown, it definitely is.]

“Let’s catch it.”

[With that method from before?]

“Of course.”

Just in case, Hae-jun had brought the wheat, basket, and rope, the so-called chicken catching kit.

He carefully set up the trap, stepped back, and watched the rooster in silence. The rooster, unaware of anything, approached him, picking up the bait. It was easily caught by Hae-jun.

Cluck- Cluck!

It flapped its wings trying to escape, but it was no use.

[Haha. Now, a chicken is nothing.]

“Right.”

[Are you going back to the farm?]

“No, let’s go a little further. I think I might get something great other than a chicken.”

Somehow, he had such an expectation, and it soon came true.

“Is it a lime?”

Among the trees with lush leaves, he found a tree with round, green fruits the size of a child’s fist.

In times like this, it was a good idea to check his father’s notebook.

There was a lot of information in there.

[Lime: A citrus fruit. It looks similar to a lemon, but it is smaller and rounder. It is good to use in drinks like mojitos. *Note - Lemons are larger and longer than limes. They look similar when they are not ripe, so don’t get them confused.]

Hae-jun, who had read the note, brought his face close to the green fruit.

After carefully observing it, referring to the picture and description,

“That’s right! It wasn’t a lime, but a lemon.”

He thought it was a lime because it was green, but it was a lemon that hadn’t ripened yet and turned yellow.

He thought it was a lime, but referring to his father’s notebook, it seemed to be lemon.

Hae-jun carefully dug up the lemon tree and returned to the farm. He put the rooster in the chicken coop and planted the lemon tree in a spot near the fence.

“Wow, crazy!”

As soon as he transplanted the tree and watered it, the green fruits began to turn bright yellow. They weren’t big enough to harvest, but they were quickly absorbing nutrients and ripening. He was amazed every time he saw it. This must also be due to the vitality of the farm.

Wheat, cabbage, cucumbers, potatoes, and even a lemon tree. The farm had become abundant in the past few days.

Hae-jun, who was somehow excited, went back into the forest.

This couldn’t be the end.

.

.

.

-Ugh

.

“Huh? What’s that sound?”

As he was making his way through the woods that blocked his view, he heard a woman’s moan from somewhere.

“Pote. Where did you hear that sound?”

[That way!]

He turned his head in the direction Pote’s stem was pointing, and he saw a person lying down.

He rushed over to see a blonde-haired Caucasian girl. She seemed to be breathing, so she wasn’t dead, but her face was very pale.

“Hey, wake up.”

He patted her cheek and the girl moaned softly.

She soon opened her mouth.

“Ugh… H…”

“Yes? What is it?”

“H… Hungry…”

“Are you hungry?”

“…Starving…”

The girl squeezed out her last bit of strength to convey the message that she was hungry and collapsed.

Hae-jun, who was getting anxious, opened the water jug and poured water on the girl’s dry, white lips. As life returned to her dry lips, the girl slowly opened her eyes. Fortunately, she wasn’t dead.

Hae-jun broke off a piece of the hard bread and put it in the girl’s mouth.

Munch, munch-

The girl who was chewing the bread frowned slightly.

Was she tasting it even at this moment? Hae-jun, who felt a little sorry, poured some more water.

“It’s hard, so chew and swallow it with water. It doesn’t taste good, but it will help you regain your strength.”

Even Hae-jun, who had a terrible palate, knew that the first bread he made tasted like hardtack eaten during a march without any candy.

Anyway, after feeding her water and bread little by little, the girl regained her energy after a few minutes.

“Thank you. I’m alive thanks to you.”

The girl said, getting up from the dirt floor.

The girl’s body was scratched, bruised, and haggard, but upon closer inspection, she was quite a beauty. If she had been in South Korea, she would have received a business card from a casting director just by walking down the street.

Suddenly, the girl’s eyes widened.

It was because she saw Pote floating around Hae-jun.

“A spirit?!… Are you a spirit master?”

The girl asked, looking back and forth between Pote and Hae-jun.

‘Are spirits rare in this dimension as well?’

“No.”

“But how did you get a spirit?…”

“It just happened.”

“You are a noble being blessed by the priest.”

The girl said politely, even though she was uncomfortable.

Hae-jun was rather uncomfortable with such a reaction.

“No, I’m not. I’m nothing like that. So, please be comfortable.”

“I understand.”

“But how did you end up lying down here?”

“Well, I… Ugh.”

The girl who was trying to recall her memory groaned in pain.

“Are you okay?”

“Yes… But I don’t know. I don’t remember why I’m here at all.”

“You don’t remember anything?”

The girl nodded slightly to Hae-jun’s question.

The girl couldn’t remember anything except her name, Chloe. How she came here and why she was lying down here.

“Thank you for saving me. I will definitely repay this favor. Well then.”

Chloe, who greeted him politely, turned around and disappeared into the forest.

And a moment later, the girl came back the way she had gone.

“I knew you’d come back.”

“What happened? You can’t get past the fog?”

“I can’t go outside the fog. I was about to tell you that, but you left too quickly.”

“Oh, is there a magic barrier?”

“Umm… For now, yes.”

He had a hard time explaining everything that had happened on the farm so far, so he glossed over it.

‘By the way, I knew someone would show up from where the fog cleared. I’m not the only one in this world. Thank goodness.’

Perhaps the girl was someone who had been living somewhere in this dimension. Then, for some reason, she got caught in the fog and collapsed and was fortunately found by Hae-jun.

‘Does that mean that if the fog clears, I might be able to find a path leading somewhere outside?’

If there was a way in, there must be a way out.

Hae-jun felt that he should work harder on the farm. He had to gain experience and level up in order to clear the fog and open up a passage to the outside.

“Let’s stay together for now. You can’t go outside the fog anyway.”

“Is that okay?”

“Of course. I was lonely being by myself.”

Chloe and Hae-jun, who had decided to stay together for the time being, formally exchanged names and greeted each other. They found out that they were the same age, so they decided to speak comfortably.

Just as they were about to come down from the forest and go to the farm.

“Huh? What’s that?”

He found something grazing leisurely in the meadow outside the fence.

He had found a rooster, a lemon tree, and a girl who had lost her memory, and now another animal had appeared.

‘Is today the day I find anything?’

Hae-jun smiled faintly.
