Chapter - 40

By Tea Time Translations

Li Yuangui walked to the palace gate and saw an elderly woman dressed in the attire of a high-ranking widow standing outside the gate. Her presence was illuminated by the palace lanterns, creating a calm and dignified silhouette. He walked up to her and bowed, saying, "I apologize for making you wait, Madam. It's my fault! Please enter, Madam."

As he spoke, two young eunuchs had already carried a sedan chair and quickly followed behind. They lowered it gently.

"Madam, the Emperor has been residing in the Western Garden these days, and it's quite a distance to reach. Please, allow us to carry you there," Li Yuan Gui said.

Madam Pei nodded in acknowledgment and said, "Thank you for your thoughtfulness. However, I am still capable of walking, and I wouldn't dare overstep any boundaries within the palace. Please guide the way, and I will walk there on my own."

Li Yuan Gui tried to persuade her a couple more times, but when he saw that she was adamant about not using the sedan chair, he had the young eunuchs carry it while she walked beside it. Li Yuan Gui personally held a lantern and led the way, guiding Madam Pei through the palace gates, across the Banana Grove, and finally to the Chengguang Hall.

Emperor Xiao Lie had been waiting in the outer hall and when he heard the commotion outside, he turned to greet Madam Pei. He saw her, a gray-haired elderly woman, leaning on a cane with Li Yuan Gui assisting her as she walked toward him. Though many years had passed since he last saw her, she appeared older than his memories of her. Nevertheless, he recognized her instantly. She was Madam Pei. He walked over to her, and as soon as she stepped off the steps, he held out his hand to support her. Emperor Xiao Lie was a few steps down from the platform, and he turned to Li Yuan Gui and said:

"Didn't I instruct you to have Madam Pei enter in the sedan chair?" His voice carrying an air of disapproval.

Before Li Yuan Gui could respond, Madam Pei said, "Thank you for your consideration, Your Majesty. Please don't blame Eunuch Li. It was my own lapse of manners."

Without waiting for Li Yuan Gui's reply, Madam Pei approached Emperor Xiao Lie and knelt to show her respect. He quickly stepped forward to support her, uttered a "rise," and personally helped her up the steps into the inner hall.

Without waiting for any orders, Li Yuan Gui had already brought a decorated chair, but Madam Pei politely declined. Emperor Xiao Lie expressed his sincere sentiments, saying, "I still remember my early years. My birth mother passed away, and you treated me as your own. Now, decades have passed, and circumstances have changed. I've had the fortune to return to the capital, and I intended to visit you earlier, but various affairs have kept me occupied. I planned to wait for You'an to return before making the visit. Unexpectedly, you came to see me first. If you insist on not sitting, I will stand with you." He then instructed Li Yuan Gui to remove his own chair.

Madam Pei then took her seat.

Emperor Xiao Lie inquired about her health and the situation at her home. Madam Pei replied, "Thanks to Your Majesty's concern, my health is still good. As for my children and grandchildren, they acted without discerning right from wrong and followed others, which caused trouble for Your Majesty. You are merciful and have chosen not to hold their past actions against them. I'm profoundly grateful for that."

When Emperor Xiao Lie entered the capital, he adopted a lenient approach. The officials of the former dynasty, except for those closely associated with King Shun'an, were all granted amnesty, regardless of their previous offenses. If they presented congratulatory petitions acknowledging his ascension, they would be pardoned for their past deeds. Individuals like Zhou Xing and Pei Quan, who once distanced themselves from Xiao Lie and criticized him as a traitor during the rebellion, quickly submitted petitions that shifted the blame to threats and coercion. They claimed that their previous words had been insincere.

Pei Xiu-Zhi, in particular, followed the same course. During the initial stages of the rebellion, he had led troops to confront the forces of Wuding. He committed all his efforts to earn achievements for himself. When they faced the last siege and eventually abandoned the city, he was captured by Xiao Yintang. Upon Xiao Lie's accession to the throne, Xiao Yintang presented a written confession by Pei Xiu-Zhi, in which he expressed profound regret and a desire to pledge loyalty to the new Emperor, asking for leniency in his sentence.

In fact, without Xiao Yintang's intercession, Xiao Lie had no intention of making life difficult for the Pei family's descendants. He quickly granted them amnesty and allowed Pei Xiu-Zhi to return home. He only stripped him of his recently acquired title of Duke of a State as a warning to others.

As Madam Pei spoke, she rose once again to express gratitude to Xiao Lie. Xiao Lie assisted her back to her seat and sighed, "Madam, there's no need for such concerns. I am not unreasonable. Given the circumstances at that time, who wasn't under duress? But I do feel a bit guilty towards you. Shortly after entering the capital, I bestowed a title upon your second son. It was a difficult decision, as your second son had harmed my subordinates. Without such actions, it would have been challenging to win their trust. However, rest assured, the Pei family has earned great merit for Wei, and the title of Duke will remain intact."

Madam Pei hurriedly replied, "Your Majesty's words are too heavy! He is currently at home, reflecting on his actions. Committing such a colossal error, and yet, Your Majesty has spared his life, which is a tremendous act of grace. I am deeply grateful, and I bear no grudges."

"Madam has always been reasonable. Don't blame me. I can rest assured. Have him settle down and prepare for future opportunities to serve the court."

Madam Pei expressed her gratitude, and Xiao Lie said a few more words, carefully observing her expression. He then inquired, "Madam, is there something you need? If so, please don't hesitate to tell me. I will do my best to assist with any matter I can."

Madam Pei smiled and said, "Since Your Majesty has noticed, I will speak the truth. I came here for the marriage of my grandson, You'an."

Xiao Lie was momentarily surprised but then delighted. "What wonderful news! You'an should be returning soon from his mission in Wusizang. I don't know which family's daughter Madam has in mind for him. Please, tell me quickly, and I am willing to take charge of the arrangements!"

Madam Pei replied, "Thank you for Your Majesty's kind intentions. I will be straightforward. I came for the marriage of You'an with the daughter of the Zhen family from Quanzhou. Her name is Jiafu. She is not a stranger but is actually the niece of my eldest daughter-in-law, making her Youan's cousin."

Xiao Lie hesitated for a moment and then asked, "Is this the same Zhen family who recently entered the capital with Fujian's provincial governor, Gao Huaiyuan?"

Madam Pei smiled and confirmed, "Exactly."

Madam Pei remained composed as she continued, "Your Majesty might not be aware, but the Zhen family's daughter used to visit me often since her childhood. You'an has known her since he was young. However, I was unaware of Youan's feelings for her until last year, when you were forced into the rebellion, and I received a handwritten letter from him. That was when I learned that he had fallen in love with the Zhen family's daughter. But at that time, everything was chaotic, and I was following you closely, preoccupied with your safety. He implored me repeatedly, asking me to take it to heart for him. He wanted me to propose to the Zhen family on his behalf when the right time came. Now that the major events have finally concluded, I heard that the Zhen family has entered the capital with Fujian's provincial governor. I suspect the Zhen family's daughter might be related to Your Majesty's plans. I was thinking about going to inquire about it, but I was concerned about potentially inconveniencing the Zhen family. Your Majesty knows that Right Peace has always been self-reliant and never asked me to do anything for him all these years, except for this one thing. So I kept his request in mind. With a little pride I have left from my previous service by Your side, I ventured into the palace for an audience."

"I am unaware of why Your Majesty has summoned the Zhen family's daughter to the capital. If it doesn't conflict with Youan's marriage plans, I will be relieved and can then go to propose the marriage to the Zhen family as soon as possible. After all, You'an is not getting any younger, and I eagerly hope he can establish his own family and settle down."

Madam Pei finished speaking and smiled at Xiao Lie.

Xiao Lie pondered for a moment, then stood up as if he had just woken from a dream. "I was completely unaware of the connection between You'an and the Zhen family's daughter! Rest assured, Madam. There is nothing else behind my summoning of the Zhen family's members to the capital. It's merely to reward the Zhen family for their previous favor to Yin Tang. There is no issue with Youan's marriage."

Madam Pei expressed her gratitude, and Xiao Lie hesitated for a moment, gazing at her intently before saying, "I won't keep it from you, Madam. Even back when we were in Wuding, I inquired several times about Youan's marriage, hoping he could marry soon. He, however, repeatedly declined, leaving me helpless. You'an has served by my side for many years and made significant contributions. Now that he's having a grand wedding, I must reward him. I intend not only to arrange the marriage for him but to celebrate it with great pomp. What do you think, Madam?"

As he spoke, he locked his eyes on the elderly woman sitting opposite.

Madam Pei and he gazed at each other for a moment before nodding and saying, "I agree to everything that Your Majesty decides."

Xiao Lie appeared relieved and said, "I will make the necessary arrangements. Rest assured, Madam."

Madam Pei smiled faintly and did not say anything more. She only took her leave and Xiao Lie personally escorted her out of the Western Park. Upon his return, he sat behind the desk again but gradually lost his focus. Afterward, he called in Li Yuangui to ask about the Zhen family's daughter.

Li Yuangui responded, "That young lady is well-mannered and speaks intelligently. I have already presented her to Your Majesty, and it's up to Your Majesty to decide. If you still have doubts, I can summon her to the palace, and Your Majesty can meet her."

Xiao Lie initially nodded in agreement but then shook his head. "Since You'an is deeply in love with her, there's no need to summon her back and forth. I'm afraid of scaring her off. Forget it."

Li Yuangui said with a serious tone, "Rest assured, Your Majesty. If I've said anything untruthful, Your Majesty can cut off my head when the time comes."

Xiao Lie burst into hearty laughter. For the first time in a long while, he felt content. He had set aside a burden, but at the same time, he felt a faint sense of regret.

At Pei You'an's age, for most men, they would have already settled down. However, he remained a bachelor and didn't even have a woman to look after his daily needs. Now that he had finally found a solution, how could Xiao Lie not be delighted? Yet, amidst his joy, he thought about how his son had never mentioned this matter to him and had only learned of it today through Madam Pei. If it weren't for the Zhen family's daughter's initial refusal to marry, he could have made a serious mistake. It left him feeling somewhat regretful.

After his laughter, Xiao Lie gradually became pensive again and suddenly said, "Go and summon the Crown Prince."

Li Yuangui went out, and within the time it took for a cup of tea, the sound of footsteps could be heard from outside the hall. Crown Prince Yin Tang entered and knelt before Xiao Lie, addressing him as "Father Emperor."

Xiao Lie ordered him to rise. Yin Tang said, "Father Emperor, your son was just thinking of coming to see you. These days, I've been busy with the reorganization of the Five Armies. Today, I've made some progress, and I've completed the statistics for the total number of troops and personnel for the different military bureaus and guards under the Five Prefectures. The final count is 3,256,373 individuals on the roster, but in reality, it's only half that number. The specific reasons will be written up in detail and submitted to Father Emperor for review as soon as possible."

Xiao Lie nodded and said, "This shows that there were many problems in the previous dynasty, and there's still much work ahead of us. You have worked hard."

Yin Tang replied, "It is your son's duty to share your burdens, Father Emperor. Besides, I haven't done much. Where's the hardship? More importantly, Father Emperor, the enthronement ceremony is tomorrow, and you've been handling countless affairs these days. Tonight, you should rest early and regain your strength."

Xiao Lie smiled and said, "I know. Yin Tang, I called you here because there's something related to you that I want to discuss with you. A while ago, Feng Tong came to see me and mentioned that you received help from the Zhen family of Quanzhou in the past. She wanted to appoint the Zhen family's daughter as your concubine to show gratitude. I didn't know the full details at the time, so I agreed, thinking it was a good idea. However, I have since learned that it's not appropriate. The Zhen family has a close relationship with the Pei family, and their daughter is a childhood friend of yours. They even had a verbal engagement. However, due to the war, it was postponed. Now that I know the truth, I can't let this engagement be disrupted. Therefore, I've changed my mind. The Zhen family has done you a favor, and we should repay them, but I'll grant them other rewards, and we'll drop the idea of Feng Tong's suggestion. It won't be discussed in the future."

Yin Tang's expression stiffened slightly. Xiao Lie continued to watch him, his gaze unwavering. After a moment, he asked, "Is there something else you want to say about this matter?"

Xiao Yin Tang maintained eye contact with his father for a moment. He seemed to hesitate and then lowered his eyes, respectfully saying, "I have nothing else to say. What Father Emperor said is correct. Regarding the Zhen family, additional rewards will be appropriate."

Xiao Lie gazed at him, pondering for a moment, and then said, "Excellent. After the completion of tomorrow's enthronement ceremony, I will officially name you as the Crown Prince. The Ministry of Rites will prepare your wedding with Feng Tong. As for concubines, if there are suitable candidates, I will also keep an eye out for you."

...

The next day was the day of the new emperor's coronation ceremony.

The new dynasty was named "Zhao Ping," with the first year starting on the following New Year's Day. In this year, they continued to use the same era name as the previous reign under the Young Emperor, which was in its seventh year, occurring on the twenty-sixth day of the sixth month.

On this day, the officials from the Ministry of Rites and the Temple of the Grand Preceptor arrived at Huanqiu Palace at three in the morning. By five in the morning, the Nine Ministers, officials holding the seventh rank in the capital and those with the fourth rank from other provinces or higher, had all gathered. They lined up solemnly on both sides of Huanqiu Palace. Thousands of commanders and officers formed a path from the imperial palace to the northern gate of the imperial city. They stood at intervals, ensuring order and security. The path was opened from the palace to Huanqiu, where the common people knelt on both sides, waiting for the auspicious time to welcome the new emperor's departure from the palace and to perform the Heaven Announcing Ritual.

According to the time determined by the Qin tianjian Observatory, the new emperor was to leave the palace at the hour of "Si" (snake, 9:00-11:00 am). He would arrive at Huanqiu at "Si" with three-quarters (10:30 am) to perform the Heaven Announcing Ritual.

At this moment, there were just two quarters left until "Si" when the emperor was supposed to depart. Emperor Xiao Lie was dressed in imperial robes, wearing a dragon-crowned headpiece. He exuded an imperial aura that was so commanding that it made people hesitant to look him directly in the eye. He was seated within the Chengguang Hall. The Ministry of Rites Secretary, Zhang Shiyong, and the Temple of the Grand Preceptor official, Lu Qi, sat beside him. They observed the emperor sitting there, seemingly waiting for someone. They exchanged glances, feeling puzzled.

Another half quarter passed. Zhang Shiyong considered reminding the emperor of the approaching auspicious time. Suddenly, they heard hurried footsteps outside the hall. Cui Yinshui rushed into the hall like a gust of wind. In an instant, he slid down on both knees on the golden-bricked floor and joyfully announced, "Reporting to Your Majesty, Minister Pei has returned to the capital! He is waiting right outside the hall!"

The Emperor immediately stood up, his eyebrows relaxed, and a faint smile appeared on his face. He ordered, "Summon him quickly!"

Cui Yinshui responded with a quick "Yes" and swiftly left the hall. A short while later, accompanied by the sound of steady footsteps, Zhang Shiyong and Lu Qi turned to see a young man. Bathed in the early morning sunbeams that streamed through the hall's entrance, he crossed the threshold into the Chengguang Hall.

He appeared as if he had just returned from a long journey, dusty and travel-worn, with a faint trace of weariness between his brows. Nevertheless, his eyes shone brightly, clear and lively, like the full moon and a gentle breeze. He strode confidently, displaying a remarkable demeanor that, in the entire court of Great Wei, only rivaled that of Pei You'an, the young minister who had once made a name for himself in the capital many years ago. Although years had passed since their last meeting, the dashing youth had now grown into a mature young man, but Zhang Shiyong and Lu Qi recognized him immediately. While they were initially surprised, they quickly understood the reason for the Emperor's anticipation.

The person the new Emperor had been waiting for had finally arrived.

Pei You'an followed Emperor Xiao Lie into the inner hall and immediately prostrated before him, performing the three kneels and nine kowtows as per court etiquette. After rising, he said, "Yesterday, as I approached the capital, I learned of Your Majesty's impending coronation ceremony. I traveled throughout the night and arrived at the city gates this morning. The commanders informed me of Your Majesty's orders, which were to be presented immediately upon my arrival. I feared that this might delay Your Majesty's auspicious timing, and I couldn't make myself presentable in time. I beg Your Majesty's pardon if I appear disheveled."

Emperor Xiao Lie placed his hand on Pei You'an's shoulder and expressed his joy, saying, "We knew you would arrive on time. How was your journey?"

"Fortunately, it was uneventful, and I was able to fulfill Your Majesty's orders without delay. Thank you for your consideration. If you don't mind, I would like to rest tonight and present my report to you in detail tomorrow."

"Please take your time and rest. There's no need to rush. A few days' delay won't matter," reassured Emperor Xiao Lie.

Outside the hall, faint sounds of bells could be heard. The moment when the Emperor would leave the palace to perform the Heaven Announcing Ritual at Huanqiu Palace was drawing near, now only a quarter away.

"You An!" Emperor Xiao Lie called out to Pei You'an just as he was about to speak. His expression turned serious.

"If Your Majesty has something to say, please go ahead," Pei You'an replied.

Emperor Xiao Lie paced a few steps inside the hall, his face filled with solemnity. "You An, I had initially planned to leave this throne empty, with the intention that if there were any news of the Young Emperor in the future, the throne would be his. However, on that day, officials from both civil and military sectors fervently advised against it, and I found it difficult to refuse. Do you have any objections to this decision?"

Emperor Xiao Lie gazed intently at Pei You'an as he spoke.

Pei You'an smiled faintly and respectfully replied, "Your Majesty, even though I am on the road, I have had the chance to read the petitions posted at the city gates. One of them contains the phrase, 'The way of the Great Dao is to make the world a commonwealth.' I endorse this sentiment. The sages of old understood that the world does not belong to a single individual; it is the collective responsibility of all the people. Your Majesty has taken the throne in accordance with the will of Heaven. As you govern, if you select the wise and capable, and if you bring peace and happiness to the people, why would I hold any objections?"

Emperor Xiao Lie's eyes shone brightly as he laughed heartily. "I knew that you are my right arm! I have prepared ceremonial attire for you. Change into it, and accompany me to Huanqiu Palace. Together, we shall witness the grand coronation ceremony!"

Pei You'an expressed his gratitude and was about to exit when he was called back.

Emperor Xiao Lie smiled and said, "There's one more thing I want you to know. The daughter of the Zhen family in Quanzhou is currently in the capital. Last night, your grandmother met with me and requested your marriage to her. I agreed, and the wedding will take place soon. Are you satisfied with this arrangement?"

Pei You'an's gaze shifted slightly, and after a brief pause, he replied, "I am satisfied. I thank Your Majesty for your great favor."

His tone was respectful.

...

The attire Emperor Xiao Lie bestowed upon Pei You'an included the Eight-Beam Jade Crown, a red silk robe with green edges, a leather belt with jade ornaments, white socks, and black shoes. This was the highest-ranking noble attire in the Great Wei Dynasty.

On that day, Pei You'an, accompanying the new emperor, appeared at the Huanqiu Palace to witness the beginning of a new era for the Great Wei Dynasty. In this extraordinary manner, after many years, he returned to the public eye and made his presence felt in the imperial court.

After the return from Huanqiu Palace, the officials of the court paid their respects, and civil and military officials gathered before the imperial throne to perform the three kneels and nine kowtows before Emperor Xiao Lie. After the elaborate rituals were completed, the Ministry of Rites issued two edicts the next day.

The first edict concerned the marriage of the Crown Prince and Lady Zhang Fengtong.

The second edict was a decree announcing the marriage between Pei You'an, the eldest son of the Duke of Wei, and Zhen Jiafu, the daughter of the Zhen family in Quanzhou.

The news spread quickly, and after several years of obscurity, the Duke of Wei's residence was now bustling with visitors who came to offer their congratulations. The entrance of the estate was almost trampled due to the continuous flow of well-wishers. Likewise, the previously inconspicuous mansion of the Zhen family in the capital had become a center of attention.

The wedding date for both decrees was set for the same day, the sixteenth day of the following month, and the Ministry of Rites and the Bureau of Ceremony were tasked with organizing the grand event.
