The memorial service for the deceased lasts for seven days. On the seventh day, after the completion of the rituals, the memorial tablets are placed in the temple to receive everlasting blessings.

Tonight, Mrs. Pei, the two daughters-in-law, and Pei Quan will stay behind to continue the vigil for the late Duke. They will fulfill three days of vigil, and the younger generation can return home in the evening after completing their daytime duties, and return the next day.

Pei You'an and Jiafu are leaving together, but Pei You'an still has some matters to attend to inside. While he remains indoors, Jiafu stands by the stele pavilion near the temple gate, accompanied by maids and guest monks, waiting. After a while, she sees Pei Xiuzhi and Zhou Jiao'e coming out first.

The atmosphere between them seems completely different from the argument they had at noon. Pei Xiuzhi is now following behind Zhou Jiao'e, without a trace of anger on his face.

The men of the Pei family were all talented individuals. Pei Xiuzhi had once been vibrant and full of spirit, but at this moment, that spirit seemed to have vanished entirely. He appeared as defeated as a beaten rooster, utterly dejected from head to toe. In contrast, Zhou Jiao'e was the complete opposite. In just one afternoon, she had regained her rosy complexion and carried herself with confidence. Accompanied by a wet nurse, Brother Quan, and seven or eight maids, they emerged in a bustling group. When they saw Jiafu standing in front of the monument pavilion, the maidservants called her "Big Madam." Zhou Jiao'e paused briefly, turned her head, tugged at the corners of her mouth, revealing a half-smile, and greeted Jiafu as "sister-in-law." Then she glanced at her husband beside her, patted her lower back, and coquettishly said, "Xiuzhi, I'm so tired. We still have a long way to go downhill, and I can't take another step."

The Ci'en Temple was located on the mountainside, but not at a high elevation. From the mountain gate down to the foot of the mountain, there was a section of approximately several hundred steps.

The maidservants on the side seemed to be suppressing their laughter.

Pei Xiuzhi's face flushed red with embarrassment, unable to meet Jiafu's gaze. He swallowed his shame and ordered the servants to bring a sedan chair to escort his second wife down the mountain.

The sedan chair arrived quickly, and Zhou Jiao'e raised her chin as she approached it. When the servants opened the curtain and invited her to board, she remained motionless, ignoring the hand offered by the maid beside her. Instead, her eyes were fixed on Pei Xiuzhi.

Pei Xiuzhi reluctantly reached out to help her up. Zhou Jiao'e looked pleased with herself, casting a glance at Jiafu before taking her husband's hand and bending down to enter the sedan chair. Brother Quan, seeing this, insisted on riding in the sedan chair too, but there was no response from inside.

Pei Xiuzhi, feeling helpless, was about to order another sedan chair to be brought when Zhou Jiao'e lifted the curtain with a smile and said, "Children need to exercise more, unlike delicate women like me. It's good for their legs to walk more. If he really can't walk, I'll come down and let Quan Ge sit!" With that, she gestured as if to disembark.

Pei Xiuzhi quickly intervened to stop it, instructing the sedan bearers to proceed while turning to instruct the nanny to carry Quan Ge down. Despite Quan Ge's protests, he was forcibly lifted by the nanny, who covered his mouth, and followed the sedan chair down the mountain steps. Pei Xiuzhi guarded the sedan chair and hurriedly left.

Jiafu watched as the group disappeared from sight, then turned back and saw Pei You'an's figure gradually approaching. She hurriedly went to meet him.

Pei You'an noticed her and quickened his pace, soon reaching her side. He said, "Were you worried? I was delayed just now discussing tomorrow's arrangements with my uncle."

Jiafu shook her head. "It's only been a moment. I'm not worried."

Pei You'an thanked the visiting monk and then led Jiafu down the mountain steps, with Liu Mama and Tan Xiang followed by a few more maidservants. As they descended, they encountered a slightly raised step. Pei You'an paused and reached out his hand to her. Jiafu's delicate fingers lightly grasped his sleeve, and he, in turn, held her hand, guiding her across the step until they stood firmly on the ground.

"Watch your step,"

He whispered softly, then gently released her hand.

But one of Jiafu's soft fingers still hooked onto his, reluctant to let go. Their sleeves hung down, covering the intertwined fingers from view, and from behind, it was difficult to discern anything clearly, except for the fact that they were standing very close to each other.

Pei You'an tilted his head slightly, casting a glance at the maidservants not far behind them. Then he turned back, seeming to hesitate for a moment, but ultimately didn't withdraw his hand, allowing her to continue holding onto it.

Quietly, Jiafu gradually tightened her grip on his finger, holding it firmly.

Pei You'an's gaze remained forward, his expression unchanged, but a faint smile seemed to flicker in his eyes. And so, with her hand still hooked onto his, they continued on, descending the steps together.

The coachman noticed the arrival of the master and mistress and hurriedly pulled the carriage closer. After it came to a stop, he placed a footstool for Jiafu to step onto. Pei You'an assisted her inside, then followed suit, settling in beside her. The servants took their seats in the carriage behind, and the two carriages set off towards the city.

The golden hues of the evening sun bathed the entire countryside, casting long shadows of farmers returning home with their plows and oxen in the distance. The curtain on one side of the carriage was rolled up, allowing a beam of sunlight to filter in and illuminate Pei You'an.

He gestured for Jiafu to lean on his shoulder to rest, while he himself took a book in hand, slightly lowering his gaze to read.

Following his suggestion, Jiafu leaned against his arm, closing her eyes. However, her mind was filled with the words she had heard earlier in the day about his background.

Bearing such a background was undoubtedly a shame and profound pain for someone who was once noble like him, and I imagine even he himself is deeply troubled by it. Jiafu naturally wouldn't rashly tell him what she heard during the day.

She wanted to comfort him, to let him know her feelings for him, but she didn't know how to start.

She quietly opened her eyes and stole a glance at him.

He was focused on the book in his hands, the evening light casting a golden glow on his slightly lowered eyelashes, making them appear as if dusted with fine gold powder, tempting her to reach out and touch.

"What's wrong? Do you have something on your mind?"

His eyelashes flickered slightly as he turned his face.

Jiafu shook her head.

Pei You'an lightly tapped his forehead with the corner of the book and spoke with a slightly apologetic tone, "I got too engrossed in reading and ignored you? My bad. Blame it on me for being inattentive."

He set the book aside and reached out to her. Jiafu immediately climbed onto his lap as he held her, lifting the curtain on the side to gaze out at the wilderness beyond the window. He said, "You've been married to me for quite some time now. I've been busy with this and that, leaving you alone at home. I've never taken you out for leisure. You must be feeling bored. In a little while, when the weather cools down a bit, I'll take you to Yuquan Mountain in the southeast of the city for a stroll. I remember climbing there when I was young. The scenery is nice, and I haven't been there in many years."

"Okay, okay." Jiafu nodded eagerly.

Pei You'an glanced at her, smiling, and patted her head gently, saying softly, "If you're tired, you can rest against me for a while. I won't read anymore; I'll just hold you."

Jiafu murmured in agreement, wrapping her arms around his waist and resting her face on his chest, slowly closing her eyes.

The carriage swayed gently, and Jiafu curled up in his embrace. Unbeknownst to her, she drifted off to sleep. She couldn't tell how long she had slept until he gently woke her up with a soft pat. Opening her eyes, she realized they had arrived.

Pei You'an helped her down from the carriage, and they went inside. The gatekeeper quickly approached them, saying, "Master, Lady Chi from Baihe Temple has sent someone to inform you that her younger brother has greatly improved after taking the medicine you prescribed last time. However, his appetite has deteriorated again in recent days. They had asked Physician Hu to come and see him, but it didn't seem to help. They are wondering when you might have time to visit and apply your miraculous treatment again."

He then presented another scroll wrapped in a brocade cover adorned with floral patterns.

"Lady Chi also sent over this scroll, saying it's a beautifully transcribed sutra for the late Duke's blessings in the afterlife."

Pei You'an took it, opened the sutra, glanced through it, closed it, then took Jiafu back to their room to change into attire suitable for going out.

Jiafu was initially a bit groggy from sleep, but now she was fully awake. Seeing him preparing to go out and sensing his gaze on her, she suppressed any unusual feelings and took the initiative to say, "Taking care of your health is important. You should go quickly. Just make sure not to tire yourself out, and remember to come back early to rest."

Pei You'an asked her, "Are you still tired?"

Jiafu looked a bit dazed and shook her head. Pei You'an slowly suggested, "If you're not tired, would you like to accompany me? It's good to have company on the road."

Jiafu was momentarily stunned but quickly recovered, her smile blossoming instantly as she nodded and said, "Alright, then I'll accompany my elder cousin..."

Pei You'an had already left, saying, "Get dressed and come out. I'll go tidy up our things."

.....

As night fell, the carriage stopped in front of the gate of Baihe Guan. Pei You'an instructed someone to announce their arrival, and soon a young nun came out to escort them. She led them inside until they reached the entrance of the Taisu Hall. After a brief moment, the young nun hurried inside and returned with a bright lamp. Chi Hanzhen emerged from the door, ready to greet Pei You'an, but her gaze suddenly shifted to Jiafu standing beside him. She paused for a moment, slightly taken aback, before halting her steps.

Pei You'an led Jiafu up and smiled, "Today, accompanying my wife to Ci'en Temple and returning together, I happened to receive a message from Master Chi. We decided to come along the way. I have also received Master Chi's handwritten scripture, and I will present it to my grandmother on another occasion with sincerity."

Master Chi's gaze finally shifted away from the smiling Jiafu, her expression steadying as she replied, "Mr. Pei, there's no need for courtesy. Your assistance to my younger brother is invaluable. I happened to hear about Duke Pei's memorial celebration and thought, as a monk, I have nothing to offer but this handwritten scripture. Please come in, both of you." With that, she quickly turned and led them inside, instructing a young nun to bring tea while Pei You'an mentioned he would go see the patient first.

Chi Hanzhen led him inside.

The child's complexion had improved significantly since Jiafu last saw him. Pei You'an examined the child carefully and looked at the prescription given by the physician from last time. He concluded that the issue was likely caused by a gastrointestinal imbalance due to the previous prescription. He suggested adjusting the ingredients appropriately and slowly restoring balance, assuring that the child should recover in a few days. The physician's prescription aligned with his own thoughts, so he instructed Chi Hanzhen to follow it when preparing the medicine.

Chi Hanzhen looked slightly ashamed and whispered her thanks, apologizing for the sudden intrusion.

Pei You'an reassured her, "There's no need to feel guilty. Though you have become a nun, I still regard you as my younger sister. If you ever have any troubles in the future, regardless of the matter, feel free to seek me out. If I'm not available, you can approach my wife. She will also do her best to assist you."

Jiafu was momentarily taken aback, but when she saw Pei You'an looking at her, she quickly regained her composure and stood by his side, nodding and smiling, "Husband's words echo my own thoughts. Lady Chi Hanzhen's character is as lofty as the white cranes in the clouds. I have always respected her. Please do not feel constrained by worldly conventions."

Chi Hanzhen gazed steadily at Jiafu, momentarily speechless. Pei You'an then gathered their things and, with Jiafu, bid farewell and left.

As they departed, Chi Hanzhen watched their retreating figures until they disappeared, her gaze empty. She then slowly returned to her meditation chamber, closed the door, and could no longer hold back her tears, covering her face with her hands as tears streamed down her cheeks.

Her apricot-yellow robe slipped down from her wrist, revealing several sinister scars on her snow-white wrist, each etched by the tip of a blade. Old wounds unhealed, new wounds added.

Once a remarkable flower in the world, now fallen into the mud.

He was as bright as the moon, as resolute as autumn frost, a true gentleman like no other in the world. She used to look down upon the woman he married, but tonight, standing beside that woman, she deeply sensed her own insignificance for the first time, to the point where she couldn't find a place to hide her shame.

He and she were meant to be together, unmatched in the world. Clearly, she already knew deep down that he harbored no romantic feelings for her, yet why couldn't even the pain of a blade slicing through her skin dispel the demons in his heart?

....

As Jiafu and Pei You'an returned home, it was already late at night. After bathing and changing clothes, they climbed into bed. Pei You'an tucked her in and kissed her gently.

"You're such a sleepy cat. If you don't get enough sleep, you'll have dark circles under your eyes, and everyone will think I mistreat you. We have to get up early tomorrow. Just go to sleep," he said, closing his eyes.

Jiafu gazed at his face, but she had no desire to sleep at all. Sometimes she thought about the events of the day, and sometimes she pondered the scene just now. Feeling an overwhelming urge, she reached out with her soft arms, wrapped them around his neck, and brought her lips close to his ear, whispering softly, "Big cousin, from now on, if you ever feel sad or troubled, don't keep it to yourself. Tell Fu'er, and Fu'er will comfort you and cherish you."
