Chapter .410

“Alright. I guess it is my turn.” I started.

With Unika having made another contract, and it being with an A-rank multi-tailed fox, I was itching for a new contract of my own.

“Pan. Do you think you could synchro with me? I want to feel what picking targets feels like.” I requested. “... and it should make me understand and be able to speak beast.” I added.

“... I’ve never actually done that, but I think I can.” Pan admitted. “First blessed and all of that.”

“Well at least it isn’t the first time for me, so one of us knows what to expect.”

“True. I guess you are the best choice to be my first.” Pan said, as she came to me.

“... why do you have to make it sound so…” I cut off my sentence, because Pan jumped at me and hugged me tightly. Her form then began to assimilate with me.

As it did, I felt some strange sensations, mainly around my lower back and on my head. Luckily they stopped after a few seconds.

(... did I do this right?) I heard Pan asking inside my head.

(Yeah. It did feel just a bit different from the water and nature spirit synchroes that I’m used to, but that might be because you are a superior spirit.) I told her.

“Err. Brian.” I heard Unika calling for me, but her voice sounded a bit too loud. “... is it normal that you just changed races? Does that happen when you do that synchro thing with a spirit?”

“Change race? What do you mean?” I asked.

“You have ears and a tail, like a cat-folk.” Unika answered.

“I do?” I questioned.

Okay. I need a mirror. Let’s bring one out of Storage real quick.

And as I had a look at myself, I indeed had a pair of cat ears on my head, as well as a tail coming out from where my tailbone is.

“Oh. That’s kind of cool.” I said.

“... so, is that normal?” Unika asked.

“I think so, yes.” I confirmed. “Usually when I synchro with a spirit, I just get surrounded by the element the spirit is. So with water I get some water clothing or armor, with nature, I get vines that crawl around my body. So with a beast spirit, I get ears and a tail.”

“... Well, if you say so.”

“Would be interesting to know what happens to someone who is already a beast-folk. Would you grow a second tail? Or maybe your tail and ears would just become more pronounced?”

(I can have my greater give her a blessing so that we can find out.)

(Mutant? Do you think he will agree?)

(He will if I ask him. Also, I like that name. I think I’ll change him to be the greater spirit of mutant beasts.) Pan said.

(... well, whatever you want. Now let’s get on with this.)

We spent a bit of time looking at things through the dimensional telescope, until we found something that Pan demanded I tame.

(Brian! Brian! Brian!) She yelled in my head. (That’s a Fenrir! You have to try to make a contract with it!)

(... I mean, it is an SS-rank and should be even more powerful than Himeśaila, but why specifically a Fenrir? There are other SS-rank monsters.)

(Fenrirs are so majestic!)

(... they are just large wolves.) I pointed out.

(Exactly. They are the perfect beast. They don’t have to be special to be special, which is why they are super special!)

(... well, as it is an SS-rank and because you feel so strongly about this, sure, why not.) I agreed with Pan’s suggestion. (So, how much mana do we need for this?)

(Umm… Just a second …. remember to carry the one. … I think about 6000 mana will do.)

(Okay. Laura?)

(20 meter circle takes 6400 mana. It is the best choice.)

(Thanks.)

I quickly told Unika what we were planning to do, after all, she can’t hear our mental communications.

I then went to the 20 meter summoning circle, which is the second largest we have, with the largest being 25 meters and taking 10,000 mana to fill, and began to fill it with mana.

I suppose I am lucky that I have enough mana to fill up the 20 meter circle, so I didn’t need a refill while I was filling up the circle.

But it is a different thing after the circle is full. I am summoning a Fenrir, and I’d rather not have any problems with one when I’m only at 3000 mana. And Pan is still draining away my mana as well.

The giant beast was so large that the massive circle under its feet was too small to hold all of it, which did scare me just a bit, as the circle is meant to hold the beast so that it cannot harm the summoner while the contract is being made. Naturally if you step into the circle, like I was going to do when I was going to fight Himeśaila, it will no longer protect you from the monster you just summoned.

Well, let’s just quickly get a few cards from Collection in case this thing attacks us. And I do have my set cards ready to go, so even if it does, they will stop the first assault.

But luckily for us, the summoned Fenrir seemed kind of calm. It just stood in the circle, seemingly waiting for me to talk first.

“... Hello, mister Fenrir. Do you understand me?” I asked.

{Yes.} I heard his answer and considering that I understood him, I take this as a confirmation that I do understand the beast language.

“Good. I want to make a contract with you. Would you accept?”

{If you feed me.} The massive wolf said.

“... is raw meat fine or do you want it cooked?”

{Any meat is good meat, as long as there is enough.} The Fenrir stated.

“Alright. Then I can do it.” I said, as I opened up Storage.

I began to pull out whatever meat I happened to have handy and thankfully I have a ton of different monster meats. And yes, I made sure to avoid any wolves and especially the Fenrir meat I have.

As I kept piling meat in front of it, the Fenrir began to drool, but despite clearly wanting to chow down, it waited for permission.

“It’s alright. You can eat.” I told the wolf, and as soon as I did, it began to gulf down on the food I offered.

The wolf ate a bit over 5000 kilos of meat before it was satisfied. Honestly, I’m not sure if I expected more of less. I think less, because of its size, but at the same time, that is a massive amount of meat. I mean, that is like 20 cows worth of meat. But for a wolf that is like 15 times larger than a standard wolf, it really isn’t that unreasonable.

{Thank you for the meal. I didn’t expect you to be able to feed me.} The wolf said.

“So you are fine with the contract?” I asked.

{Yes. But every time you summon me, have some food ready. Next time, it won’t have to be this much.}

“... alright. I’ll be sure to stock up.” I answered.

We then quickly worked on the details of the contract like how much mana I need to use to summon the Fenrir and so on. It wasn’t nearly as efficient as my contract with Himeśaila, but it is still pretty good all things considered.

{And I’ll be expecting a name when you summon me next time.} The Fenrir said, as he disappeared.

… okay. So he doesn’t have a name. Good to know.

And yes. He is a male. Trust me. I saw.

Since both Unika and I got ourselves new contracts, I decided to call it a day. So I undid my synchro with Pan, only to face another surprise.

“Your tail and ears didn’t disappear.” Unika noted.

I quickly touched the ears on top of my head to confirm.

“... I suppose so.”

“... Is that my fault?” Pan asked.

“No clue.”

(It is because of your unique-racial skill.) Laura pointed out.

“Oh. Okay. I now know why.” I said. I then opened up the menu of my One of Every Race.

One of Every Race

Normal Races Class Races Special Races

Human Swordsman Dragon Hearted
Advanced Human Guardian Spiritual Human
Cat-folk Sorcerer Spiritual Beast-folk
  Summoner Spiritual Being
  User or Rare Skills

[Change to selected Race]

Yeah. That does answer it. Kind of. I’m a Cat-folk now. And I also have Spiritual Beast-folk as a new race, which is basically Spiritual Human, but I’ll probably keep my cat ears and tail.

I changed myself back to User or Rare Skills (Advanced Human), and as I did, I felt a similar sensation as when my tail and ears first came in. I then quickly ran my hand across my head to confirm that they were indeed gone.

“Okay. Now they are gone.” I said.

“... a shame. You looked cute with them.” Pan stated.

“... they were kind of cute.” Unika agreed.

“... Well, I might use that race from time to time, so I guess you’ll see them again. I mean, I should be able to get some racial skills while using it.” I said. “And now I really need to try out that Beast Union skill. If I got a new race, well two really, from just that, I might get new races when I union with monsters.”

With Pan still here, because she wanted to see the skill her blessing gave me, I headed for our stables. After showing some love to both Glad and Rani, I used my Beast Union skill on Rani. For those that forgot, Rani is the horse that I tamed.

Becoming one with a horse was … an interesting experience. I had to rely on her a lot so that we could move around, but because of my stats being added to hers, Rani was having difficulties controlling her speed.

I ended up having to use Telekinesis as a sort of break on us, so that Rani wouldn’t run into a wall or something.

After I undid the union, I checked my unique-racial again, but I didn’t have a new race, so I can’t just turn into a horse or anything.

I then unioned with Glad, my hippogriff, which was a somewhat of a better experience. Largely because Glad is stronger than Rani, so the stat increase didn’t bother him quite as much.

And I have to say, flying around with an actual pair of wings is a ton of fun. It really made me want to unlock a race that has wings.

Because of that, I asked Pan to transform into a beast that has wings, and she turned herself into a griffon. Glad wasn’t the biggest fan of Pan in that form, but luckily I was able to hold him back.

I then asked the griffon Pan to synchro with me again, trying to see if I can cheat new races for myself using this method, but I just ended up turning into a Spiritual Beast-folk with cat features. So I guess I can only cheat two races for myself with Pan’s help.

I then let Pan go back to the spirit world, as everything I had planned for the day was done for now.

I then left Unika to get used to her new fox summon, as I decided to do the same. I’ll just do it inside HomeBase instead of at the citadel. I want to see how powerful my new Fenrir is.

After calling him out, the first thing I did was name my wolf. I came up with a … well, it is a name. I named my wolf Gleipnir or Nir for short.

It naturally comes from Gleipnir, the Fetters of Fenrir.

Now I was just a bit hesitant to name my Fenrir after something that in Norse mythology was used to bind the Fenrir, but I also liked the name and Nir didn’t oppose it, so it must not be a thing in this world. And yes, I do know a bit about Norse mythology. Don’t blame me that I looked a bit into it because of the Nordic archetype.

I like big boss monsters, okay? Even if the Nordic gods, or should I call them the Aesir gods, aren’t all that good because their effects are decent at best and they are difficult to summon. I still really like their designs.

I then used Beast Union on Nir, becoming one with him. And again, it was fun. Like really fun. Come on. Who doesn’t want to be a giant wolf that can just stomp on everything, chomp whatever happens to get in their way, and even throw out breath attacks like you were a dragon.

Yes, Nir can use elemental breath attacks. Wind, Water, Dark and Lightning to be specific. He can also use magic of those attributes, well Lightning isn’t an attribute in the traditional sense, but still.

After I undid my union with Nir, I fed him some more meat from Storage before sending him off. And like with Rani and Glad, I didn’t unlock a new race from the union.

Finally I summoned Himeśaila and unioned with her. And my bias might be showing, as Himeśaila was the best.

Despite being weaker than Nir, she combined the best parts of both Nir and Glad. She is powerful, she has wings, she is amazing at ice magic. Dragons just are the best.

And like every time before, after I undid my union, I didn’t get a new race. But something else did end up happening, but it happened to my status.

Few of my skills got levels, Draconic Magic because I was using it while I was in an union with Himeśaila, Advanced Summoning Magic because of the new contract and Beast Union because I was playing with it.

I also got a new title, SS-Rank Summoner, for summoning and forming a summoning contract with an SS-rank monster. Having the title should make getting new summoning contracts easier and I can get them with petter terms, but I’ve not had any difficulty with that thus far, so I really don’t know how necessary the title is. I’ll take it, but it is just … kind of there.

nro_8 So I changed how the One of Every Race menu is laid out. I hope it is a bit more clear now, and it also isn't just a big list. The races are also divided into normal, class and special races. And as a reminder, Brian can combine any normal race with any class race, but special races cannot be combined with other races.
