Emili spent the next week listening and memorising.   She mostly spent her time near the government buildings, trying to overhear stray thoughts and conversations to get an idea of how she could get the office workers there to put her information into the databases.   But she also kept an ear out for the general population, she overheard many interesting stuff that was happening around the city. Supposedly secretly.   The mob boss who ran the forgery she went to has taken over a large part of the New York underworld, building his criminal empire. There was a sub-sect of the Hand in here, training up new initiates in Chinatown. She also noticed some people with weird minds running around with stronger psyches too, but they were only puppets to something sinister. She realized these were probably the previously mentioned ninjas of the Hand. Another faction of criminals and supervillains. Another faction added to her 'Avoid at all costs' list, right after the good Professor.   There were also a few that were similar to them but did not give off the ominous vibe and licked the mind-controlling. Those were probably normal Chi practitioners like Iron Fist and Stick. While probably not intentional their mind felt more robust and reinforced compared to normal humans, even though they focused on their bodies first and not their minds.   She also noticed another group of people, with similar characteristics. They had a 'notice-me-not' type of suggestion aura around them, very similar to her own even if she could see it was crude and static compared to her own. She wondered for a bit whether these people were a group of natural telepaths or aliens. That hypothesis broke down when she observed one of them waving his hand in a circle before a rift opened in space which he swiftly stepped through. After him, the rift closed just as quickly as it opened. Emilia was stunned for a good minute by that.   *Magic is real,* she thought. It shouldn't have been surprising that if cultivating ninjas were running around so would dimensional sorcerers.   She recalled all sorcerers being capable of minor telepathy and telekinesis, which explained their comparatively massive psychic presence.   They stood out like a giant among dwarves, along the same analysis the chi dudes would be normal humans. She also noticed a few peculiar people, they were all different and distinct but similar in a few parts too. She categorized them to be mutants. She didn't personally recognize any of the people.   She also got all she wanted from listening in on the office workers and their thoughts, she got a good idea of how she would have to do this.   Luckily this was still 2007. Cybersecurity was severely lacking plus large parts of the database were spotty, and many documents were only kept on paper. She knew what she needed to do for a while now, all this information gathering was only so she could be certain she wouldn't be caught while doing it. Now all there was left to do was do it.   She was soon sitting in front of a man working in customer support, he was a young man probably a few years older than Emilia. His overall apathy seemed to abate as she sat down. Emilia felt a brief flash of lust and shame flash through him, as he corrected his posture and put on a smile before asking, " How can I assist you today miss?"   Emilia didn't let the foreign emotions affect her as she smiled back and answered him, "I would like to check if my identifications match those in your database Mr..." She took a glance at his nameplate,"...Prescott," she said while taking out her documents from a backpack and passing them to him. She refrained from smiling at him if the man she used to fabricate her information into the database wanted to take her out on a date that would not look good. It would also be harder to make him forget her after all this.   She overheard that security cameras wouldn't record today for a few hours as they were doing maintenance on the security system so she didn't need to worry about there being a recording about her here.   The man tried to sit even straighter at hearing her say his name and took the offered documents before quickly identifying them. "Alright, I will be back with you in a few minutes Miss Novak, at max 15 minutes to go through all of them. Please be patient in the meantime," he said before retreating to a backroom, containing a terminal to the database. Emilia just relaxed in her chair as she closed her eyes. Her full focus is now on her psychic powers. She spread her aura around the whole building, quickly filtering out unimportant people. She kept her attention on the security personnel and the lady in charge of this agency building.   The majority of her focus turned to the clerk Mr Prescott, he just finished identifying himself to the terminal. She pushed strong mental suggestions onto his mind, the distance proving a bit more straining for such a complex suggestion.   The clerk now instead of verifying her documents went to load all of it into the database, carefully changing dates and of the creation of her documents. By the time he was finished, no one could even tell that data wasn't there for decades already. Emilia breathed a sigh as she didn't see any sign of alert in the auras of the security personnel. It seemed she didn't get caught this time.   "Here are your documents Miss Novak, I have checked them over and all of them seem to be matching our database, could I assist you with anything else?" asked the clerk, already forgetting his previous fraudulent actions.   "Not today, thank you for your assistance, Mr Prescott," answered Emilia as she stood. "Goodbye and have a good day," she said before turning to leave, preventing him from asking any other questions.   She felt regret bubbling out of the man behind her as she left the building. Emilia too felt a tinge of regret, he seemed like a kind man and she used him. She might have even taken him up on his offer if she asked her for a date, after weeks of not having anyone to talk to she felt starved for social interactions.   She shook her head a bit to clear her mind, it wasn't to be.   "What got you so frowny today Chuck?" asked Logan as he slumped down in an armchair, taking in the frowning face of Professor Xavier.   "I can't find it," he muttered, almost growling in a rare show of frustration for the usually serene Professor.   "What?" asked back Logan, a bit confused about what got his old friend worked up like that.   "Not what but who, there is a newly awakened mutant running around while managing to hide from me. Even while using the Cerebro," said the bald man, leaning back in his wheelchair. Trying to banish his frustration.   "How is that possible, isn't Raven the only one capable of that?" wondered Logan aloud.   "By herself, yes, but I can't sense Erik either while he is wearing that damned helmet. Even that paranoid Fury managed to make equipment that shields him from my probes," said Charles, feeling a bit ashamed of the fact.   "What do you think about this new one then?" asked Logan, content with acting like a wall for the Prof to bounce ideas off of.   "They have a type of mental shield, it makes them barely detectable and frustratingly slippery. Every time I get a glance they slip out of my sight so fast I thought it was my senses playing tricks on me," said Xavier, releasing a sigh that came out more like a huff, "and they are getting better by the day, I can barely get glimpses even if I focus," he finished before shaking his head.   "What do you think their power is like?" he asked, trying to get the other man back to thinking.   "I am not sure, it is similar to telepathy in its nature but far more instinctual..." he said, considering his powers "...yes, compared to their powers mine looks mechanic like my telepathy is a tool I am using, for them it's their body as much as their hands and feet are. Hmmm, that could mean they have far lesser control over it, maybe it's acting only as a deterrent or shield for them?" wondered Xavier, trying to think about all mutants he had experience with.   "Could that mean they don't even know they are mutants?" asked Logan gruffly, imagining a young mutant not even knowing why other people ignore their existence.   "It could be, but it is unlikely. They advance far too quickly at using their powers it couldn't only be natural," he said, before remembering another fact, "they are probably the ones responsible for the death of a SHIELD Agent too, " he said thinking about the implications of that. Logan was stunned for a bit, "How could a newly awakened mutant with those powers kill one of those?"   Xavier smiled a bit at that, "I am unsure, both of the how or if it was this mutant but no other new mutant has sprung up in New York, and neither did I find anyone who killed the man in the city with Cerebro."   "So they can telepathically attack someone too?" wondered Logan.   "Maybe, it might be triggered like an extreme reaction to danger. The Agent might have been there to 'collect' them, so they retaliated, " he said, face morphing into disgust, not realizing the hypocrisy of it.   "Wouldn't be a first, Scott is still holding a grudge over what happened with Jean, " said Logan, while he had blood trailing down his knuckles from adamantine blades trying to force their way through his skin.   The Professor also looked morose after remembering that and shook his head, "there will always be parents who forsake their children because they are different, they didn't know what would happen to her if SHIELD took her" he said, trying to justify what the Grey family did to Jean.   "Do not justify it Chuck, they wanted to send their daughter to jail for her powers, so she wouldn't be a 'danger' to the world, " said the centuries-old man gruffly, he had seen many atrocities but parents forsaking their children still got his blood boiling.   Charles only shook his head at that, not even trying to empathise with the Greys anymore.   "A mutant like this would be a prime recruiting target for an infiltration agent for any secret organization, even Magneto might try to brainwash them if he gets to them first," said Logan.   "Yes, we mustn't let others exploit this young mutant, they should be terrified and alone right now, " said the Professor sagely.   To this, Logan only nodded before raising to his feet, "Call me if you need me to go collect them, Chuck, I will go out and run for a bit, gotta blow off some steam."   "Alright Logan, I will notify you as soon as I find this elusive mutant," said the bald man, already closing his eyes to focus on searching again.
