Interlude 01

"This is......"

"That's impossible......."

Murmurs echoed across a large circular chamber illuminated by dim blue lights. There sat seven individuals. They were veiled completely black, as if the color had just been projected over their whole figures. They were seated near the walls of the chamber, overlooking the circular floor in the center of the chamber on elevated seats. Very spooky. Seven of the world's most powerful individuals, be it in wealth, power or knowledge, all gathered by the Visionary to unite the scattered Origins.

The Origins. Many decades ago, in the early 20th Century, a number of people still unknown today, scattered from all walks of life all across the world, one day awoke superhuman gifts. They breathed fire, could create objects, made wonderous devices, and the whole assortment of the illogical and impossible had just been shown possible. Such gifts were called by various different names, but eventually they became standardised as simply "Abilities". With no prophecy, no vision, no destiny or any purpose, these people, the Origins, had initially learnt to keep to themselves, adapting and hiding their abilities. Well, those who lived in normal circumstances anyway, since those in ...unique circumstances, such as a starving orphan or war refugee, quickly took to using their newfound gift to survive and adapt. But still, they kept themselves relatively hidden. Well, as hidden as someone who could breathe fire could be.

As the century progressed, their numbers didnt dwindle. New people kept Awakening, although in small numbers, whilst others were born from Origin parents.

The Origins were still shrouded in mystery. Even almost a century later, by the current year of 2006, not much was really known about our kind. From why and how they kept themselves hidden for long, and how they received their Abilities. Yet everybody here knew better. They knew the truth- no, had been told the truth. Seated at the highest seat amongst the rest in the chamber, sat the Visionary, the Origin who founded the Cordiale. The first ever Origin organisation, that sheltered the hiding Origins both new and old from the ravages of the World Wars, keeping their existence a secret from the rest of the world. Toppling governments, assassinations, blackmail, whatever it took, you know? Just the usual. Through the chaos and tension of the 20th Century, the Cordiale held firm. Held unchallenged. All this under the leadership of seven Origins including the Visionary. Overseers, as they made themselves known.

And now, these all-so-mighty Overseers' attentions were all taken up by a holographic screen hovering in the center of the chamber. The screen displayed what was once an ordinary cave interior, now twisted and bent, with the walls and floor of the cave bent and fragmented unnaturally, as if space and reality around it had been cracked and distorted at the hands of a whimsical god. And that's from somebody who had lived the last few decades as an Origin. Turning my attention back to the screen, at the epicenter of this distortion within the cave was a massive, visible crack mid-air, glowing in an unknown colour that didn't - and shouldn't - exist in the world as we knew it.

"Pft......"

A small chuckle escaped my lips. I couldn't help but imagine half of the Overseers' mouths behind the Identity Veils currently agape at the scene. A scene many of them didn't think possible. Not after all those decades of supremacy ever since the council first formed. A crack had opened. The Visionary's vision had been realised at last, and half of those they had gathered -the seven gathered here- to deal with the event, had been caught completely flat-footed. They were wasted by the belief it was all a delusion, and had used the Cordiale for their own means and ends. But now? They finally know. And soon, not just them, but the whole world would.

The countdown to an apocalypse had started.
