Interlude 02

"Are we certain……this crack is real? I wouldn't want to discourage the possibility this could simply be the usage of an ability."

A voice rang out. It was vaguely male, although distorted, certainly through an advanced voice changer, which I found had become a staple for us Overseers during these meetings. The voice rang from the overhead speakers installed on the ceiling, making it impossible to make out the source from any direction. Still, I could tell who this was. Lowering my head, I turned to face the Overseer who had spoken, who was seated below me across the round chamber. I couldn't make out any of his features thanks to the pre-installed Identity Veil, which darkened all of our figures whilst sitting on the seats of the Council. Rousing me from my thoughts, another augmented voice, this one distinctly female, rang out:

"It most certainly is. It was approximately 6 hours ago,  at 21 43 UTC, 12 January 2006, that the Maya Calendarial, for the first time since its creation, accurately pinpointed a Crack. The coordinates it displayed led us to this point.”

As the voice said that, a set series of latitude and longitude coordinates appeared besides the still holographic image. A 3-dimensional holographic globe also hovered above, with a glowing red dot on its surface. Even though I was pre-informed of the location, I inclined my head forward to get a better view. Specifically, the marker sat on the Indochinese peninsula. Southeast Asia...... around Thailand.

“It took us three phases of inspections. A team eventually arrived at this underground cave system AND this crack, as you can see before you, Ambassador.”

The man in question, the Ambassador, showed no visible or audible response at being called out before the whole council. Boring, but after a decade as colleagues, I knew that was just how he was. After a brief pause, he continued:

“Current situation?”

In response to that, I chirped in whilst grinning. An augmented, distinctive child-like voice rang from the speakers overhead:

“Right, about that… I’ve already sent out Division Michael to secure the perimeter and standby for Council orders. Which I really hope we can send out by this meeting. I’d hate to keep them waiting for too long. They’re good at what they do, but we all know they’re not exactly known for sitting still.”

After finishing, I pat my own shoulders. A well deserved praise in my opinion, for taking the initiative in these kinds of things.

“And you did this before receiving this information……how?”

Even with the augmentation, I could still hear the accusatory tone in his voice, obviously concerned I was butting my head into things I wasn’t meant to be part of. Resting my head on my left hand, I made a waving motion with my right, letting my actions be visible for him to see, even with the Identity veil.

“Relax kiddo…… if you’ve ever been paying attention to the delegation of authority, you would know on top of my duties as Administrator, I’m also responsible for everything related to the first response against the Cracks, officially as Overwatch Superintendent. I was the second person those lab-brains called in on when they detected a crack, after the Engineer of course.”

I inclined my head briefly to the Overseer who had spoken in the distinct female voice, and continued:

“It was only after the initial threat assessment and mobilising Michael, all of which I did, that the Engineer called in this Standard council meeting- not an emergency one, mind you.”

After my speech, I reclined back on my nice, comfy seat. A brief moment afterwards, a new androgynous voice, VERY augmented, rang out from above.

“Well then, now that we all have a grasp of the situation, let's start discussing our plans, shall we?”
