Chapter 23

After Su Jiao left, Lian Xi felt quite sad. He didn’t know what was wrong with the short housemate and why things suddenly became so awkward.

Because he missed his housemate, Lian Xi ordered Su Jiao’s favorite fish-flavored pork rice bowl in the evening and he tasted it: “Huh? It’s really delicious.”

He ate the entire bowl of fish-flavored pork rice bowl, wiped his mouth contentedly, and even helped his housemate lock his door when he returned to his room.

Alas, their housemate fate was too short.

Su Jiao: “…”

I’m not dead yet! Couldn’t you have just asked me to stay some more!

Sleep during the day, broadcast live at night, and go out to catch ghosts in the middle of the night.

There seems to be no difference between the days with Su Jiao and the days without Su Jiao.

He didn’t miss Su Jiao much actually the day he left.

Or the second day either.

Or the third day as well….

Wait actually, who is Su Jiao?

The days passed and then it was mid-September. The scorching sun of midsummer suddenly lost its strength. One day the autumn wind was soothing and the sky was high and clear. Lian Xi caught three little ghosts who were nostalgic for the world last night and sent them forth to reincarnation. They were busy until five o’clock in the morning. Then Lian Xi went home and fell asleep. He slept straight until one o’clock the next afternoon.

After waking up to eat, Lian Xi opened the takeaway app: “Su Jiao said before that the fried rice at this place is delicious…”

His voice stopped abruptly.

After a while, Lian Xi looked up at the locked room at the end of the corridor.

Short housemate, it’s been ten days.

With a long sigh, Lian Xi casually ordered fried rice. After half an hour, the fried rice was delivered to the door. In the empty house, Su Jiao is gone and the Lord Black Reaper goes out around the clock and sometimes stays in his room  for a long time and doesn’t come out. Sitting at the dining table alone, Lian Xi broke apart his chopsticks, lowered his head and ate silently.

In the empty house, he could only hear his own lonely breathing.

Lian Xi was silent for a while, found the phone holder, opened station B, and found a funny video.

On the phone screen, the barrage swept frantically, and loud music came from the sound player.

However, the young man sat at the dining table and ate silently. He watched the video without a trace of expression on his face.

Life seems to be so boring and just like in the past ten years, he had no relatives and no friends. When he was with anyone, he was afraid of cursing the other person. That included not only his parents and grandparents, but also the girl who sat next to him at elementary school, and the eager and helpful class monitor from high school….

His world should be like this.

The fried rice disappeared little by little, and Lian Xi shut down the irritable video.

If life could be a little less boring, how good would it be?

Even if it’s just a little bit different, it’s just a little bit different… Hmm….

Lian Xi: “…”

Looking at the dead fly at the bottom of the boxed lunch which had all four legs upright and in the air, Lian Xi’s philosophical feelings of sadness immediately crashed.

Three seconds later.

A figure dashed towards the kitchen.

“Pei!!!” {Sound of throwing up.}

Not this kind of different!!!

***

“This is unscientific!” After Lian Xi threw the lunch into the trash can, he opened the takeaway app and found the merchant. He carefully read the evaluation of the store.

The score is 4.7, and the monthly sales volume is 3000+.

This score is definitely not low!

Look at the dozens of bad reviews. Some of the food delivery time is slow, some said the store forgot to put hot pepper but not one person said they had eaten bugs from this store.

With a thud in his heart, Lian Xi slowly lowered his head and looked at his hands.

Under the bright sunlight, a pair of thin and slender hands glowed like a jade. The nails are well trimmed and the joints are slightly raised. The splendid sunlight shone on it, as if a faint golden rim was reflected.

White is the skin, pink was the nails, and gold is the color of sunlight.

There was no red.

Even if he didn’t believe in evil, he gritted his teeth and stared carefully for three minutes. Suddenly, he saw a red spot of light that was almost imperceptible to the naked eye flying slowly from his bedroom. Like an old man, the red light flew to Lian Xi’s fingers, circled twice, and finally flew into his nails and became invisible.

Lian Xi: “…”

****!

You have also learned to counter-attack and hide yourself!

Without further ado, Lian Xi ran into the bedroom.

In the past few days, Lian Xi went out to work with Lord Black Reaper every night.  Altogether, they’d collected no less than 30 lonely ghosts. But they hadn’t helped a single one fulfill their last wish.

First of all, not every ghost has a last wish. Most ghosts that wander in the world without reincarnation are silly ghosts with no self-consciousness.

Secondly, even if there are ghosts with last wishes, they are basically trivial and weird little wishes. For example, eating KFC and taking a hot bath.

When people are alive, they always think that they have big dreams such as they want to make a lot of money, want to buy a big house and want to be admitted to a good school, etc.

However, at the moment of death, you’ll realize that after struggling for so many years in the world, you are just an ordinary small fry. The things that you want are to drink hot porridge and eat french fries. After that you can happily go on your way.

And for this kind of irrelevant obsession or last wish, President Lie always sneered at it and didn’t even bat his eyelash.

You want me to satisfy your last wish? Keep dreaming!

Anyway, few of these lonely wild ghosts are like that old lady ghost at the crossroads who had waited eagerly for forty years. Even if they didn’t fulfill their last wish, these ghosts were unlikely to turn into malicious ghosts. President Lie directly sent these little ghosts to reincarnation and they didn’t dare to even utter a single word.

So in the past ten days, Lian Xi did not help a ghost fulfill his last wish.

“Could it be said that even if you don’t fulfill their last wish and just send them to reincarnation, you can still get golden light or a red light?”

Lian Xi felt like his head had grown as large as two.

He was thinking this when suddenly another red light fluttered out of the corner of the room.

Lian Xi’s eyes lit up and he hurried to the place where the red light was overflowing. After finding the source of the red light, he was stunned for a few seconds. He picked up the business card that he had tucked on the bookshelf and read the name clearly…

  “JiaXun Capital President Gao JiaXun”

    Lian Xi: “…”

This life wasn’t worth living anymore!

    …

Gao JiaXun, that is, the guy that lived opposite them, now President Gao.

Last month, Lian Xi was kind and helped him solve an obsession, so that Mr. Gao didn’t have to blame himself or guilt so much. However, he never expected that this service could be contaminated with an evil curse!

“No, President Gao is not a ghost, how come there is a red light?”

“Also President Gao is still a good man, a good man who is righteous and brave.”

Lian Xi was puzzled. He sat in the living room, looking at the thin business card in his hand, lost in thought.

Although golden light and red light have never been based on the quality of ghosts.

Good ghosts and good things may give red light, bad ghosts and bad things may give golden light.

But the problem is…

President Gao was not even a ghost!

Lian Xi was still thinking when, with a creak, the door opened and the handsome and tall man walked out of the room. Lian Xi turned his head and the two of them looked at each other subconsciously, then the man walked straight to the kitchen. When passing by the living room, Lie Chen stopped and saw the business card in Lian Xi’s hand.

Huh.

He raised an eyebrow, sneered, and walked into the kitchen.

Lian Xi: “???”

Coming out of the kitchen, Lie Chen said lightly: “You still have the paper given by that human.”

Lian Xi reacted: “You mean this business card?” Suddenly, a flash of inspiration flashed through Lian Xi’s mind. He asked, “That… Lord Black Reaper, if you are to see President Gao, that is to say, if the person on his business card dies, what will happen to him when he goes to the underworld? What will happen to him in his next life? Will he have good karma because of what he’s done?”

Lie Chen: “En?”

Lian Xi smiled gently: “I’m just curious so I wanted to ask.”

President Lie also smiled: “How many layers of hells are there in the underworld?”

“Ah?” Lian Xi was stunned. “Um, isn’t it eighteen layers?”

Lie Chen: “Oh, so maybe he won’t reincarnate straight away. He might go down and fry in the frying pan for a while first.” {One of the layers of hell is said to be like this.}

Lian Xi: “…”

Don’t think I don’t know that because he scolded you and said you were sick that you want to use a public excuse to solve your private revenge!

Lian Xi thought about it and decided that if Mr. Gao’s deadline was approaching in the future, he will definitely persuade Mr. Gao not to die in Su City. When he died, he definitely must find a good place to die. Since he has offended the Black Reaper in Su City and he wants you to fry until you’re golden and crisp in the frying pan before giving you up!

He kept muttering in his heart, but there was no change on the surface expression of Lian Xi.

Although this Black Reaper was very small-minded and liked to keep grudges over small matters, for the moment if he wanted to avoid flies for the next meal, he still had to rely on the other person.

Lian Xi had been brewing for a long time and looked up at his only housemate left. He was about to speak when suddenly his phone rang.

Lian Xi picked up the phone and took a look at the Caller ID.

“…”

Can scammers imitate 110 on phone calls these days?

He picked up.

Lian Xi: “Hello?”

On the other end of the phone: “Hello, may I ask if it is Lian Xi, ID number 3205861997?…. This is the Su City’s Public Security Bureau.”

He instantly became sober. Lian Xi sat up straight: “Yes, I am. Is there something wrong?”

“Oh yes, do you have a friend named Su Jiao? He is with our criminal police unit now. He seems to have left his ID card at home and doesn’t have it on him. We found his identity information on the internet but as for some more personal questions about him, I hope you can come over and accept an interview. Also can you bring his ID card with you as well.”

Lian Xi’s eyes narrowed: “Is Su Jiao okay?”

“Heh, please come over first and cooperate with the investigation.”

After these words were spoken, the other party hung up and a beeping busy tone came from the phone’s receiver.

Lian Xi furrowed his eyebrows and raised his head to look at his only remaining housemate.

The two looked at each other.

After a while.

Lie Chen: “Who is Su Jiao?”

Lian Xi: “…”

Don’t say that, Su Jiao will really cry.

***

Su City’s Public Security Bureau, Major Crimes Unit.

Su Jiao, who was awakened from his sleep, still felt like he was in a daze. He was driven into the police car and sent to the interrogation room by the two policemen who had broken into his dormitory, each grabbing him by one arm.

The big black iron door slammed shut and the whole room trembled three times. Su Jiao’s doze was also awakened by the shock.

“What’s wrong? Where am I?”

Su Jiao, who was still wearing pajama pants, opened his eyes wide in horror and scanned the surroundings. He was not stupid, of course he knew he was arrested and at the police station.

But why!

Su Jiao was trembling with fright. At this time, the door opened and an old policeman in a police uniform walked in with his new apprentice.

The old policeman sat in front of Su Jiao and smiled: “Su Jiao, long time no see, do you remember me?”

Su Jiao looked at him blankly, without replying.

Peng!

The rookie detective beside him slammed the table and the high-wattage searchlight shone on Su Jiao’s face, tingling his scalp and squinting his eyes.

The rookie detective played the bad cop and said viciously: “Deputy Wu is talking to you, can’t you hear him?!” {I previously translated as Captain Wu, but he’s actually the Deputy. The Captain will show up later.}

Su Jiao reacted. He opened his dry mouth and slowly said, “You… I think we’ve met before at the police station?”

Deputy Wu smiled: “Yes, we met at the WuMen Police Station a month ago. At that time, you and your friend suddenly ran in in the middle of the night and said that a netizen was about to commit suicide and wanted us look for him. Do  you remember?”

Su Jiao: “Yes I remember, I remember.”

Deputy Wu: “Haha, it’s good that you remember. I brought you here today because  I have something to ask you.”

Su Jiao: “What?”

The young detective stared. He said angrily, “Be serious! There’s nothing to smile about!”

Su Jiao retracted his neck again.

Deputy Wu gave the new apprentice a wink and the latter immediately took out a document from the folder and placed it in front of Su Jiao. Su Jiao lowered his head and looked at the girl in the profile photo.

Captain Wu: “Do you recognize Sun Yan?”

Su Jiao honestly nodded his head: “I recognize her.”

Deputy Wu: “She disappeared three days ago, did you know?”

Su Jiao: “Huh?”

After a few seconds, Su Jiao reacted suddenly. His entire body felt cold like he had fallen into an ice cellar. He quickly started to deny his involvement: “No, policeman uncle, it has nothing to do with me. I am a graduate student and she is an undergraduate. We are not in class together so we are not familiar! I didn’t even know that she was missing. I only know now that you’ve told me, her disappearance doesn’t have anything to do with me.”

The rookie detective smacked the table and said, “What are you so excited about, when did we say you did it? Be honest!”

Su Jiao suddenly felt faint.

Deputy Wu stared at him directly. After a few seconds, he slowly smiled: “You said it has nothing to do with you?”

Su Jiao: “Yes!”

Deputy Wu: “Oh, so did you know that after you moved back to the dormitory building of SuZhou University, Sun Yan often made secret phone calls and went out on dates… Her housemate said that she was in love with a graduate student of Su City University. Guess who the graduate student is?”

Su Jiao was cold all over, his mouth opened but he felt like he couldn’t argue.

Deputy Wu smiled and said, “She said, that person is called Su Jiao.”
