Chapter 26

Federer took the freshly baked cookies out of the oven.

The hot cookies were placed on a pretty plate with mille-feuille, and decorated with chocolate syrup and raspberries.

“Here are chocolate cookies and mille-feuille.”

When Federer put the plate down on the table, Rosena and Illian rejoiced.

“Thank you.”

Federer scratched his back neck embarrassingly at Rosena’s expression of gratitude.

Then, Federer put down another plate when he felt the chilly gaze from the side.

“This is what I made because I wanted Your Highness to eat.”

It was pecan tart with less sugar.

There was a brief exchange of glances between Federer and Yerhan.

Ever since Federer got a job at the Prince Palace and began working hard to make dessert, Yerhan quietly came to him.

– I want my dessert not sweet.

Yerhan, who said so, was very serious, so Federer, who had a sense of duty, prepared a separate dessert only for Yerhan.

Federer bowed his head and stepped back, looking pleased at Yerhan’s expression.

“Then enjoy your meal.”

Federer looked at the royal couple happily eating dessert, and for a moment he recalled how he got a job at the Prince Palace.

Federer Grit was a commoner who ran a bakery in the corner of the capital.

When he was a child, he stepped into the dessert world and after much effort, opened a store in the capital.

Federer dreamed of a golden future. He thought everything would work out well once he got a store.

It was a day when he woke up earlier than anyone else and worked hard making desserts with all his heart.

Very special customers came to the store.

They were a man and a woman who seemed to be married, and a young child, and their gorgeous looks attracted his attention from the time they entered the store.

Federer, who always stayed in the kitchen, approached the couple unconsciously.

– Does it suit your taste?

– Yes, to the point I want to eat it every day.

Federer could not hide his joy at the woman’s compliment.

He had heard a lot of compliments, but it had always been exciting as a patissier to face such a happy face.

It was the day after the guests went.

Suddenly, the owner of the building came to the bakery. He spoke to Federer with a pale, sick face.

– You need to clear the store by the end of this month.

– What? What do you mean?

– …Anyway, clean up!

It was a bolt out of the blue.

Federer even grabbed him by the hem of his pants and begged, but the landlord never changed his words.

Federer, who lost his place overnight, was devastated.

It was a hard-earned bakery. There was still a lot of debt left to be paid.

It was during the time when he felt lost.

A male customer came to visit.

He dropped a heavy pouch in front of him and said the words.

– Do you have any intention of getting a job as a head chef?

Federer, who was about to be kicked out on the streets, ended up holding his hand.

‘So I followed him, and it turned out to be His Highness, the Prince….’

It was also the rumored third prince.

But Federer never regretted following him.

The benefits were clear, the salary was satisfactory, and he could use the finest ingredients to his heart’s content.

In addition, his mind always went haywire when he saw Rosena and Illian, who enjoyed his desserts every day and praised him.

‘I got a really good job.’

Federer laughed inside, saying he was glad the landlord kicked him out.

But there was a truth that Federer didn’t know.

“……”

Yerhan took a bite of pecan tart.

As he requested, he could hardly taste the sweetness.

Rosena also smiled as if she was satisfied with the dessert she ate now.

Looking at Rosena enjoying dessert, Yerhan thought quietly.

As expected, he was glad he did something a little bad to bring Federer in.

***

Time flew as slow as a cloud in the sky.

In the meantime, Rosena has had a hectic time.

Starting with the backyard, the Prince Palace was completely transformed.

The old and gloomy appearance as if it was abandoned disappeared and a decent building was established.

Rosena took care of the garden and backyard by herself.

She removed the thick bushes and weeds in the corner and planted new seeds.

Perhaps because the weather was nice, the seeds quickly sprouted, and even the small animals that were wandering in the imperial palace began to cross the Prince Palace.

Although Rosena had no friends after entering the imperial palace, she was not bored because the animals became her friends.

After all the reorganization of the palace, new employees began to come in one by one.

The number of employees was not large because the palace itself was small, but each person’s capabilities were excellent.

One of the most unusual employees was the bakery owner. They stopped by and ate in his shop the other day.

She didn’t know how he got a job here, but she was able to eat her favorite dessert every day.

And some time ago, boxes began to be delivered every day.

The things she bought with Yerhan the other day were just starting to arrive.

For a while, Rosena was stuck organizing the things.

After she got the house in order, she studied the current situation and flow of the empire.

Having been away from the empire for a long time, there was much to catch up on.

To fill the seven-year gap, Rosena devoted herself to studying day and night.

Meanwhile, the wedding date was approaching.

“I’m dying.”

Rosena slumped into the bed.

The dress for the wedding arrived today, so she had to try everything from dresses to minor accessories.

She thought they would have a simple wedding, but it seemed to be bigger than she thought.

Even if he was a royal just in name, it seemed inevitable because he was still part of the imperial family.

Rosena, who had been struggling all day and was taking a short break, rose to her feet at the sound of a knock on the door.

It was none other than Illian who opened the door carefully.

“Mom?”

She was so busy earlier that she left him to the nanny for a while, and he seemed to miss Rosena.

Rosena lifted the Illian up and said apologetically.

“Illian.”

As Illian lowered his eyes with a sullen look, Rosena asked.

“What’s wrong? Did something upsetting happen?”

Even with a soft tone, Illian didn’t easily open his mouth.

Rosena put Illian down on the bed and lowered herself to his eye level.

After waiting quietly for a long time, Illian opened his mouth.

“Mom, are you getting married?”

The unexpected question left Rosena speechless.

Come to think of it, she never told Illian about the marriage in detail.

She vaguely thought he didn’t know what marriage was because he was a young child.

“Can’t you… not do it?”

Rosena kept a short silence instead of answering.

She didn’t know how to say it so Illian could understand.

When Rosena said nothing, Illian began to shed tears.

When she saw Illian silently shedding tears, a corner of Rosena’s chest crumbled.

She wanted to appease him by lying, but it was just a means of escaping the situation.

Rosena looked down at Illian with a mixed face.

“Illian…”

Marriage was a method to keep being with Illian.

But Rosena wasn’t going to explain it like that.

She didn’t want Illian to blame himself.

“Mom wanted a family.”

At Rosena’s quiet voice, Illian wiped his eyes with the back of his hand.

Rosena unconsciously smiled at Illian, who began to listen quietly.

“Marriage….. will be an opportunity for people to recognize Illian as mom’s son.”

“So I’m not mom’s son now?”

“You’re the only son I love.”

“Do you love me more than you love that man?”

Illian still hasn’t called Yerhan ‘dad’.

Maybe because she acted awkwardly around him and Illian felt it.

Rosena replied, feeling a light twinge of guilt.

“Of course I love Illian the most.”

Illian mumbled and fell into Rosena’s arms.

He hadn’t finished crying properly yet, so she could still hear the sound of his harsh breathing.

Rosena was lost in thought for a moment, while patting Illian on the back.

So far, she had paved the way for Illian, but she did not know what the child really wanted.

It felt like she still had much to learn as a mother.

Rosena stroked Illian’s cheek, noting his eyes were swollen.

Before she knew it, Illian fell asleep in Rosena’s arms.

Rosena looked down at Illian, who had fallen asleep.

A child so small was now quite grown up.

He was still smaller than his peers, but he was definitely bigger than the first time she held him in her arms.

Rosena closed her eyes and recalled the past.

When Illian first called her mom, when he was about to walk, when they went on a picnic together…

Every happy moment in Rosena’s life was with Illian.

She cried and laughed a lot, but every day was overwhelming thanks to Illian.

“Mom will protect you. Forever.”

Rosena smiled and patted Illian on the head.

A few days later, finally, the wedding of the Third Prince of Herbet, Yerhan, and Rosena, the eldest daughter of Count Estarot was held.
