Chapter 176: I’ll Have You as My Nicotine

Father Shen was getting older, so these years, he has slowly been stepping down from the company. The company was basically handed over to his eldest son, Shen Kuo, but Shen You held a portion of the stocks. Supposedly the two brothers should be working together, but Shen You very rarely went to the company building, doing most of his work at home with the occasional appearance at some meetings instead.

The family dinner yesterday didn’t go so well, but this was not the first time this has happened. The old man had a temper and whoever tried to do something he didn’t want would get the brunt of the anger. Shen You was also a hard headed one so the two of them were always at an even standoff, almost to the point of disowning each other as father and son.

Shen Kuo had thought that with Shen You’s quite vengeful attitude and big temper, he probably wouldn’t show up at the company in the near future. So he did not expect that when he left the meeting room in the early afternoon that the man would be sitting perfectly fine in his office.

Shen Kuo nodded his head, thinking that his little brother has finally matured a bit, no longer going to be silent and uncommunicative for months at a time.

It was lunch time and all the employees had gone down to the restaurants on the streets to eat. This district was filled with companies so there were quite a lot of restaurants and things to do. Most of the time, Shen You preferred to be by himself, and he still had not given up on Gu Lai opening up his own restaurant, so he was just browsing for suitable properties on the computer.

His phone that was hidden under a bunch of random papers suddenly buzzed and without even paying attention to it, with his eyes still on the computer, one of his hands began to flounder around for it. When he got it, he took a look and realized that Gu Lai had sent him a short video.

It was very short, only about thirty seconds, and showed a sculpture of a phoenix standing on top of a mountain, with its tail feathers displayed in all their glory and each of the barbs of the vane carved layer by layer. It looked extremely detailed and meticulous, overly so that the lines on the sculpture looked so smooth and lifelike.1

Shen You found that there was a lot of background noise in the video and there were some other works getting caught on camera, where most of them had only carved out the head of the phoenix and were done with crooked lines and weird shapes that didn’t look much like a phoenix. They were not on the same level as the one Gu Lai had sent over, which was so lifelike, detailed, and meticulous.

He was prepared to compliment him but then his phone vibrated a few times.

Gu Lai: [ I’m off ]

Shen You raised his eyebrows at that, hmm? His class is done? That fast?

He stared at the screen, laying over the desk, and silently contemplated what Gu Lai would say next.

Would he come to pick him up?

Just as Shen You thought this, he sat back up and then slowly leaned against the chair. He stared right at his phone and quietly waited for the other’s incoming message.

After three minutes, his phone lit up again.

Gu Lai: [ Can I come find you? ]

What a dumbass.

Shen You couldn’t help but think, why would you even ask about these things, if you’re going to do it, then do it, who would even stop you otherwise! His fingers lightly twitched and he quickly sent over a location tag before picking up his jacket and walking out the door.

There was a Starbucks near the ground floor of the company building which was mostly filled with customers from the nearby offices. Shen You ordered a cold drink and sat by the windows. He would occasionally take a look at his phone and yet when Gu Lai was driving, he would never divert his attention away so there were no new messages.

He had not had a smoke for the entire morning so his cravings were raging at the moment. He started to get uncontrollably frustrated and his mind was getting more and more agitated. His throat was starting to dry up and he coughed a few times, making him only able to keep chugging down water.

Motherfucker. This was truly all his doing, why in the world would he quit smoking when he was perfectly fine.

Shen You used his hand to support his jaw as he lazily lowered his eyes and emotionlessly bit down on the straw, over and over, not aware how vicious he was acting. At the same time, he lightly knocked his phone on the table in unease, slowly increasing the speed. If anyone noticed him, they would think that the screen was on the verge of cracking.

A nearby man who was working on his computer heard the noise beside him and imperceptibly took a few glances at him. But upon seeing Shen You’s eyebrows furrow and his sharp looking eyes, not looking like a man that would be easy to deal with, he didn’t say anything, only moving to sit a bit farther away.

It was like this until Gu Lai arrived.

Through the glass window, a very familiar looking car slowly slowed to a stop by the roadside. A tall man stepped out of the car, and with his overly attractive looks causing people to do a triple take, even with himself not realizing that fact and not one to split his attention, the man had a lowered head and looked to be sending someone a message.

The sound of cicadas and the burning heat from the sun had faded away by the autumn air, but along with it, brought a type of invisible agitation. The moment Shen You saw Gu Lai, he felt that he no longer had to suffer from the agitation but also that it was just barely beginning.
He got up and pushed the door, walking out with a very clear purpose – towards the man by the car. His haste was so apparent that it brought a gust of wind. So when Gu Lai spotted Shen You, before he could even get a word in, he was pulled without warning into the back of the car.

The car door closed, shutting away the outside noise and even the light dimmed a few degrees.

Gu Lai didn’t know why, but his heart was beating a bit out of rhythm and a very unstable feeling started to spread all over his body. He caught the man that threw himself all over him like a small animal and held him in a steady embrace, somehow feeling a sense of fulfillment.

The two of them fell onto the backseat of the car, and even their breathing was closely intertwined. Shen You’s nicotine addiction had not passed and he was like a fish about to die without water. He wrapped his arms around Gu Lai’s neck and then firmly pulled forward, a bit unhappily and said with uneven breaths,

“Fuck, why have you only shown up now.”

While Gu Lai was hugging him, the top button that was unbuttoned by Shen You this morning revealed his Adam’s apple which was so eye-catching, so pale and sexy. His voice however was so serious and solemn,

“Shh, you shouldn’t curse.”

As he said so, one hand came around Shen You’s neck, pushing the other’s skinny body further into the embrace. Then he quietly added,

“I was already very fast. Today’s exercise was to sculpt out a phoenix. The teacher said to do the crown in the early afternoon and finish the tail in the late afternoon. I increased my speed so I finished everything by this afternoon.”

Upon hearing him, Shen You’s heart suddenly swelled up, as if something was going to burst out of his chest. He hooked his arms around Gu Lai’s thin waist, forcing him to stick closer to him. He pinched Gu Lai’s jaw, with eyes so wild and untameable, and quietly asked,

“Why?”

Gu Lai’s face moved to touch on the tip of his nose and said with complete seriousness,

“I wanted to get off class as soon as I could to come find you, hmm.”

Their lips were millimeters from touching.

Shen You held it in as his eyes stared right at Gu Lai, directing the conversation imperceptibly,

“Find me for what?”

Gu Lai nuzzled at him and honestly replied, “I want to hug you……”

ZZT—-

The part of his brain that held onto reason suddenly broke apart and all the power and strength in Shen You had suddenly disappeared, melting into a pile of water, and all the thorns he had in him suddenly disappeared. He stared at Gu Lai’s black eyes and then used the back of his hand to cover his eyes and silently moved his lips,

“Fuck, I’m going to die.”

Truly, really going to die.

Gu Lai’s expression changed slightly, only finding then that there was something wrong with Shen You’s breathing. His hair was also slightly damp, and he very much looked like he was in pain and suffering. He put the palm of his hand on Shen You’s forehead and quietly asked,

“Are you not feeling well? Do you have a fever? Or is it your stomach?”

Shen You was currently suffering all over, not only by the body but also in his heart, so much so that he could be by death’s door. He pulled on his tie, furrowing his eyebrows in frustration and agitation, saying pitifully,

“Quitting smoking, it’s so uncomfortable……”

The first week of quitting smoking was worse than death – his head hurts, his chest is muffled, filled with unease and depression, making Shen You who was already a short tempered man even more mad enough to want to slam and break things.

Gu Lai wondered if quitting smoking should be done more slowly. He pulled the car door open and prepared to get out, as he couldn’t really bear seeing Shen You looking pained and suffering in pain,

“I’m going to get you a pack. How about you smoke less each day?”

Shen You pulled him back and pressed down the corners of his lips, meanly saying,

“Hey, it was so hard for me to make the decision to quit.”

Gu Lai didn’t move, still hesitating.

Shen You’s throat was itching, and his voice sounded a bit hoarse. He burrowed himself in Gu Lai’s embrace, sitting face to face on top of him, and as he wished, held by the waist by the other.

But it was not enough.

Shen You caught onto the back of Gu Lai’s head, and slowly leaned closer to him, stopping only in the last few millimeters. His eyes reflected the magnified face of the other and did not hide that frightening possessiveness. Hoarsely speaking, he said,

“Come over, kiss me.”

“Kiss me and I won’t be suffering from the pain anymore.”

Gu Lai paused in surprise, his ears starting to blush. With rapidly blinking eyes, a scene that he had seen on some TV drama suddenly and uncontrollably popped up onto his mind. He hesitantly asked,

“…… Kiss where?”

Shen You reached out his hand and silently tapped his bottom lip.

Gu Lai’s breathing slowed and he lowered his eyes, leaning over a bit awkwardly, before sticking right onto Shen You’s slightly cold lips. Then he didn’t know what to do, but he felt that it was a bit nice and subconsciously kissed twice.

Both of Shen You’s legs were uncontrollably weakening and trembling. He felt that Gu Lai was like poison, making it hard for him to even breathe.

The two of them roughly fell onto the back seat, and in the midst of all the action, of whoever was leading who, some idiot in the equation finally blossomed. After a moment of confusion, he successfully activated his quick learning speed, and from the very awkward mixing of breaths to being so good that it dazed Shen You out of his mind, it was as if it all occurred in just a blink of an eye.

Lips going numb, oxygen depleting in his brain.

Shen You kissed back furiously, but then it was reciprocated with an even greater intensity and in the end his consciousness was scattered, leaving only the ability to keep breathing. Both of his eyes looked up at the ceiling of the car in a daze, thinking to himself that Gu Lai’s normal and repressed composure was all a fucking lie.

Gu Lai was also out of breath, and there was a faint teeth mark on his Adam’s apple, put there by Shen You. He lowered his eyes, staring back down at the other and his eyes immediately softened,

“Do you still feel terrible?”

Shen You lay boneless on the backseat, eyes in a stupor and his chest heaving irregularly, a look that said he had been kissed into a daze.

Gu Lai took a look at the time and realized that it was late afternoon. He scooped Shen You up and after a moment of hesitation, with nervous pinching of his ears and a voice that gradually decreased in volume, he said,

“How about you sleep over at my house today?”

Disoriented and stupefied, Shen You leaned against Gu Lai’s shoulders. When he heard Gu Lai’s question, he finally came back to his senses and his sharp eyebrows rose up before he burrowed his face into Gu Lai’s embrace, saying in a muffled voice,

“Whatever.”

And at the same time, couldn’t help but think, dumbass, why would you even need to ask about this.

The two of them silently cuddled each other for a while before splitting up to sit in the front.

When Gu Lai was driving, he was very focused, never playing with his phone nor looking around, even speaking very little. So Shen You could only play with his phone, watching that rascal Ke Jing jump around like a clown in their group chat parading his achievements, and in the end emerged in the chat to say a few words.

Ke Jing: [ Wowza, Shen You, you actually haven’t sassed me back, even liking my post today. What, took the wrong medicine today? Why are you so pacified these days. ]

Shen You scoffed, you’re the motherfucker who ate the wrong medicine.

He threw his phone aside and then slowly leaned back. His eyes imperceptibly glanced over, he was… just a bit……

Having kissed Gu Lai to the point that it seemed to have gotten to his head.

Shen You slowly played with the prayer beads on his wrist, one, two, three, and suddenly all the agitation from before was gone, leaving only the faint faint scent of sandalwood swirling around his heart, repelling all the bad feelings away.

When he reached home, Gu Lai seemed to have thought of something. He went around the back to the trunk to grab a paper bag of stuff out and Shen You gave a cursory look, asking,

“Your knives?”

Forgive him for only thinking about that.

Gu Lai said, “No, I bought you pyjamas. Yesterday’s were a bit too big.”

When his class was done, he went to browse at the local mall. There he bought a casual set of men’s pyjamas. Shen You lightly coughed and pursed his lips without saying anything. He still had that uncaring face, but if there was someone here that knew him, they would have seen right through his mask.

Shen You awkwardly said, “I’m gonna say this now, but if you buy something ugly, I won’t wear it.”

Gu Lai thought about it, “Do you like Spongebob Squarepants pyjamas?”

Shen You paused in surprise, “What?”

Gu Lai kept talking, “I thought that you’d probably not like the Spongebob ones, so I bought you a set with a casual white tee and grey pants for pyjamas. It looks pretty nice.”

“……” Fuck.

Shen You stared at Gu Lai’s serious face and narrowed his eyes, thinking that somehow it felt as if this man in front of him was playing with him but he couldn’t find the evidence.

When they were at the entrance to his apartment unit, just as Gu Lai was digging in his pockets for his keys and his side profile looked so handsome, Shen You silently stuck to his back and whispered in his ear,

“Hurry up……”

Gu Lai asked, “What’s wrong?”

Shen You lowered his eyes, “I think my nicotine addiction is coming back right now.”

Gu Lai opened the door, “You want to smoke?”

Shen You followed him in and then closed the door behind him. He threw himself into Gu Lai’s embrace and pushed him roughly back against the wall, reaching up to kiss him.

Smoke fucking what, was it not better to “have” Gu Lai?
