Chapter 175: In Your Embrace

Shen You paused in surprise as no matter what he would have guessed that Gu Lai would say, he would have never expected for this to be the reason. With anyone else, he might have thought it was an extremely fake excuse and mock the other until they would want to hide in a hole. But with Gu Lai.

Yes, Gu Lai.

Shen You pinched Gu Lai’s chin and the long, narrow corners of his eyes tilted up as he carefully examined the other,

“Are you a dumbass? Hmm?”

Not taking any of the free money left on his doorstep and forcing himself to slave over work to earn it. Why?

If Tang Yi Shan and the others were here, they would have said Shen You was the actual idiot. Only a couple hours into this newly established relationship and he’s already digging out everything he had to hand it over to Gu Lai, so what kind of pedestal was he standing on to call the other man an idiot.

At this moment, Gu Lai could suddenly, somehow, understand his previous hosts. Being a kept man was truly an extremely tempting phrase, but this temptation did not come because of the money or the power and boosted status, so what could it be?

Gu Lai thought very seriously but he couldn’t find the right answer. He looked over at Shen You and, seeing how Shen You looked a bit unhappy as he stared back at him, he pushed out his lips, lowered his head, and lightly touched the other’s forehead.

Then he reached his arms out and hugged Shen You in a tight embrace,

“Thank you for being so good to me……”

But it was impossible for him to be a kept man; never in a million years and beyond.

Shen You immediately backed down from his posturing arrogance and his face held an unreadable expression – he didn’t know whether he should be happy or angry at Gu Lai, and his fingers lightly played with the prayer beads on his wrist.

One, two, three……

He felt a peace in him that he had never had before.

His eyes were starting to get heavy and his muddled mind was starting to get caught up in a wave of fatigue. Shen You subconsciously curled up his body in Gu Lai’s embrace and fell asleep; his normally sharp looking eyes finally gentled.

In the span of a night, the cold weather had created a thick layer of frost on the windows. But paired with the thin curtains, the sunlight that came shining through became much more gentle, with their harsh light torn away, making everything feel just right.

When Shen You woke up, Gu Lai was already awake and sitting on the sofa in fitted clothes. In his hand, he held a book, with its big red cover blocking most of his face. The only visible body part were those long, clean fingers of his. Faint veins were also visible on the back of his hand as was a black watch on his wrist ticking time away.

Hmph, woke up so early.

Shen You lowered his eyes and purposefully kicked at the sheets. The slight movement finally attracted the other person’s attention and Gu Lai lifted his head up from behind the book, revealing a bright pair of soft and gentle eyes,

“Are you awake?”

Shen You finally recalled that he had cried like an idiot yesterday and only now felt a bit embarrassed. But successfully getting rid of his single status should count as an accidental joy, right? He coughed quietly a few times, and because he was hungover, he said with a voice that sounded a bit as if he was sick,

“Mhmm, just got up.”

“Go brush your teeth and wash your face. I made breakfast.”

Gu Lai put his book down and rose up, tearing open a new package for a blue toothbrush and rinsing it with hot water before handing it over to Shen You. Shen You lazily leaned against the fridge door and as he glanced over, he found a shopping bag on the desk. He raised an eyebrow as he said,

“When did you go and buy this?”

Gu Lai said, “In the morning.”

He was used to waking up early, so after making breakfast, he went downstairs to buy a new set of toiletries and a black and white checkered ceramic mug.

Up until one second ago, Shen You had thought that Gu Lai was quite an idiot, but now he doesn’t think so. The tricks up his sleeve were so good it almost made it impossible to stop the feelings. He tilted his head and narrowed his eyes, before poking Gu Lai’s muscular waist,

“Hey, you’re doing this on purpose huh……”

Gu Lai was a bit taller than him and so he lowered his eyes to look at Shen You, his pair of black eyes sparkling with questions,

“Purposefully doing what?”

Shen You didn’t answer and tried to stare through him,

“Don’t ever let me know that you treat others as well as this.”

And then walked into the bathroom, closing the door behind him.

As he brushed his teeth, Shen You scrolled through his feed, which was when he found out that that rascal Ke Jing had driven up a mountain for a bonfire party with a bunch of hot looking women. This trip also included camping in the wild and a long legged female model with a thin waist in his arms, which of all possibilities could mean nothing good.

If this was before, Shen You wouldn’t even give a fuck, but today there was the rare sight of his fingers moving as he scoffed and half heartedly liked it before uncaringly throwing his phone aside.

Breakfast was congee cooked almost to a puree and pan fried buns that still emitted steam, with its crispy outer skin still holding the hot and fresh juice from the meat filling. Even if Shen You didn’t have any appetite in the morning, just looking at the spread was enough to make him hungry.

Shen You was too lazy to sit on the sofa and sat directly on the carpet. With chopsticks in his hand, he asked,

“What time do you have to go to your training class?”

He was still wearing Gu Lai’s clothes.

Gu Lai came out of the kitchen, a plate of fried eggs in his hand. When he saw Shen You’s state, he paused and then put the plate on the coffee table. He knelt in front of Shen You and reached over towards his shoulders. With his eyes so pure black, those warm fingers of his passing by Shen You’s neck created a sudden itchy feeling.

Shen You subconsciously pursed his lips and his eyes floated away. His ears were starting to burn up and then, he felt the collar of his shirt tighten……

“The shirt is a bit too big. You’ll have to wear it properly or you’ll get a cold.”

Gu Lai properly fixed up Shen You’s clothes and then lightly smoothed down some wrinkles before sitting across the coffee table. He smiled and answered Shen You’s question just now,

“There’s no rush to go to class. I can still make it, so you can take your time to eat.”

“……”

After they finished breakfast, the two of them headed out the door. Gu Lai was wearing a casual black bag across his left shoulder with headphones in multiple shades of blue around his neck. He looked so solemn and refreshing, like a college student, which directly contrasted with Shen You whose aura appeared so much more gloomy and depressing than him. With his uncaring eyes lowered, looking so proper and sombre, in one glance he could easily be identified as a working man of society.

Fuck.

Shen You thought, what was the point of Gu Lai wearing such youthful clothes, even wearing a tiny little backpack.

He cursorily poked Gu Lai’s bag, feeling that it was quite heavy,

“What did you even put inside?”

Gu Lai said,

“Kitchen knives1. Five of them.”

Shen You: “……”

Shen You didn’t know why, but he felt a bit delighted. But then he thought that he really shouldn’t laugh and he lightly coughed. Pressing down his laughter, he asked,

“What are you bringing your knives for? Doesn’t your class provide them for you?”

Gu Lai found that the slight angle at the corners of Shen You’s mouth looked exceptionally good. Because Shen You didn’t seem to smile much, either only a mocking kind or scoffing, this kind of smile was so rarely seen. He couldn’t keep himself from shuffling closer to Shen You and said seriously,

“They do, but I feel like using my own knives would be easier for me. I’ve also included a few recipe books.”

Shen You’s fingers were tingling a bit and they twitched before lightly pinching onto Gu Lai’s chin. Just as he was about to say something, the elevator opened with a ding and unfortunately, he could only retract his hand.

There weren’t many people in the morning, with only a street cleaner on the road. A car would fly by occasionally, and with each one, it brought a gust of cold wind, causing the leaves on the side to fall from their trees.

The two of them were going to be momentarily separated again. Shen You walked out towards his car but his footsteps couldn’t help but slow and keep on slowing, hoping that Gu Lai would say something, but he also didn’t know what he hoped for the other to say.

He looked over and saw Gu Lai wearing his bag full of “weapons” walking with stable steps, and as if he was without any reluctance to part, at least as far as Shen You could see. He retracted his gaze, listlessly, and prepared to grab his car keys when he realized that his pockets were empty —

Fuck, he was drunk yesterday but that doesn’t mean that his car wouldn’t be – wouldn’t be unlocked would it?

Shen You pulled on the door but found that it was locked up tight. He calmly flipped through his pockets, one at a time, through all of them.

Gu Lai watched by the side for a while, his expression very calm. After a moment, he grabbed a set of car keys out of his pockets and passed it over,

“Are you looking for this? I picked this up for you yesterday.”

“So it was with you. I thought that I lost it.”

Shen You paused in his motions and was prepared to grab the keys off of Gu Lai when he scanned him over and found that Gu Lai was chuckling. Then he remembered how silly he must have looked trying to find his car keys and he somehow felt a bit embarrassed. His tone became bristly,

“What are you laughing about?”

“Hmm……” Gu Lai thought it over very seriously, “I just feel that you searching through your pockets was quite interesting.”

Shen You scoffed, smiling fakely, and then turned around to unlock the car, but through the bright sunlight, his ears could be seen to be a burning hot red. He pulled open the car door and was about to sit in when he suddenly paused and said quietly,

“Hey, I’m leaving now.”

“Wait a moment.”

Whatever Gu Lai was thinking then, it made him open the car’s back door and poke his head in before coming out with a bag full of empty alcohol bottles – Shen You’s achievement from last night. Shen You had originally been lazily leaning against the car door, and seeing this immediately changed his posture, looking up and down, right and left, anywhere but at Gu Lai.

Gu Lai suddenly had the urge to get a cat, a thought that came out of nowhere. He walked over to stand in front of Shen You, blocking his sight, and offhandedly said,

“How about you quit drinking too?”

Shen You was unhappy at that. His eyebrows rose up and he succinctly rejected,

“No.”

Quitting smoking would take away half of his life. Cutting away alcohol would mean he could just go die right now.

These past years, he had become more severely reliant on alcohol and cigarettes than ever imagined. Some things can only be done slowly; immediately cutting one off would be the same as just slicing off pieces of his flesh.

Gu Lai leaned down and sniffed at Shen You’s shirt collar where it still held the faint scent of alcohol. He asked with a tilt of his head,

“Then do you cry everytime you drink alcohol?”

Shen You: “……”

Fuck. Yesterday was a dark stain on his past.

Facing up to Gu Lai’s solemn eyes full of a desire for knowledge, Shen You took a deep breath and pushed him onto the car door. He grabbed Gu Lai by the shirt collar and asked impertinently,

“Who said I fucking cry everything I drink alcohol huh? I ……. I ……”

He stuttered out “I” so many times and still couldn’t finish the sentence. Just as Gu Lai wanted to say something, Shen You suddenly let him go and said gravely,

“G–Gu Lai! You best remember, I have only cried in front of you.”

His mom and dad didn’t count.

Gu Lai didn’t say anything and only reached over to Shen You’s shirt pocket to stuff a piece of candy in. It was still the same wrapping as last time, with a blue smiley face. And under Shen You’s shocked eyes, Gu Lai lightly hugged him, a quick and light touch, before letting go.

A faint autumn breeze passed through, a breeze that never seemed to go away, adding onto this feeling of unwillingness to let go. Shen You suddenly didn’t feel so out of place. Sitting in the car, he didn’t leave immediately and instead, rolled down the windows, looking out.

Seeing him like this, Gu Lai thought that Shen You had something else to do, so he moved over slightly, holding both of his hands against the top of the car. There was no unbuttoned hole on his blouse as always, covering up his neck tight. When not saying a word, he looked so proper and prim, enough to intimidate a whole group of people at once.

Shen You stared at him and suddenly reached out and undid the top button, revealing Gu Lai’s neck,

“Wear it like this from now on. It looks better.”

Gu Lai lowered his head to take a look and then nodded his head in complete seriousness. His sexy Adam’s apple occasionally peeked through as he said, “Ok.”

Satisfied, Shen You turned on the car to leave. Before he completely passed by Gu Lai, he suddenly stopped. Silence reigned for a moment before Shen You suddenly poked his head out the window and said,

“I’ll first quit smoking, then alcohol.”

And then without waiting for him to reply, he immediately pushed on the gas pedal and left, with the trees’ shadows sliding over the car.

After Shen You disappeared in a flash, Gu Lai realized then what he had been trying to say and felt himself soften on the inside. He sent a message to Shen You:

[ I want to hug you. ]

When Shen You saw the message, he took a deep breath as he thought, this phrase is so cheesy, but his heart was fluttering to no end:

[ Then I will go back to find you? ]

Gu Lai: [ Don’t look at your cellphone when you’re driving. When my class ends, I’ll go and find you. ]

Shen You’s anger was appeased by Gu Lai by now. In the group chat, Ke Jing was still disgustingly glorifying his sexual achievements yesterday and Tang Yi Shan was sarcastically commending Tang Yi Shan for having truly the “great” blessing of having multiple girls in his arms.

Ke Jing didn’t take it as an insult, and even took it as a compliment:

[ True. Can’t be like you both with your embraces all empty and cold. ]

Tang Yi Shan: [ Sorry, I already have a girlfriend. ]

He has never been single, having changed girlfriends in the past half year a few times already.

In his foolishness, Ke Jing deliberately provoked the only single in the group:

[ Then there’s only Shen You. So lonely and sad. Next time there’s a party, I’ll bring you along. ]

Shen You scoffed and threw his phone aside, thinking that of course there’s nothing in his embrace. He subconsciously pursed his lips.

He spent all day in Gu Lai’s embrace yesterday……
