Chapter 53

I have the stamina but not exactly the endurance. They are two different things after all. A single wound on me will drastically reduce my abilities, thus I cannot let even a single attack connect to me.

The cube cadets barring my way have an ominous gaze on them. I fear that they might be out of sorts, and are being influenced by some form of mind control. My mental barriers to killing have been worn out all thanks to the first Djinn I killed.

My desire for survival is stoked to the point that if it comes to it, I dare that if it really calls for it, I might be able to kill any human that desires to bring me harm.

Alas, action and talk are not the same.

Killing humans right here and now?

It doesn’t sit well with me.

So, please don’t fucking die! I bolt out to the small gap I see on the side. I kick the one nearest to me causing him to stumble to the others. I don’t know how to discern a Djinn from a human, but the sharp gnarly teeth are sure a giveaway.

I kick the wall shifting the momentum that comes from my running, thus explosively dodging the Djinn whose head suddenly enlarges, trying to take a bite out of me.

Anyhow, it is not my main objective to kill them anyway. My main objective is to escape this place with Yoenha and Rachel intact. I fear for Yoenha, but more so for Rachel. The hole in her chest is not so visible considering Yoenha’s hand to be dainty, but that is damn a lot of blood.

Half of my cadet uniform is already drenched with blood. “Rachel, don’t die on me…” I fix Rachel on my shoulder, while I let go of Yoenha as carefully as possible. I then drag Yoenha by the collar of her uniform while I run. This way, there will be less strain on my body.

Moreover, Yoenha’s body should be harder than a normal human's if I believe that there is really a Devil’s Seed in her. I easily leave the Djinn with an oversized head to dust.

The sight of a guy carrying a blonde beauty on one shoulder and dragging a brunette beauty on the other induces a sense of chaos in whoever sees it. I pass by the low-level Djinn who just gets out of the elevator only to get confused by my breezing figure.

To be honest. I am very tempted to just drag Yoenha by her foot. I feel like it will be easier for some reason, and also because if she does have the Devil’s Seed, then there is no use in caring for her whether she gets hurt in the process of being dragged.

My mind then recalls Yun Hyuk. The reason Hajin must think that Yun Hyuk has the Devil’s Seed is because of the guy’s ridiculous vitality. This is the most fearsome trait of a Devil’s Seed— their vitality.

In this world, they are virtually unkillable unless we use some god-slaying power of the sort. Is there a way to make a fake Devil’s Seed? Because if there are two, then this will be too unbalanced!

It is not like I am treating it as a game, but novels must have balancing elements to them so that they can be fair. In my own twisted reasoning, the reason Djinns are getting stronger and Devils are appearing earlier is because of Chae Nayun’s regression. Topping Kim Suho who should be the protector of the world, and Kim Hajin who should be this world's God or something, it is only justifiable that everything gets harder.

I am already on the middle floor. I am breezing the stairs as I jump off them easily. Additionally, there are only mind-controlled enemies with a few low-level Djinns to intercept my path. I applaud Hajin’s keen insight on killing every Djinn he finds on his way as it is greatly helping me now.

But it looks like I am celebrating too early.

“AAAHHHHHHH!” A demonic roar that almost shatters my eardrums echoes from the big ass door of the first floor. I only need to go past that door, and I am out of this building. I will be able to bring Rachel and Yoenha to another building where I can ask other Cube personnel for help.

But fuck.

There really just has to be an Intermediate-rank Djinn guarding the entrance. I can sense its strength to be about the level of the Djinn Yoenha and I fought in the museum.

The Djinn impeding the door has a single horn on its forehead. The only saving grace is that its left arm is busted. I imagine Hajin must have shot him with a slug of his shotgun. I take a quick glance at the bloodied pavement, and how some of the Djinn's limbs are contorted.

“Did this bastard fall from the upper floors?” I dread the thought that if it is me who falls from the terrible height then I'll end up as mush.

What should I do?

I cannot risk it.

“RAAAAAGH!” The Djinn roars at me a second time.

I decide to run for now. The Djinn chooses to remain on the door. That is what I am hoping for as I can just leave from the windows. I let go of Yoenha and Rachel. I try opening the big ass glass windows, but then again, it is wishful thinking on my part.

It is glass yet it is tough as steel. I lack in the strength department too. I guess I am about mid. I can hardly cause a scratch that will take ages for me to shatter. If only my magic power is as robust as Nayun, or as destructive as Jonghak, or as sharp as Suho.

No. If only I have C4 or something, but I have none of that.

I see a group of fumbling mind-controlled enemies. I observe a few conscious characters among them who I judge to be Djinns mixing with the crowd. Is there something I can do?

I look at Rachel who is pitifully taking in air as hard as she can, while her uneven breathes threatens to suffocate her with her own blood. And then there is Yoenha whose Devil’s Seed I suspect to be in her is in danger of being taken over by the Devil anytime.

Do I have to choose?

If I forcibly bring Rachel, while carrying Yoenha in escaping through the guarding-intermediate-rank-Djinn, then chances are Rachel will die, including me, as I really cannot function well with a burden.

So what? Do I leave Rachel? If I do, then I will free up an arm. Moreover, bringing Yoenha will not be a hassle as I don’t think the Djinns will want any harm to be done to her.

It is preposterous but what if I take Yoenha as hostage? I can see that happening, but chances are slim as Djinns are generally deranged as per the influence of the Djinn Contracts.

Do I really have to choose?

“Fuck you.” Out of anger, I toss myself to the horde of attackers. Sometimes, you just really want to lose yourself. “Die, you fucking pleb!” I flicker with an afterimage as I sneak on a Djinn. I stab it on its eye making it wail in pain. I then kick the seemingly mind-controlled human and then stab another Djinn in the heart.

I masterfully use my dodging abilities on top of my gift to weave around them until finally, I reach the fire extinguisher. I smash the fire extinguisher at the nearest Djinn rendering it wailing in pain. I then run to where I leave Yoenha and Rachel.

It is a fucking apocalypse.

Except for zombies, I have these overly eager mind-controlled humans and also minions of the Devils eagerly pouncing on me to take a pound of my flesh. While running, I then let out the white stuff from the fire extinguisher causing a smokescreen to spread around us.

This should confuse them, lose track of us, and buy me enough time.

There is still something I can do. I grab Yoenha and Rachel and place them on my shoulders. To the Detention Center, it is. I run and run and run. Hopefully, the Cube AI will be helpful for once.

***

Cube AI.

It has no particular name. It is simply that— Cube— stands for everything that its dear master has made it for. The Great Sage has been an integral part of humanity, and so will Cube. It is the Great Sage’s vision to leave the future to the youth.

Problems after all are encompassing and will never die. If the Great Sage can solve the roots of conflict, then there is no need for Cube to exist.

But the Great Sage knows better. Thus, Cube must exist.

A School Life without the detriments of Adult Life will help the world by fostering heroes with pure and sincere ideals. Cube serves as the Guardian of that sacred thought. But for some time, this fostering is slowly becoming convoluted.

Youth already tainted by the ideals not born out of their own start appearing around Cube. They seem to belong to the Adult World and have entered Cube in disguise.

In a sense, they are like Djinns, except Djinns are worse. Everyone knows that Djinns are the enemies of humanity, so it is a mystery why the Cube AI condones their existence.

It is because a loophole has started to appear in its system.

In the criminal age whence the effects of Outcall have started to die out and strong people are appearing left and right, there has never been a Djinn so young…  Someone as young as Yun Hyuk for example.

The Great Sage is not perfect. Something so simple has been left unattended. The conflict on Cube’s system on which to prioritize— repelling Djinns is lower than safeguarding the youth— it is clear that the latter is more of utter importance.

Yes. The Great Sage is not perfect. And the Great Sage knows it too. Thus, the Great Sage under the gravest emergencies decides to permit the Cube AI to issue its free will in the direst circumstance.

What is this direst circumstance? That is when the Great Sage’s inheritor is at peril.

“Aaactivating the Cube AI’s Free Will Protocol. Making independent actions outside the manual has been granted. Cordoning Sections A, B, E, L, and P.”
